One of the most important capos of Carlo Gambino's Family was the notorious Carmine "The Doctor" Lombardozzi.

I don't know why anyone is surprised by this, it's how many of these guys navigate the underworld, it's standard operating procedure, all part of the game.

Perhaps playing both sides of the fence was what secured his position and how he was able to continue earning and stay out of prison. As to your question, I don't really know.

There was a lot of talk amongst mob guys themselves over the years that he was, indeed, exactly that, a rat.

In fact, back in the 1960s or 70s, I think several of them were either picked up on a wire, or there conversation otherwise memorialized through informants, that they felt Lombardozzi, (and a brother of his,) were both "bad"

If he was a Rat why didint they Just take him Out like the First Alleged Bonanno Rat in the 1940s-50s William Joseph Dara they just let these 2 Guy Walk around and didint do Anything about it ? Listen I get why they didint take out Scarpa cause Soldiers including Alphonse D’ambrosio his Brother and Even Scarpas brother said to Heads of the Family that his Crew keeps getting Locked up
But he isint or when he did he just got Probation then at the time in 1980s or during the Colombo War Joe T Tomassello sent word if he is Whacking People he can’t be a Informant and then you here that Larry Mazza in jail found out they Carmine Persico and his Son Ally Boy knew he was a Informant for 20 years which tells me they they’re was a Deal where if Scarpa gets picked up that he doesn’t rat on the Persicos and they Walk or they they were too afraid to Whack him cause of all the information he already gave the Feds which tells me there was a deal between Scarpa and the Persicos cause in his Death bed Confession the Colombo War he said it was Larry Mazza and Jimmy Delmasto who did all the Hits in the Colombo War so it’s a Very Confusing Grey Area

Lombardozzi was such a huge earner, and I guess that their suspicions were not "proof Positive" of his cooperation, that Carlo Gambino wouldn't sign off on it.

He was probably kicking up so much money to Gambino, that the old man didn't wanna lose the cash cow that Lombardozzi, "The Doctor" was.

Thats the only thing I can think of.

But who really knows? These types of things was largely mysteries.

Well, I think there still remains a bit of a question as to if he 100% was bad. But all indications are that Lombardozzi cooperated through the years.

One of the keys to deciphering his cooperation was info that came out that only he was privy too at the time.

No blood on his hands, but lots of smoking guns and damning innuendos.

Exactly, even in Mexico top guys like El Chapo,El Mayo,El Mencho, talk to DEA/Mexican Military all the time about their rivals. When top players do it, its just part of business , when low level guys do it ,they get called rats.

Yes, the code of silence is bullshit. Though many have adhered to it, but you don't ever really hear about them because those types wouldn't have a podcast or do interviews. Something about someone testifying from the stand tends to make many of us sick though, I guess it's just a natural emotion.

Peter Limone for instance, did 33 years for a murder he didn't even commit. You don't think he had some stories to tell? Nobody talks about these guys it's all Sammy the Bull and John Alite.

Throughout the course of organized crime, all crime for that matter, certain guys, when they get nailed, just don't wanna go to jail....

So becoming a rat works for them. They obviously have no moral compunction about being a stool pigeon.

Not everyone had the conviction or moral fiber of a Anthony Corallo, Sonny Franzese, Carmine Persico, John Gotti, etc. to go serve decades in prison and keep their mouth shut.

Well like I said about Persico he and his Son knew Scarpa was a rat for 20 Years according to Larry Mazza why would he make up they Jail House Story he had with Ally Boy who told him me and my father knew Scarpa was a Rat for 20 years and they did nothing about it and when Scarpa confessed on his death bed during the Trial he Said Larry and Jimmy Delmesto were responsible for all the Colombo War hits which tells me there was a a Secret deal that if shit hits the fan to not mention the Persico Family and the Fact Carmine defended himself in court during the commission trail and admitted there was a Mafia he also was going to go on TV and do a Interview about the Life this is why Vic Orena Wild Bill and John Gotti said he was a Rat for doing all of That so if you look at the Facts I don’t think Persico was as a True Gangster compared to all those you just mentioned cause a Boss or a Mobster isint suppose to be doing all of that despite he did Life in Prison the others didint do what he did

To be truthful, in my opinion? I suspect that many guys either straight out felt Scarpa was bad, or strongly suspected he was bad. And that not only goes for the Persicos and the general hierarchy, but a lot of other guys who should have questioned him.

But he either sandbagged them, conned them, bought them off, or scared them into either keeping quiet or acquiescing to his activities. Maybe certain guys actually "benefitted" from his cooperation? Who knows?

I don't think he was a rat, that rumor took off a few years ago online. but he was constantly in court of jails, or under indictments.

People suspected Scarpa of being and informer, but most did not believe it because he was killing people, and they did not know (Incorrectly) that the FBI would let an informer working for the, do that, plus commit all the other crimes he was involved with. Persico had no idea. He must have heard the rumors and discounted them.
