'North Dutch ports vulnerable to cocaine imports'

Municipalities along the northern Dutch coast are concerned about an increase in the import of drugs in their ports. This is evident from a report by Nieuwsuur . Mayors fear that criminals will look for alternative routes now that controls in Antwerp, Rotterdam and Vlissingen are becoming increasingly strict.

The most important ports in the north are Harlingen, Lauwersoog, Delfzijl and Eemshaven.

Vlissingen, more and more cocaine is being seized. The controls there are now tightening. Cocaine importers probably decided years ago to import more cocaine via Vlissingen (Flushing) when the controls became stricter in Rotterdam.

A spokesperson for the municipality of Het Hogeland, which includes Lauwersoog and Eemshaven, already suspects that criminal activity has increased.

VLISSINGEN - More than 380 kilos of cocaine were intercepted in the port of Vlissingen on Saturday thanks to two finds, the Public Prosecution Service reports. The drugs with a street value of 28.5 million euros were in bags attached to two buoys and in a warehouse with bananas.

Rijkswaterstaat reported the bags that were attached to two buoys in the Western Scheldt. When the bags were brought to the port and customs officers inspected them, they found 360 kilos of cocaine.

That same afternoon, a customs officer checking a warehouse with pallets of bananas came across another 20.5 kilos of cocaine. The coke was hidden in the flaps of boxes.

The drugs have now been destroyed, according to the Public Prosecution Service.

THE HAGUE - The Netherlands and Colombia will collaborate much more intensively to track down and extradite drug criminals.
