California comes to mind (San Jose, San Francisco and Los Angeles/SoCal) and then Illinois (Rockford, Chicago and Springfield).

California, Nevada, Colorado, Texas, Missouri, Milwaukee, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida, New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut had 3 or more families operating within their boarders.
As for Headquarters and Based with three families: California (Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose), Illinois (Chicago, Rockford, Springfield), Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Pittston), New York (Buffalo, Rochester, The Five Families).

New York (5 Families,DeCavalcantes,Buffalo,Rochester) Massachusetts (Patriarca,Philadelphia,Genovese,Gambino) Florida (Trafficante,5 Families,DeCavalcantes,Cleveland etc) Pennsylvania (Philadelphia,Bufalino,Pittsburgh) California (San Jose, San Francisco and Los Angeles) Illinois (Rockford, Chicago and Springfield). Nevada (Chicago,Detroit,KC,St Louis etc)
Today apart the State of New York and the Massachusettsin,in the New Jersey there are the dying DeCavalcantes in the North, the Philly mob in the South and the other 5 families in the middle. The Philly Boston crew was disbanded, right?

Some states had many, many Mafia crews operating within its borders...from a variety of different families. A great example of this would be Miami Beach, and South Florida in general. Over the years, if they didn't have at least 18-20 borgatas active down there at one time or another, they didn't have one.
But thats not the question, men.
The question is....
"How many states played host to SPECIFICALLY three (3) Families within its borders, who called those particular states their "home" and "home base" - as their "headquarters" ?
Philadelphia,Bufalino,Pittsburgh - Pennsylvania Chicago,Rockford,Springfield - Illinois Los Angeles,San Francisco,San Josè - California Nevada was with Reno and Las Vegas a base for almost all the families from 1931 to 1990s same thing with the Florida. So for me must be counted.

There were a few states who had more, and plenty of states who had less, but there were only three states known to have three Mafia Families indigenous and headquartered within its borders….
1) California - on the west coast (Los Angeles, San Jose, San Francisco)
2) Illinois - in the midwest (Chicago, Rockford, Springfield)
3) Pennsylvania - on the east coast (Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Pittston)
