They talk about a stand up guy. Once the guy is prosecuted ,in prison, etc for his crimes, they talk about him like he's a victim.Often mentioning his many crimes of violence. Finish off saying "a real stand up guy, really great guy, nicest guy in the world, best guy you'd ever weant to meet, what a bad break, poor guy
Guy works 60 hours in a week in a factory or an office, has nothing to do with them, is the stiff, jerk or maybe the scum bag. Like everything with them is in reverse At least for a lot of them on the lower level.,especially if the working stiff won't get involved in one of their bright ideas.
Not all.Others, usually at the top recognize legal accomplishments as something good, whether success in sports,in a professional position,in business.Especially if its somebody close like the Corleones with Michael the war hero. Those types don't want kids to be involved.Rather have them doctors, lawyers, hopefully President of USA. Or take over family business(s) that are legal, even if that was not always the case.Hopefully the kids stay legal in whatever they choose. But they have been raised in that environment.
A person can work 60 hours a week and be a total creep. Who works that many hours? Time-and-a- holdf is nice. A guy can be in the Mafia and still be good in many ways, or he can be all around bad. You sound like an angry man who works 60 hours a week with no overtime and is miserable. You need Mafia members or associates to step in and unionize for you. Then, before and after they go to prison for "Extorting the business" you can say they are stand up guys as you collect your larger salary. I should have thought that.Thanks.Should have had a union job.Should have asked some of the business agents or contractors I know. BTW ,for the record, I did not say everybody in the mafia is a bad guy,and actually I suggested otherwise that most want better for their kids and even recognize accomplishments of working guys. And never said hard working or long working guys can't be creeps.. Plenty of guys worked 60 hours a week, and many had great wages and benefits because they were in the unions. And many worked 60 hours who were not in unions You ever hear any conversations that go something like what I described?

Sorry for not respsonind sooner Havana. Yes, I have heard that complaint and others. I also hear the opposite. I do think if a person works over 40 hours a week and is still broke they are living over their means or being screwed over by the company they work for. I never lifted a shovel or walked into a factory in my life.I don't know how they do it day after day, year after year.Guys I know that wwould be well off just working 40 hours. Many eworked 60 hours, and one I kno0w and a couple I know of,worked 80 hours for a long time. I could probably hasndled it physically but not mentally.Feeling like not having any freedom would bother me.

I'll make an attempt to add to the substantial corpus here.
Earlier it was discussed how the FBI used the Wrong Name. That is correct. Arguably the informants who say that the official name is Cosa Nostra are yet another example of life imitating art. I think other researchers have proven that the sequence of events was follows:
(1) Every regional family had a different euphemistic name (i.e., "the outfit", "the syndicate", "our thing") (2) The FBI wanted to name it badly, and jumped the gun, using the wrong name (3) Newspapermen were tipped by the FBI, so started to use "Cosa Nostra" (4) Low-level wiseguys across the country read news accounts, and started assuming that was the cool term.
These concepts are explained in a great new book on mob myths that just came out. "Mafia Mistaken: Why Everything You Think You Know About Italian American Organized Crime is Wrong" by John de Luca. . It will be of interest to devotees of this thread.
Some of the other stuff revealed in the book, with researched notes, are
The Mob Isn’t Really Nationwide Anymore
Some entities we thought of as “Families” Were really Glorified Crews
The “Commission” Is Largely Powerless, sort of mythological
Mobsters don't make that much money
and a pretty bold claim:
Nothing would stop any Italian American criminals from starting an organization in any American city (save NY perhaps) and calling it a mafia family. Thoughts on that claim?
