The mobsters are today still able to impose a street tax to bookies, drug dealers etc There are recent cases? I would assume anyone encroaching into the money they're making will hear from them. Eg that big Bronx/Yonkers case with Patsy Parello and them they had a gambling business down the road that was doing better than their one, I believe they were both casino type dens. In that scenario I think they attacked them (blew up a car or something) rather than sought money from them. But be it gambling, drugs or whatever I am sure if anyone not mob affiliated is encroaching into their money stream they will try and get their hands on the money or the person.. Inevitably though that person will then run to a mobster they know who can then claim them and get some proceeds for themself

Only if you are part of the world of the mafia. The mafia don’t have the power to impose a street tax to outside drug dealers from other crime groups, like street gangs, bikers etc.
Officially the mob shouldn't be dealing in drugs anyway but as we know some of them are at it. As far as I see the different ethnic groups don't seem to step on each others toes. But if a mobster was in the drug business or gambling or loansharking or whatever and an Albanian or biker or whoever started taking their customers and hurting their profit line I would assume the expectation would be to deal with it first diplomatically but violently if necessary. Some mobsters would do that and I'm sure some would stay quiet and stomach the loss of cash which would be a bad look if anyone found out lol

You had the case with the Colombos in Brooklyn when the Joey Amato crew tried to muscle in on freelance loanshark Dominick Ricigliano. To me the fact that an Italian street guy was running an independant loanshark business in the heart of Brooklyn was astonishing in itself.
John Pennisi also mentionned a situation when a small-time bookie was falsely claiming he was protected by the Lucchese Family. He was smacked by Pennisi and the Lucchese wanted to tax him but he went to the Bonannos and the two families worked something out. That situation with the Colombos was interesting. As you say astonishing him apparently not being connected. I read that one of the Colombo guys got to him and put an end to it or got some money out of him

Always was a lot of small time independents in Bensonhurst, when they either got big enough to attract attention or they were approached and then had to run to somebody for protection.
A lot of associates would play a game to whereas they didn’t want to tell “THEIR GUY” about the racket because they had to kick up right away, the strategy was to go as long as you could and then when they had some sort of beef run to their guy.
So it would go something like this they would NOT mention the racket and say hey I’m thinking or I am going to start, or look into “THE RACKET”
So if they “GUY” came back and said “WTF” they say remember I mentioned to you we were going to start whatever.
Let’s say it was loan sharking and you had 30 customers you would lie and say we have 4-5 customers were not making anything yet, it’s new we need sometime to get if off the ground.
Now today it has to be 1000 times worse you have “Guys” and “Associates” they don’t want to go near a lot of situations like that, unless they know the guy, and they feel he will not go to the feds.
Way different today. However, still does exist.
