The socialist Craxi was the big spider in the web, he gave Silvio his start in construction in Milan, godfather to Silvío's first child.

[Linked Image]

The collaborator of justice Girolamo Bruzzese during a deposition in Reggio Calabria mentioned the names of Silvio Berlusconi and Bettino Craxi claiming that he had "personally" witnessed a summit that took place in 1978-1979, shortly after the murder of Aldo Moro, "at the citrus grove of a certain Peppe Piccolo". A meeting, he added, where there were the leaders of the 'Ndrangheta of Reggio and in particular of the Piana di Gioia Tauro.

“There was a certain excitement – ??said Bruzzese -. What I could understand was the arrival of some important person. I saw two very distinct people arrive who in that place, by the way they were dressed, attracted my attention. They both had the same overcoat and the same hat, the kind of hat American gangsters wear, like Borsalino. So they were dressed up, they were dressed up. Except that the taller one was Bettino Craxi, a person I had already seen and recognized. Peppe Piromalli goes to meet him. Going to meet the lowest subject he says these words: 'Silvio Berlusconi, how are you?'. Peppe Piromalli was practically already known with Silvio Berlusconi and Craxi was also introduced to him there ".

In its 2010 ruling, the Palermo court said that it found no evidence of Marcello Dell’Utri’s mafia links after 1992, a ruling that helped Mr Berlusconi rebut longstanding allegations, made by some 40 mafia turncoats and his political rivals, that his entry into politics with Mr Dell’Utri in 1994 was abetted by Cosa Nostra.

Vittorio Mangano who worked most of his life for Berlusconi. Silvio never turned his back on him.
During the Maxi Trial in the mid-1980s the Mafia turncoats (pentiti), Tommaso Buscetta and Salvatore Contorno, said Mangano was a "uomo d'onore" (man of honour) of Cosa Nostra and a member of the Porta Nuova family that was headed by Pippo Calò. Buscetta himself was a member of this family.

Borsellino said that Mangano was the link between the Sicilian Mafia and its interests in Northern Italy. Later in 2008 Dell'Utri said Mangano was a great man who refused to say false things about Berlusconi.

This is just another example of how deeply Cosa Nostra is ingrained in Italian life. From the President of Italy, on down, through the very core of their government, there are the Mafia's tentacles thoughout. Mangano was a "man of respect" no less. Could there be any greater example of the closeness and solidarity of Italy's upper and under world?

Any scandal involving members of P2 and mafia is closeness of the two worlds , Berlusconi was member himself. Don't forger Massimo Carminati "The last king of Rome", he is very interesting character that manages to avoid long prison term for 40 years, his first arrest was due to Magliana weapons that were stored in the basement of Italy’s health ministry, he was acquited, later he got arrested with some members of P2 and secret services(even general Pietro Musumeci,P2 member, who was a general and deputy director of Italy's military intelligence agency )for 1980 Bologna massacre that killed 85 people, they were trying to plant evidence, he was acquitted at appeal in 2000. Then in 2003 he was on trial for 1979 murder of Mino Pecorelli, the editor of political weekly who was also P2 member. He got acquitted for that too. Then in 2017 he got sentenced to 20 years for 'mafia capitale' case, later that was reduced to 14 years and six months, then sentence was revoked and he is free since 2020.

Baiardo's request for arrest rejected, prosecutor of Florence: he facilitated Berlusconi and Dell'Utri

The meeting with Paolo Berlusconi
The Public Prosecutor's Office intended to arrest Baiardo, and although his appeal was rejected, they resubmitted the arrest request in the subsequent 50-page Review Appeal on June 5 last year. The motivation for this request is also based on the fact that Baiardo, according to the thesis of the prosecutors still to be verified, would have provided false and in any case vague information on the real reason for the meeting that took place on February 14, 2011 in the headquarters of 'Il Giornale' with Paolo Berlusconi. This meeting actually took place after Baiardo tried in vain to contact his brother Silvio, then Prime Minister, on the previous 3 February of the same year. For the prosecutors he would have lied "in order not to bring out the relationship between them and the Graviano brothers"

An old Greek adage, translated into Latin, reads: "De mortuis nihil nisi bonum", or "Speak well of the dead or keep silent". Here, for Silvio Berlusconi it is right to make an exception

There are at least three crucial dates in the life of Silvio Berlusconi on which we haven't dwelt enough in recent weeks: three dates forgotten by the vast majority of the media and politicians who have ventured into analyzing who he was and what he represented for Italy this great entrepreneur became the longest-serving prime minister in our history.

An old Greek adage, translated into Latin, reads: «De mortuis nihil nisi bonum», or «Speak well of the dead or keep silent». Well, for Silvio Berlusconi it is right to make an exception in the name of truth and completeness of information.

White gloves
The first date that we need to go back to is January 26, 1978. That day, in Rome, in the very central and luxurious via Condotti, on the top floor of the building that houses the Bulgari jewelry store, inside a 400 square meter apartment , Berlusconi formally joins the clandestine Masonic lodge P2, an acronym for Propaganda 2.

Only three years later, by chance, following a police search as part of an investigation into the alleged kidnapping of the banker Michele Sindona, the Italians will discover the existence of this organization. The lists of members include the names of politicians, soldiers, officials of the secret services, magistrates, journalists, entrepreneurs.

The P2 will be dissolved by law in 1982, after a special parliamentary commission of inquiry, chaired by the Christian Democrat Tina Anselmi, will have concluded that it was a criminal association with subversive purposes: an octopus with tentacles that reached more or less everywhere and which, by influencing public decision-makers, aimed to implement its "Plan for democratic rebirth". Subsequent trials in the courts, however, will end in nothing.

That January 26, 1978 Berlusconi - who at the time was a 42-year-old entrepreneur active in real estate, publishing and telecommunications, and who a year ago was nominated Cavaliere del Lavoro by the President of the Republic Giovanni Leone - receives the P2 card number 1816.

Some details of his affiliation rite were told in 2008, in an interview with L'Espresso and Pandora TV, by Licio Gelli, the great venerable master of the loggia, who was later to be definitively sentenced for various crimes, including the misdirection of the massacre at the Bologna station and the fraudulent bankruptcy of the Banco Ambrosiano: «The via Condotti headquarters – recalls Gelli – was registered to a cover name because at the time we had six ministers and the domes of the secret services, justice and the press, and we certainly couldn't report the lodge. Berlusconi was given the sword ceremony. At the time of registration, two pairs of white gloves are given: one pair remains with the neophyte as a symbol of cleanliness, the other he must give to the woman of his heart ».

In 2000, the Knight – who has never even been investigated for joining the P2 – denied this reconstruction: «I've never been a piduist», he declared to Telelombardia, «they sent me the card and I immediately sent it back to the sender : however, the courts have established that the P2 members did not commit any crime, and therefore being a piduist is not a demerit».

According to the conclusions of the parliamentary commission headed by Anselmi, some members of the lodge, including Berlusconi himself is mentioned, found «support and financing beyond any creditworthiness» from «many of the banking institutes whose heads turned out to be characters included in the P2 lists".

Which only partially helps to shed light on the mysterious origin of the capitals from which the entrepreneurial rise of the builder of Milan 2 and Milan 3 began.

What is certain is that Berlusconi in the early 1960s obtained a surety from Banca Rasini, of which his father Luigi was an important manager. The institute in question will be indicated in 1984 by Sindona as the main bank used by the mafia in Milan: among its account holders there were "godfathers" of the caliber of Totò Riina and Bernardo Provenzano.

The Knight, for his part, has always maintained that his social climbing began thanks to the liquidation of his father. When instead he was questioned by the magistrates on the matrix of some loans received by his Fininvest between 1975 and 1978 and coming from Swiss accounts, he made use of the option not to answer.

The pact of Milan
The second date not to be forgotten in the life of Silvio Berlusconi is between 16 and 29 May 1974. An unspecified day of those two weeks, in a building in Milan, a private meeting is held in which participants at least six people: the then owner of Edilnord, his collaborator Marcello Dell'Utri, the Cosa Nostra boss Stefano Bontade (head of the Santa Maria del Gesù family), the deputy mafia boss Girolamo Teresi (also of the Santa Maria del Gesù ), the "man of honour" Francesco Di Carlo (Altofonte family) and Gateano Cinà, linked to the Malaspina family.

The meeting was confirmed by several sources and was ascertained by the Court of Cassation in the sentence which in 2014 will definitively condemn Dell'Utri to seven years in prison for external competition in a mafia association.

Born in Palermo, Forza Italia parliamentarian between 1996 and 2013, Dell'Utri had met Berlusconi in the 1960s, when they were both studying law at the University of Milan, and in the early 1970s he had become his closest collaborator. But according to the Supreme Court he also acted as an intermediary between the entrepreneur and the Sicilian mafia.

In particular, the judges write, that meeting in Milan in May 1974 resulted in a "protection pact concluded by Berlusconi with Cosa Nostra thanks to the intermediation work of Dell'Utri".

Berlusconi will subsequently be investigated for these events, but his position will be archived, while for his collaborator from Palermo, as mentioned, a definitive sentence will be reached. The magistrates considered the builder's conduct criminally irrelevant because they essentially considered him as the victim of extortion.

In those years Berlusconi - who could already count on a substantial fortune - feared for his safety and that of his family. It was the season of kidnappings and Cosa Nostra, with that agreement, guaranteed him protection in exchange for "large sums of money" (about 200 million lire a year). Payments continued "throughout 1992". And the judges do not exclude that, over the years, the protection guaranteed by the mafiosi has extended to the TV antennas that Berlusconi had an interest in installing in Sicily.

A little more than a month after the infamous meeting in Milan, the entrepreneur hired Vittorio Mangano, affiliated with the Porta Nuova mafia family (which at the material time, however, had no Mafia convictions) as a collaborator in his villa in Arcore, where he remained at least until the end of 1974. According to the Cassation, Mangano's presence in Arcore "constituted the expression of the agreement concluded" with Cosa Nostra.

Bomb or no bomb
The third date to remember is the night between 26 and 27 May 1993, the night of the bomb planted by Cosa Nostra in via dei Georgofili in Florence, which killed five. Exactly two months later, on 27 July, another explosive attack by the mafia caused another five victims in Milan and in the same hours a third bomb was detonated in front of the basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, in Rome, without killing anyone.

Berlusconi and Dell'Utri have been investigated several times as alleged external instigators for the 1993 massacres, but have always been acquitted. However, after the statements made in 2020 to the magistrates by the boss Giuseppe Graviano about his alleged relations with the Cavaliere, the prosecutors of Florence have reopened the investigations.

Graviano - who was one of the directors of those massacres - reported having met Berlusconi several times between the 1980s and 1990s and also spoke of a phantom private agreement (never found) which allegedly documents a series of loans to the entrepreneur from from Sicily. The lawyers of the former prime minister, however, have always branded these statements as false and slanderous.

It should also be added that Graviano's ex factotum, Salvatore Baiardo, now a free man, told some journalists – only to later retract – that he was in possession of three photographs, dating back to 1992, which portray Berlusconi together with Graviano himself. Baiardo – whose reliability, like that of Graviano, remains to be proven – has been searched by the police in recent months, but those shots have not been found. By dying, Berlusconi left the Florentine prosecutor's register of suspects. However, the investigations into Dell'Utri continue.

Oversights
So, in summary: Berlusconi was affiliated with the P2, he gave money to Cosa Nostra for years and at the time of his death he was under investigation as the alleged external instigator of the 1993 massacres. Yet in recent weeks, in retracing the life of the Cavaliere di Arcore, the majority of commentators have not cited any of these facts, or have limited themselves to mentioning only a few and only incidentally, as if they were negligible passages in the life, so full, of a man who changed Italy and the Italians.

It is not so. Having had economic relations with the mafia, even if only indirect and criminally irrelevant, and having been part of a Masonic lodge considered by Parliament to be "subversive" - ??without forgetting the final conviction for tax fraud - is not normal for a senator of the Republic let alone a former Prime Minister who aspired to the Quirinale. It is not a question of being Berlusconi or anti-Berlusconi: simply, if these facts are not taken into account, the overall judgment on such a complex figure is crippled at the root.
