Several exponents of the Castellammare del Golfo mafia transplanted in America were arrested in August 2016 as part of an operation conducted by the FBI in New York and in 4 other states. In all 46 arrests and among them the members of the Bonanno family which is considered one of the oldest mafia consortia in the United States.

Some of those arrested have significant nicknames such as Nicholas «Nicky the Wig» Vuolo, Anthony «Noy the Cripple» Cassetta, John «Tugboat» Togino and Eugene «Gallo» O'Nofrio.
