another confusing angle to this story and others of its like.

how is it that a member under indictment and quickly out on bail like zummo is not shelved immediately. were alarm bells not going off for the bonannos? zummo et al were facing up to 40 years for cocaine trafficking, made bail and back on street in 3 months and this guy is not shelved, even on the outside chance he had turned. from above gangland article it appears his coop agreement didnt get signed until december 2018.

instead of using this shelving process for petty reasons of not liking someone or some of the other odd reasons bosses have made in the past why not make it a mandatory 6 mths when on bail? perhaps this might not even work and could create same animosity and dislike for not being able to earn as it does today. but good lord try something new bonannos. the model is broken and needs a fix.

What's funny is oftentimes they get bluffed into flipping by being threatened with extremely long sentences that they more than likely wouldn't have gotten anyway. The same thing happened to Joseph Massino, when they threatened him with the death penalty for whacking another mobster. They were bluffing, I highly doubt that in this day and age in NYC he would've gotten the death penalty. Sure, Damiano Zummo might have "faced" 40 years, but I doubt he would've actually gotten 40 years. Of course it's a roll of the dice, but just going off of recent mob sentencings I just don't see it.

The long sentences in the USA are brutal though, Europeans are not used to that. Sentences here are shorter 12-20 years for drug trafficking maybe but than we are talking about tons..

That's why I say that it's a roll of the dice. Back in the Pizza Connection days I can see him getting that but then they were making examples. In this day and age who knows. It also varies from state to state. Since NYC is a blue state he might would get off easy, good luck in a state like Texas lol.

Maybe because the Bonanno boss is an idiot.

Maybe Zummo because have commit other crimes so if you first crime maybe you can get only 5 years but if you're a mobster the judges are allowed to use the heavy hand.

The mob has no more Carmine Galantes or Tony Corallos, guys who can easily take 50 to 100 year sentences without even flinching. They're just not built like that anymore. Which is why they should leave drugs alone. The drug business is meant for people who can do serious time, if it comes to that.

Tons of snitches in the drug business bro. They don't snitch a lot in Europe because compared to the USA you barely have to do any time here, but it still happens. In Mexico you get disemboweled and dismembered live on camera before they hang you from a bridge when they find out you're a rat and yet still people rat over there. Street gang members turn stoolie time and time again, there's just so many if them that every time one goes down it isn't even deemed worthy enough to make the news. Look at the big time African American and Puerto Rican crack or heroin kingpins in the 70's and 80's and just count how many of them squeaked; Frank Lucas? Nicky Barnes? Rayful Edmond? Alpo Martinez? They all snitched. And those weren't some petty ass dealers, those were guys that moved serious weight for years and knew the drug trade better than anyone.

Most people are just self-serving twats and especially in this day and age you aren't gonna find many - regardless of the criminal organization they're involved with - who can take a 50 year sentence.

I think that today is more easy to rat because you easly avoid prison and can make many money with books, podcasts etc and the 21 century mafia dont kill rats anymore!
The last rat whacked was mario riccobene in 1993 in philly so unless you had a son in the life is very hard to choose to spend 40 years aka die in prison for the family.
That is my opinion.

I've heard that Baldo wasn't devastated when his cousin Cesare Bonventre was killed. I thought they were close..

Would be great if someone with Bonanno family knowledge could tell US information about Cesar Bonventre?
