People love to make fun of the Los Angeles mob saying that they only have 4 or 5 guys and that they're defunct, but they said the same thing about Buffalo and were grossly mistaken.

There less than 10 made men left so its a crew not a family. Buffalo have almost 30 made men.

Doesn't the FBI consider them both dead? I know Violi's wiretaps and all, but still Buffalo is considered finished as a family, so let alone Los Angeles

They are still some members left but the family as a whole is inactive

Suspected boss: Tommaso Gambino (b. 1973)

Remnants:
Michael Esposito (06/08/1945)
aka Porno Mike, Batman
- Esposito might be dead but I was emailed at one point last year and was told he lives in New Jersey. Doesn't seem like there is an obituary for him either, so details are murky

Russell Masetta (10/23/1952)
aka Rusty
- Peter Milano's son-in-law, lives in Cleveland and probably inactive as early as the late 1990s (after Carmen began cooperating and Nicholas A. Nardi was removed from the Teamsters etc.)

Louis Caruso (02/23/1957)
aka Little Guy
- Former captain and close associate of the Milano brothers, inactive after doing time for the late 1990s Las Vegas busts. Lives in either Buffalo or Arizona nowadays

Anthony Gambino (brother of Tommaso, probably around his age)
aka Tony
- Minimally active with the Los Angeles family, associated more with Gambino member Joseph Isgro and otherwise just a generally obscure figure

With regards to the "California Gambinos" identified by Anna Sergi and others (i.e. Albert Iavarone and Caputo brothers Paolo, Martino and Antonio), it really seems more likely that they were members with the NYC Gambino family but that's a developing situation that needs more info to be better understood

Puzzles I read your piece on Tommy Gambino, didn't want to share it. There's definitely something there Mafia-wise, even if it's not a "structured Los Angeles mob" or the old Dragna Family as we knew it. I see people on Reddit saying that they don't stand a chance because of all the countless numbers of street gangs, but the mob operates in a completely different realm or at least tries to. On a street level if they tried to flex their muscle then yes, they wouldn't stand a chance they're too outnumbered. But all criminal gangs/groups are open to partnerships when it comes to making a buck. The real issue is like others have said there's just not a big enough Italian population out west.

I think the mistake people make is assume just because some made guys are not in prison that means they are back into the criminal life. Not true. There is nothing left in LA as far as LCN. Reminds me of the Wild West when outlaws robbed trains. If a train robber went to prison in 1885 and came out in 1901, he would be lost.

I would place my bets on any free wiseguy still committing crimes. Even many who go into Witness Protection are found somewhere scheming and scamming, i.e. Sammy the Bull, Frank Gioia Jr. It's embedded in their DNA.

One exception might be is if they've already made enough money to comfortably retire and don't want the headaches. Even then, they're tempted.

I take fellow commenters' opinions on these platforms with a grain of salt. They also say that there's no more money in illegal gambling and loansharking, yet there's still recent indictments that prove otherwise. I personally don't think there's anything left of the LA Family but I'm also open to the possibility that there is.

Speaking hypothetically, apart the latino or black hoods a wiseguy can easly operate in the white neighborhoods or running white collar crimes.
L.A. never had significant italian presence but the family was active until the 1990s.
