Dutch entered South Africa in 1652, when Dutch colonists led by the VOC founded the Dutch Cape Colony at the Cape of Good Hope . Until the twentieth century, Dutch was used as the cultural language of the Afrikaners, who are largely descended from the Dutch.
The language has not completely disappeared from daily use: in South Africa and Namibia there are still some colored communities that use Dutch as part of the Calvinist oral tradition .
