'Ndrangheta, usury and control of the territory: 17 arrests in the "Gallicò" operation in Reggio Calabria. The alleged perpetrators of the Catalano murder arrested. THE NAMES
FEBRUARY 22, 2024
Staff of the State Police and the Provincial Command of the Carabinieri of Reggio Calabria, following investigations coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Reggio Calabria - District Anti-Mafia Directorate directed by the Prosecutor Giovanni Bombardieri, carried out, as part of the operation called "Gallicò ", to two orders for the application of precautionary measures against 18 people (16 in prison, 1 under house arrest and 1 obligation to report to the prosecutor's office) , suspected, for various reasons (and at the state of the proceedings in the preliminary investigation phase and subject to different evaluations in the subsequent phases) of the crimes of mafia association, murder, extortion, usury, illegal possession of weapons, fictitious registration of assets and more. In addition to the recipients of the precautionary measures, a total of 40 individuals are under investigation in the two criminal proceedings .
The first ordinance Arrests in prison CANGEMI Antonio 5-4-1988 Reggio Calabria CARTISANO Carmelo Natale 23-12-1982 Reggio Calabria CARTISANO Pasquale 17-11-1961 Reggio Calabria CORSO Mariano Domenico 18-1-1987 Reggio Calabria CORSO Gabriele 16-5-1993 Reggio Calabria CRUPI Antonino 14 -1-1983 Reggio Calabria LARUFFA Antonio 8-11-1995 Reggio Calabria MARCONESE Rocco 8-5-1984 Reggio Calabria MARTINO Lorenzo Alberto 21-02-1973 Porto Salvo UTANO Antonino 22-7-1980 Reggio Calabria
Under house arrest PENSABENE Antonio 12-27-1997 Reggio Calabria
Gallico's 'Ndrangheta, power vacuums and territorial control The investigations, conducted by the Flying Squad and the SISCO of the State Police and by the Investigative Unit of the Carabinieri under the directives of the Public Prosecutor's Office, carried out both with classic investigative techniques but also with the most modern interception tools, have allowed us to reconstruct the dynamics and structures of the 'Ndrangheta structure operating in the Gallico territory, reconstructing its use of intimidating acts to impose control over the territory and a widespread extortion system, as well as the wide availability of weapons and the hidden management of various economic enterprises. In the same way, the internal reorganization dynamics activated to fill the power gaps caused by the arrest of top management elements that occurred during the period of the activity were reconstructed, as well as the methods of subsistence for the prisoners, a topic perceived as so relevant as to be subject of correspondence between the latter and the suspects at large.
The alleged perpetrators of the Catalano murder have been arrested Precisely in relation to the criminal control of the area, significant elements would have emerged from the investigations conducted by the homicide section of the flying squad regarding the murder of Francesco Catalano, which occurred on 14 February 2019, in relation to which two people were arrested, Domenico Corso Mariano and Costel Zlatan . The crime, according to what was reconstructed by the investigations, would be part of the dynamics that characterized, between 2017 and 2020, the conflict for the criminal control of the Gallico district of Reggio Calabria, following the arrest, in July 2018, of Antonino Crupi . In particular, from the investigations conducted into the murder of Catalano it emerged that the man, already convicted of mafia-type criminal association as part of the «Olimpia» operation, attempted to take command of the territory, came into conflict with Domenico Mariano Corso who, already in 2018, had become the main mafia contact in the area. Zlatan, shortly after the murder, lost track of himself in Italy, moving to the United Kingdom, where, this morning, he was tracked down and arrested by the British authorities specially activated via the I-CAN channel of the International Police Cooperation Service.
Usurious loans during the lockdown and forced hiring The investigations connected to the Catalano murder also revealed a round of money lending at usurious rates, for which 5 subjects were reached by precautionary measures. Some of the victims, owners of commercial establishments, had turned to the suspects to cope with the financial difficulties associated with the COVID-19 pandemic and related lockdown. Among the extortions alleged against the suspects are those against the managers of a supermarket in the Gallico district, affiliated with a well-known brand, with the imposition of multiple hires before and subsequently the promotion of the wife of one of the suspects.
Still from the point of view of the conditioning of economic activities through extortion, infiltrations have emerged in the baking sector through the imposition of sourcing flour from a specific retailer or the prevention of a fruit shop from marketing bread to avoid competing with the bakery of a suspect. Furthermore, what emerged was the imposition on a construction company to entrust the laying of the iron to a company reported by a suspect.
The seizure of weapons and assets The investigations also demonstrated that the group under investigation had numerous weapons available, some of which were seized by the Carabinieri soldiers. At the same time as the personal restrictive measures, the investigating judge ordered the preventive seizure of 4 companies, all based in Reggio Calabria, fictitiously registered in the name of third parties, but in fact fully available to the suspects.

'Ndrangheta, the French case. The French Riviera and mafia infiltration
Italian organized crime dominates in France , in particular it is the ' ndrangheta which has moved its operational "headquarters" between Nice, Cannes and Menton , i.e. on the French Riviera . The map of the new business - we read in La Stampa - is entirely contained in the latest half-yearly report of the Anti-Mafia Investigation Directorate . And it lines up mafias, cities and families as if in a risk of power and luxury. Sixty-four kilometers of coastline which for at least three decades have been hospitable and distracted towards the money of Italian organized crime, expertly exported to the general transalpine indifference. Mafia historian Antonio Nicaso, university professor of organized crime in Canada, closes the circle: "The Nice-Menton-Cannes triangle - he tells La Stampa - has for decades been a territory that falls within the logic of regulatory havens ".
"The mafias, especially the 'Ndrangheta, - continues Nicaso to La Stampa - are attentive to the vulnus, to the places where the laws are less afflictive , where less resistance is encountered ". Here is the key to the choice. "For years, those arrested in France for 416 bis (mafia-type association) were not extradited to Italy because there was not and is not, in my opinion, the political will to address the issue which is expressed in its entirety ontology of rites and myths, when Calabrian clans live on relationships that they create on the spot ." Between seized restaurants , businesses and laboratories for refining cocaine , the 'ndrangheta has chosen the Côte d'Azur for decades to carry out its business. It clings to everything to expand, including new bosses, drug brokers and even freemasons , in the almost total indifference of the French the 'Ndrangheta has now built its new empire and fighting it becomes increasingly more complicated.

Lucio Aquino can leave prison with ankle bracelet Lucio Aquino was told on Monday that he can go home with an ankle monitor. De Maasmechelaar has been in prison since May last year for his extradition file in an Italian investigation into the mafia clan 'ndrangheta. He may be able to go home on Wednesday or Thursday. Phillip Pergens Source: Belga Yesterday at 10:39 PM The Antwerp Indictment Chamber (KI) gave Lucio Aquino a small birthday present on Monday. On the day of his 62nd birthday, the man from Maasmechelen was told that he would be placed under electronic surveillance. He was arrested in May 2023 and locked up in a cell during an international police operation in which dozens of raids and arrests were made across Europe in the Italian-Belgian mafia investigation Eureka. The Italians are requesting his extradition because they want to try him in a large-scale drug case. Aquino is suspected of facilitating several cocaine transports and embarking them via an Italian port. He is said to have worked closely with members of the infamous 'Ndrangheta clan, mafiosi from Calabria.
Five tons of cocaine But first the large-scale Belgian drug case Costa awaits. During the preliminary hearing on March 28 in Tongeren, Aquino will be told when he will have to answer for the suspicion of smuggling more than 5 tons of cocaine. This promises to be a monster trial, because with Bandido Geert Frisson, Dutch top gangster Bolle Jos, ex-german policeman Willy Vanmechelen and his Antwerp business partner Tom B., there are many big names among the more than fifty defendants. All together, the ringleaders and their associates traded at least 27 tons of cocaine.
Escape The fact that Aquino can continue serving his pre-trial detention at home will be a great relief for him. In June 2023, the sixty-year-old ended up in the heavily secured prison department of Bruges. The investigators had information that he had escape plans. Only there he was barely two cells away from Martino Trotta. He is the arch-enemy of the Aquino family after being sentenced to 28 years in prison for his role in the murder of Lucio's younger brother Silvio. The escape plans could not be proven and Aquino was taken from Bruges in November.

Drugs in the Gioia Tauro plain traveled on Telegram: 16 arrests February 29, 2024 in Foreground , Reggio Calabria 0 18 suspects subjected to precautionary measures. This is the result of the " Perseverant " investigation , coordinated by the Prosecutor Emanuele Crescenti and the Deputy Prosecutor Davide Lucisano of the Palmi Prosecutor's Office and conducted by the Carabinieri of the Provincial Command of Reggio Calabria, concerning a complex round of drug dealing , the result strongly rooted within the territorial context of the Municipalities of Taurianova and Rosarno.
The illicit activity was not interrupted even during the Covid pandemic, the restrictions of which were largely circumvented by the suspects who, to reduce the risk of checks, had put their cars aside and started delivering the narcotic by bicycle, directly to homes of buyers. For maintain contact with the latter, given the ban on gatherings, all communications were carried out online, with Telegram channels, or other messaging applications, dedicated precisely to matching the supply and demand of narcotics. Numerous sales were found, for a turnover that investigators estimated at more than one million euros.
On the basis of the evidence thus collected, according to the accusation hypothesis supported by the Palmi GIP who signed the precautionary order, it is believed that the suspects, thanks to supply sources on the national territory and abroad, are involved at least fifty criminal events.

'Ndrangheta in Cassano Ionio, at 41bis Leonardo “Nino” Abbruzzese: he is considered one of the leaders of the gypsy clan
The Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio accepted the request for hard prison made by the Catanzaro DDA against the man, accused of mafia association as promoter and organizer of the gang's activities
by Antonio Alizzi March 6, 2024 5.39pm
Last Saturday, the Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio signed the decree that provides for the 41 bis to Leonardo "Nino" Abbruzzese , considered one of the leaders of the " gypsies " gang of Cassano Ionio .
The man, already accused in the " Athena " trial, is accused of mafia association as promoter and organizer «as he has decision-making autonomy in the illicit strategies of the gang, in particular for the commission of crimes of an extortion nature, alter ego of the brother Nicola Abbruzzese known as " Semiasse " and the latter's replacement as the main contact person for the association".
"Nino" Abbruzzese is also responsible for fine crimes, such as alleged extortion committed against entrepreneurs from Sibaritide , as well as criminal association dedicated to drug trafficking as an alleged participant, «with the task of conveying the provisions of the boss Nicola Abbruzzese and, more generally, encourage the circulation of information between the aforementioned and some members of the association".
The decision to impose hard prison was put forward in recent months by the DDA of Catanzaro, specifically by the public prosecutor Alessandro Riello , responsible at a territorial level for the Piana di Sibari area. This is a measure that probably closes the circle. As is known, all the leaders or presumed leaders of the 'Ndrangheta of Cosenza and Cassano are found in 41 bis. Now we will move on to the procedural phases where the investigative hypotheses will have to find support in the judgments on the merits

'Ndrangheta, the 41 bis strategy against the bosses of Upper Calabria by Arcangelo Badolati
MARCH 11, 2024
The investigations, trials and "hard" prison. The Catanzaro anti-mafia prosecutor's office, led by Vincenzo Capomolla, has launched an unprecedented offensive against the 'ndrangheta gangs of northern Calabria. In addition to the raids that have led to hundreds of arrests in the last three years, there is an action of isolation of the top leaders of the clans affected by the precautionary custody orders also through the application of the special detention regime provided for by "41 bis". Just scroll through the names of suspects and defendants forced to the most severe imprisonment to understand this. The Minister of Justice, Carlo Nordio, has ordered by decree that the people from Cosenza and Rende, involved in the "Reset" maxi-operation, Michele Di Puppo, Mario "Renato" Piromallo, Francesco Patitucci, Adolfo D'Ambrosio, will be confined in high security prisons , Luigi and Marco Abbruzzese: and, with them, Andrea Tundis and Pietro Calabria belonging to an alleged clan active in the San Lucido area, hit with the "Family Affairs" investigation. To the aforementioned top members of the "confederate" cliques operating in the urban area of ??the Bruzio capital. Roberto Porcaro was recently added, sentenced to 20 years for drug trafficking, who after attempting to collaborate with justice, returned to being a "normal" prisoner. The investigating magistrates, in fact, did not consider him fully determined to follow the path of "repentance". And he, as it turns out, took a dramatic step back, making spontaneous statements in the courtroom. The alleged boss, defended by the lawyer Mario Scarpelli, is also under investigation in Salerno for corruption in judicial documents. The ax of the "41 bis" also hit the most prominent figures of Sybarite organized crime : one after the other they ended up in "hard" prison: Leonardo "Nino" Abbruzzese, 30 years old, considered a point of reference for the nomads in the neighborhood “Timpone Rosso” bunker in Cassano. The prisoner was arrested in Bari by the Carabinieri of the Provincial Operations Department in recent months after a period of hiding. Nicola Abbruzzese, 45 years old, known as "semiasse", brother of the former fugitive and top exponent of the coterie of the same name. Previously it had fallen to Luigi Abbruzzese, 35 years old, "regent" of the gang and son of Franco Abbruzzese, a life prisoner, understood as "dentuzzo" who ended up in 41 bis in recent years. Finally, Pasquale Forastefano, 39 years old, main representative of the family of the same name and involved in the "Kossa" investigation and already convicted in first instance for mafia. The ongoing investigations and trials against the Cosenza 'ndrine are followed by district prosecutors Vito Valerio, Corrado Cubellotti, Alessandro Riello and Stefania Paparazzo. Among the prisoners placed under special regime is, as mentioned, the Cosenza boss Francesco Patitucci, sentenced to life imprisonment on appeal last week for the double murder of Marcello Gigliotti and Francesco Lenti, which occurred in Rende in February 1986.

The Calabria-based 'Ndrangheta, Italy's biggest mafia due to its control of the European cocaine market, is now interested in getting into the fentanyl market, Cabinet Secretary Alfredo Mantovano said as part of his intelligence service brief Tuesday. "Fentanyl is not a traffic limited to the US.
In the EU there are signs in Portugal and GB.
Our intelligence signals an interest of 'Ndrangheta even if they are testing the market to verify the advantages of their insertion in the market," he said during the presentation at Palazzo Chigi of the 'National Plan of prevention against the improper use of fentanyl and other synthetic opiates'. Mantovano described fentanyl, which has ravaged the USA, as "the zombie drug, with as little as 1-2 milligrammes potentially being lethal". He said there had been "bad teachers" feeding the epidemic in the US, including man rappers. Health Minister Orazio Schillaci announced more controls to keep fentanyl out of Italian users hands while Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara said "we'll start off from teacher training to fight fentanyl" and Sports Minister Andrea Abodi said "fentanyl has not arrived in Italy yet but it is a looming threat to our youth". Premier Giorgia Meloni said a national plan was needed to "ward off the spread of fentanyl".
