the investigation
'Ndrangheta, Catalano murder: 35-year-old Romanian arrested
The man had left shortly after the crime and was tracked down in the United Kingdom and then extradited
Published: 12/09/2024 – 10:52

REGGIO CALABRIA The agents of the Reggio Calabria Flying Squad, in collaboration with the operators of the Service for International Police Cooperation of the Central Directorate of Criminal Police and the Border Police of Rome "Fiumicino" airport, have arrested a 35-year-old Romanian, reached by a precautionary custody order issued by the investigating judge of the Court of Reggio Calabria, in relation to the murder of Francesco Catalano, which occurred in February 2019. The suspect, at the stage of the proceedings still in the preliminary investigation phase and without prejudice to the principle of not guilty until a final sentence, is called to answer for murder in competition, with the aggravating circumstance of premeditation and mafia method, and for illegal possession and carrying of a firearm.

The Catalano Murder and the “Gallicò” Blitz
Those responsible for the killing had left Catalano no escape: the man, in fact, had been hit by at least seven gunshots, fired at close range , while he was near his home, in the Reggio Calabria neighborhood of Arghillà. The investigations, launched by the Flying Squad and coordinated by the Reggio District Anti-Mafia Directorate, immediately allowed the serious crime to be placed in the broader context of organized crime in the city. And in fact, the precautionary measure carried out last September 9th is part of Operation “Gallicò” , conducted last February by the Flying Squad, SISCO and the Carabinieri of Reggio Calabria, which involved 18 individuals , investigated in various capacities for the crimes of mafia association, murder, extortion, usury, possession of weapons and fraudulent transfer of assets.
The 35-year-old had left Reggio Calabria a few months after the crime and was tracked down and arrested, for extradition purposes, on February 22 in the United Kingdom, following specific activity carried out by the Flying Squad and, for international profiles, by the International Police Cooperation Service, with the constant coordination of the Reggio Calabria DDA. Once back in Italy, the man was taken to prison at the disposal of the Judicial Authority. ( redazione@corrierecal.it )

don't call it an emergency
The 'Ndrangheta, the "stalemate" and "the great paradox"
As Attorney Paci emphasizes: "Our country doesn't want to hear about the mafia because it's something that bothers people."
Published: 09/15/2024 – 7:00

REGGIO EMILIA «The first high-profile mafia murder occurred in Turin, not in Palermo or Reggio Calabria». The speaker is Gaetano Calogero Paci, head of the Reggio Emilia prosecutor's office and former deputy prosecutor of Reggio Calabria. The occasion to discuss the mafia is the Festa dell'Unità of the Democratic Party that dedicates a panel to "Mafia and anti-mafia: What social policies, prevention and judicial tools to combat it". « The mafia in our country is not an emergency », begins the prosecutor who adds: «as the national anti-mafia prosecutor Gianni Melillo recently said, it is a structural element of our system ».

The 'Ndrangheta in “Aemilia”
The investigation codenamed Aemilia and the subsequent trial represent for the prosecutor the certification " of the transition and transformation of the 'ndrangheta from a military entity to an entity that is interested in legal economic activities in the territory ". The statements made by the prosecutor , during a recent hearing in the Parliamentary Anti-Mafia Commission, also report the example of a wiretap considered significant in describing the process of transformation of Calabrian organised crime. The interception is illuminating, the words spoken are attributed to a member of the Bellocco clan who, after serving his sentence, does not return to Calabria but goes to Granarolo and tells his children "you go down to Calabria and take care of the rubbish, you instead have to stay here and be an entrepreneur".

The contrast systems
The mafias, therefore, are in all respects a systemic problem and to combat them " we need a comprehensive strategy, which leverages judicial repression, but which also takes into account the aspects of prevention : particularly important to the extent that they try to create barriers to the possibility that mafia activities contaminate, influence and dominate various sectors". It is obviously necessary to develop antibodies capable of keeping the appetites of the underworld at bay. " We also need to create barriers so that in the new generations the system of values ??leads to repudiating the mafia as a way of life ". According to Paci, at the moment " we find ourselves in a stalemate , we only see people talking about the mafia on the occasion of commemorations, when it comes to remembering members of the institutions, journalists, priests or ordinary citizens who died at the hands of the mafia".

The great paradox
The prosecutor's speech continues, and Pace outlines the contours of what he defines as a great paradox. " Our country does not want to hear about the mafia because it is something that bothers us . When we talk or should talk seriously about the mafia, then we should question, for example, the legitimacy of an economic system, I am speaking on a global level, that has accepted the mafia." Paci continues: "Talking about the mafia in these sectors becomes complicated. Indeed, you even risk being seen as Martians, as happened to me in this province (Reggio Emilia, ed. ). The prosecutor argues for the need to make a choice. "We have been fighting this phenomenon for a very long time now. For better or for worse, thanks to the judiciary, we have prevented our democracy from becoming the expression of an oppressive, violent power, such as that of the mafia, which made no secret of resorting to bombs and massacres in order to assert itself as an interlocutor of the overall system." The mistake, Paci concludes, is "to think that the mafia is an emergency, when in reality in its daily evolution it has largely influenced many sectors". (f.benincasa@corrierecal.it)

'Ndrangheta, there is a new informer in the Tegano clan: he reveals the plan to kill the boss

The news emerged in the bunker courtroom during the "Garden" trial where the Prosecutor's Office filed the first interrogation reports of the new collaborator who speaks of a plan to attack Cosimo Borghetto

A new 'ndrangheta informer is shaking up the criminal dynamics of Reggio Calabria. He is Davide Bilardi, 49 years old, considered close to the powerful Tegano clan and arrested in October 2023 during the anti-mafia operation called "Atto Quarto".

The investigation, coordinated by the Reggio Calabria District Anti-Mafia Directorate (DDA), brought to light important connections between various mafia families and Bilardi's role within the organization.

His collaboration was made public during the "Garden" trial in the bunker courtroom of Reggio Calabria, - as reported by Ansa - where the Prosecutor's Office filed the first interrogation reports of the new collaborator. These documents contain details of a plot to attempt the life of Cosimo Borghetto, a prominent boss in the Reggio Calabria organized crime.

From Schimizzi's loyalist to justice collaborator
In the past, Bilardi was one of the most trusted men of Paolo Schimizzi, nephew of Giovanni Tegano, one of the historic bosses of the Reggio Calabria 'ndrangheta, who mysteriously disappeared about fifteen years ago in an episode attributable to a lupara bianca. According to investigations, Bilardi held strategic roles: he acted as an intermediary for the transmission of messages between the various branches of the 'ndrangheta and oversaw the management of extortion proceeds, in addition to dealing with business interests on behalf of the organization.

A key aspect of his activities was his role as a liaison between the Archi mafia families and the Libri clan, one of the most powerful in the city of Reggio Calabria. This function as a mediator allowed him to manage delicate internal issues and foster cooperation between criminal groups that often clash with each other over the management of power and illicit proceeds.

The Planned Attack on Borghetto
During his interrogations with the DDA magistrates, Bilardi revealed burning details regarding the internal tensions of the Libri clan and, in particular, the relationship with its regents, Totò Libri and Edoardo Mangiola. Both, as shown by the trial documents, harbored a strong resentment towards Cosimo Borghetto.

Borghetto, once released from prison, had publicly declared that he no longer recognized the authority of Filippo Chirico as the head of the Libri clan, claiming for himself the role of head of the entire organization, not only of the Borghetto-Zindato substructure. This attitude provoked the ire of Mangiola, strongly linked to Chirico, and together with Totò Libri they decided to eliminate Borghetto.

The boss Cosimo Borghetto "once released from prison, declared that he did not recognize - as stated in the reports - Filippo Chirico's top role and claimed the role of head of the entire Libri gang and no longer just the Borghetto-Zindato gang. Edoardo Mangiola, who was very close to Filippo Chirico, was so angry that together with Totò Libri they had planned to kill Cosimo Borghetto. On two occasions they attempted to kill him, one in the Saracinello area and the other near a butcher's shop near the headquarters of the Regional Council".

Bilardi said that at least two attacks were planned against Borghetto, both of which failed. The first attempt took place in the Saracinello area, while the second was organized near a butcher's shop near the headquarters of the Regional Council of Calabria, a sign of the unscrupulousness with which the 'ndrangheta operates even in central and institutionally sensitive areas of the city.

Davide Bilardi's decision to collaborate with justice could open up new investigative and legal scenarios, as his knowledge of the internal dynamics of the Tegano clan and other mafia families in Reggio Calabria could prove crucial to further dismantling the power of the 'ndrangheta.

Bilardi's statements, already filed in the "Atto Quarto" trial, indicate that the internal war for control of the Libri clan was much deeper and more intricate than previously thought. His revelations may shed light on other dark plots and other protagonists of the mafia wars who, while moving in the shadows, are responsible for years of violence and terror in Reggio Calabria.

The collaboration of a man so close to the top of the 'ndrangheta as Bilardi marks an important coup in the fight against the mafia, opening new spaces to weaken the power structures of organized crime and reaffirm the control of the State over the territory.

The 'ndrangheta turncoats
It is not easy for those who join the 'ndrangheta, repent and then "betray". 'Ndrangheta repentants are, in fact, a relatively rare phenomenon compared to other mafia organizations, such as Cosa Nostra. This can be attributed to a series of factors deeply rooted in the culture, structure and internal dynamics of the 'ndrangheta itself. The 'ndrangheta is unique among Italian mafia organizations for its structure strongly based on family ties.

The clans are often organized as real dynasties, where the members are linked by blood ties. This makes it more difficult for an affiliate to decide to collaborate with justice, because betraying the 'ndrangheta often means betraying one's family. Furthermore, the consequences do not fall only on the repentant, but on his entire family circle, which can be subject to revenge.

Twenty will undergo the ordinary trial held before the Castrovillari court. The Abbruzzese clan is accused
Published: 09/17/2024 – 16:29

COSENZA The trial phase of the ordinary trial before the Court of Castrovillari related to the investigation called “ Athena ” has opened: coordinated by the DDA of Catanzaro. In the courtroom, the prosecution is represented by the prosecutor of the District Anti-Mafia Alessandro Riello . After the preliminary requests of the parties, the court adjourned to the next hearing, scheduled for October, when the expert in charge of transcribing the wiretaps included in the trial will be appointed.

Capillary control
Not a common criminal group but a real organization capable of baptizing children in the name of Osso Mastrosso and Carcagnosso, the three legendary knights who founded all mafias. The Abbruzzese of Cassano allo Jonio , hit by the joint operation of the police and the Carabinieri, are accused by the Catanzaro DDA of mafia-style association, association dedicated to drug trafficking, extortion, threats. A group – according to the prosecution – present in a “ capillary ” manner on the territory. The deputy prosecutor of the Catanzaro prosecutor's office Vincenzo Capomolla had emphasized – in a press conference – the ability of the Abbruzzese group to get their hands on entrepreneurial activities thanks to the alleged subservience of some entrepreneurs.

Acquittals and defendants in the ordinary trial
There are two acquittals and they concern the entrepreneur Mario Varca and Carmine Saggese. Twenty, instead, the defendants who will undergo the trial celebrated with the ordinary rite, these are Celestino Abbruzzese alias “Ciccio u zingaro”; Rosaria Abbruzzese, Gennaro Benedetto, Katia Cairo, Alessia Cerchiara, Domenico Falbo, Giuseppe Falbo, Emilio Ferrara, Tiziana Antonietta Giannicola, Marco Guidi, Luca Laino, Antonio Lo Tufo, Francesco Lo Nigro, Massimiliano Martucci, Lucia Mastrota, Rocco Milito, Giuseppe Mitidieri, Vincenzo Rovitti, Giancarlo Quintino Pio Russo, Mario Russo .
There are 58 defendants who have opted for the alternative rite: among these are Luigi Abbruzzese , considered the head of the Abbruzzese clan, Nicola Abbruzzese known as “Semiasse” and Leonardo “Nino” Abbruzzese. (fb)

'Ndrangheta, new informer reveals plan to kill boss
In Reggio Calabria Davide Bilardi of the Tegano gang repents
(ANSA) - REGGIO CALABRIA, SEPTEMBER 16 - There is a new 'ndrangheta informer in Reggio Calabria. It is Davide Bilardi, 49 years old, believed to be close to the Tegano gang and arrested for mafia association in October 2023 as part of the "Atto quarto" investigation, coordinated by the Reggio Calabria District Anti-Mafia Directorate.
The news emerged today in the bunker courtroom during the "Garden" trial where the Prosecutor's Office filed the first interrogation reports of the new collaborator who speaks of a plan to attack the boss Cosimo Borghetto.
Once among the most loyal followers of the boss Paolo Schimizzi, the nephew of Giovanni Tegano who disappeared about fifteen years ago for lupara bianca, Bilardi "played - according to the magistrates - roles of communicator of messages in the relationships with the other articulations of 'ndrangheta, also in function of the collection of extortion proceeds, and was in charge of the management of business interests". In particular, in the investigation documents Davide Bilardi is defined as "the man of connection between the mafia families of Archi and the Libri clan".
With the prosecutors of the DDA, Bilardi spoke about his relationship with the leaders of the Cannavò gang Totò Libri and Edoardo Mangiola, also defendants in the "Atto quarto" trial.
Both had clashed with the boss Cosimo Borghetto. The latter, "once released from prison, declared that he did not recognize - as stated in the reports - Filippo Chirico's top role and claimed the role of head of the entire Libri gang and no longer just the Borghetto-Zindato gang.
Edoardo Mangiola, who was very close to Filippo Chirico, was so upset that together with Totò Libri they had planned to kill Cosimo Borghetto. On two occasions they attempted to kill him, one in the Saracinello area and the other near a butcher's shop near the headquarters of the Regional Council". (ANSA).

'Ndrangheta, “Melo” Santaiti dies. He was detained under 41bis
The '54 class died in the penitentiary department of the "San Paolo" in Milan. He had been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Carmelo Ditto
Published: 09/19/2024 – 14:28

The 'ndrangheta boss Carmine Demetrio Santaiti (born in 1954) , a prisoner under the 41bis regime and a long-time cancer patient, died in the penitentiary ward of the "San Paolo" hospital in Milan .
Santaiti, known as "Melo", was convicted at the end of the "Cosa Mia" trial with the ruling of the Supreme Court that, in 2017, put an end to the maxi trial against the Gallico clan of Palmi and that of the Bruzzise of Barritteri of Seminara. 'ndrangheta families involved in a feud that, between 1980 and 1988, led to the murder of 52 people.
According to the investigation, in particular, the '54-born man was considered the instigator and executor of the murder of Carmelo Ditto, killed in Seminara on September 20, 2006.
Furthermore, the '54-born man had been arrested in 2005 by the investigative unit of the Carabinieri of Imperia and by the Diano Marina station, because, as a fugitive, he was hiding in Diano Castello. At the time of his arrest, the man was with his cousin Antonio De Marte of Diano Marina, who was also arrested for aiding and abetting a fugitive. (g.curcio@corrierecal.it)

“replacement” process
'Ndrangheta and the rise of Rosario Fiorillo, "the bloodiest of the Piscopisani"
Extortion, shooting and Moscato's alleged hatred. The reasons for the abbreviated sentence against Piscopio's 'ndrina have been made public
Published: 20/09/2024 – 7:12

VIBO VALENTIA «The bloodthirsty of the Piscopisans , attracted by the sight of blood, always ready for violent and brutal actions». The judges of the Court of Appeal of Catanzaro repeat the words of the collaborator of justice Bartolomeo Arena to confirm the conviction for mafia association inflicted in the first degree on Rosario Fiorillo . In the abbreviated Replacement trial, the trial against the Piscopio 'ndrina, the judging panel presided over by President Loredana De Franco, slightly remodulated the sentence, but in fact confirmed the sentence of 19 years and 1 month , compared to the 19 years and 4 months of the first-instance sentence dating back to 2021. For the judges, as can be read in the reasons filed in recent days, the sentence of the Court of Vibo Valentia holds up, which identifies Fiorillo as the " promoter and creator " of the Piscopisani gang, the clan that had attempted to "replace" the Mancuso clan in the Vibo Valentia area.

The figure of Rosario Fiorillo
With the sentence of January 25, 2023, the judges confirmed the convictions for 10 defendants , overturning instead that of Michele Fiorillo alias “Zarrillo” , acquitted in the first instance and sentenced on appeal to 12 years. The sentence was adjusted, but by only 3 months, for Rosario Fiorillo, acquitted on two counts. Accused in Replacement on various counts of mafia association, extortion, usury, Fiorillo already has a definitive sentence of 30 years in prison for the murder of Fortunato Patania in 2011. Investigators consider him to be at the top of the Piscopisani clan, based on the statements of collaborators of justice, including Bartolomeo Arena and Raffaele Moscato, another member of the clan originally from the hamlet on the outskirts of Vibo. The appeal of the defense lawyers focused precisely on the latter.

For the defenders, Moscato's "hatred" towards Fiorillo was due to a debt
Moscato had referred to Fiorillo as the one who, as a "promoter of the gang", would have " contributed to the planning and planning of murders ", as well as to the management of extortion , damage and robberies . For the defense, these are statements due to the collaborator's resentment for a debt to him that the defendant never paid. The appeal was rejected by the judges, who emphasized that the loan " is not proven in any way " and therefore does not undermine Moscato's credibility. The sentence also confirmed the mafia aggravation, since the crimes were committed "in the interests of the "Piscopisani" gang" as well as with mafia methods.

Extortion and the shooting of the entrepreneur
Among the charges for which the lawyers' recollection was rejected was also the extortion request to the detriment of the Cooperativa Costruzioni Calabrese, an episode for which the defense had emphasized Fiorillo's absence from Calabria during that period. For the judges, however, the distance from the Calabrian territory " is completely irrelevant since Fiorillo is not accused of being the material executor of the act of intimidation, but rather of being the creator and promoter, together with Battaglia Rosario, of the extortion". The same outcome for the shooting of a businessman from the Vibo Valentia area , an episode for which Moscato accuses Fiorillo of being the instigator. The judges emphasize how the same collaborator of justice is "the material executor of the facts" and, therefore, more reliable than Andrea Mantella who had not indicated Fiorillo among the executors or the instigators. The defense's theses regarding two drug dealing episodes were accepted. According to investigators, the drugs found on two subjects could be traced back to Fiorillo. The accusation was contested by the defense and the judges of the Court of Appeal, who recognized that "there is no proof" that the doses were given to the subjects by the defendant. An acquittal on the two charges that led to a "discount" of three months on the total sentence, sentencing Fiorillo to 19 years and 1 month in prison. ( Ma.Ru.

https://www.ansa.it/calabria/notizi...48be863-7529-42b7-bf29-23a4673ecc86.html

A bottle of gasoline was left, as an intimidating message, at the entrance of a business in the Spirito Santo area of ??Reggio Calabria, owned by the brother-in-law of a new collaborator of justice, Davide Bilardi, 49 years old.
The owner of the rotisserie, Tommaso Marzullo, 42 years old, found it.

The venue should open in the next few days in the building next to the one where the offices of the judicial police sections of Reggio Calabria are located.

The patrol and scientific police officers intervened on the spot and are carrying out the surveys on the bottle that was seized.
The flying squad is investigating the matter and has alerted the District Anti-Mafia Directorate of Reggio Calabria. The intimidation, in fact, has not gone unnoticed in the investigating and investigative circles of the city because the area where the act took place is the "competence" of the Libri gang that in these days is in fibrillation due to the statements of Bilardi, 49 years old.
In some drafts of the "Atto Quarto" investigation, reference is made to this place that was supposed to be opened by Davide Bilardi. A rotisserie that is cited by the collaborator of justice already in the first reports given to the prosecutors of the District Anti-Mafia Directorate. In one of these, filed by deputy prosecutor Sara Amerio in the "Atto Quarto" trial, Bilardi talks about this rotisserie and names Claudio Bianchetti, a member of the Libri gang who, one day, showed up at the shop complaining that the commercial activity would be opened in the area of ??competence of the 'ndrangheta family "without warning him... I told him that there had evidently been an information short circuit within the gang: I told him that I myself had warned both Totò Libri and Edoardo Mangiola who had given their go-ahead".
The investigators are now trying to understand whether this could be a retaliation or a message from the Libri gang addressed to the collaborator Davide Bilardi.

Operation “Malea”: 117 years of prison requested for seven defendants in the Mammola 'ndrangheta trial

117 years of prison requested for seven defendants in the “Malea” trial on the 'ndrangheta of Mammola, accused of extortion and drug trafficking
Public Prosecutor Giovanni Calamita, of the Reggio Calabria District Anti-Mafia Directorate, has requested sentences totaling 117 years and 8 months of imprisonment for seven defendants in the trial arising from Operation “Malea,” who have opted for a summary trial. The sentencing requests concern Damiano Abbate (20 years), Salvatore Nicodemo Abbate (16 years and 8 months), Isidoro Callà (20 years), Ferdinando Cimino (15 years), Fabrizio D'Alessandra (8 years), Nicodemo Deciso (18 years), and Rodolfo Scali (20 years).

During the closing speech, the prosecutor reconstructed the results of the investigation “Malea” – from the ancient name of Mammola – conducted by the Flying Squad, which thanks to numerous wiretaps documented the existence of the alleged leaders and members of the “Mammola 'ndrangheta local”. The organization was allegedly able to control the territory through extortion activities, influencing entrepreneurship, especially in the forestry sector, and also financing itself through the production and trafficking of narcotics.

The prosecutor also requested the acquittal of Raffaele Romeo, defended by the lawyer Lorenzo Gatto. Calamita, who will soon leave the Reggio Calabria DDA to move to the Bari Prosecutor's Office, stressed the importance of the evidence collected during the investigation.

Football and the Mafia: Inter and Milan ultras between organised crime, murders and illicit business
AMDuemila September 23, 2024
Behind the passion for cheering, the hidden connections between fan bases, the far right and golden business linked to ticket scalping
From assaults to murders, behind the Inter and Milan ultras fans hide criminal interests that have little or nothing to do with a passion for football. Some of the recent episodes involving the most extreme fringes of the two fan bases have revealed close and well-hidden ties, which demonstrate how organized fandom is deeply intertwined with crime. The first episode of violence dates back to April, when a personal trainer, Cristian Iovino , was attacked by a group of Rossoneri ultras. The episode received wide media coverage also due to the presence of the famous singer Fedez. Another episode, even more shocking, is the murder of Antonio Bellocco , heir to a family linked to the 'Ndrangheta, which occurred two weeks ago in Cernusco sul Naviglio. Bellocco was killed by Andrea Beretta , former Inter ultras leader, with whom he had close relations within the Curva Nord. An unprecedented crime, which directly involves a figure linked to Calabrian crime. Beretta told investigators that the murder was an act of self-defense, as he feared being killed by the Bellocco family. However, investigators do not rule out that there are more complex motives behind it, perhaps linked to illicit business, such as the sale of match tickets at the San Siro stadium or the control of merchandising. Illicit business, crime and football have deep roots, both inside and outside the stadium. Bellocco's murder has in fact brought to mind another crime that occurred in 2022: that of Vittorio Boiocchi , historic leader of Inter's Curva Nord. A murder had a significant impact on the management of the ultras group, bringing Marco Ferdico , a figure close to both far-right groups and the Calabrian mafia, to its leadership. On the front of AC Milan fans, especially the most extreme ones, the situation does not seem better. Luca Lucci , former leader of AC Milan's Curva Sud, is under house arrest for drug trafficking. In addition to a decent collection of Daspos, Lucci can boast a past marked by convictions and ties to organized crime. In short, it seems that the world of football is surrounded by lucrative and very dangerous businesses. The terraces of the stadiums increasingly resemble control centers for illegal activities such as the illegal sale of tickets - the so-called scalping - merchandising and even drug dealing. All this takes place within a submerged world, where ultras and organized crime meet and do business.

'Ndrangheta in Turin, Operation “Factotum”: 6 People Arrested
Among the people involved in the DDA blitz was also Franco D'Onofrio from Mileto, already known for the “Minotaur” operation
Published: 24/09/2024 – 10:36

TURIN Anti-ndrangheta blitz in Turin where the military of the Provincial Command of the Guardia di Finanza, with the support of the Central Service for the Investigation of Organized Crime of Rome, under the coordination and by order of the District Anti-Mafia Directorate of Turin, have executed, in the Piedmont capital and province, an arrest warrant for 6 individuals seriously suspected of committing crimes of mafia-type association, receiving stolen goods, extortion aggravated by mafia methods as well as illegal possession of weapons.

The investigation
The investigations were carried out by the Turin Economic and Financial Police Unit, with the use of complex and detailed judicial police investigations, also carried out through telephone and environmental interceptions and wide-ranging observation and shadowing activities. The investigations were initiated within the framework of the findings of previous investigative activities - in particular the "Carminius" and "Fenice" operations - which, during 2019, made it possible to dismantle a 'ndrangheta articulation of Vibo Valentia origin active in the province of Turin. The investigations highlighted the importance of the role played, for the purposes of the association's operations, by a member elected to the local secretariat of a trade union in the construction sector, a sector of specific interest to the consortium.

Franco D'Onofrio Minotaur Turin
Known names
A central figure in the criminal dynamics of the investigated association was a subject, Francesco D'Onofrio (born in 1955) from Mileto, also affected by the arrest warrant, already implicated in the well-known “Minotauro” trial – concerning the establishment and operation in Turin and in various Piedmontese municipalities of numerous 'ndrangheta formations, all connected to each other and constituting a real associative network – who – according to the accusation – is the director and organiser of the 'ndrangheta network of Piedmont (still operational today) – and in this capacity to have promoted, favoured and participated in meetings between members of various Calabrian and Piedmontese branches (for agreements, alliances, divisions of the territory, requests for mediation or debt collection interventions, regulations of relationships between members and branches, authorisations to commit crimes) – and a reference for members of common organised crime who intended to obtain approval for their criminal activity. He appears to have exercised his role also by supervising the activities of the Carmagnola association's participants in the construction sector, and then having ensured financial support for the legal expenses of the members and their families.

Projections on Carmagnola
The investigations also revealed that the organization in question, thanks to the work of two additional recipients of the arrest, provided protection to entrepreneurs in the Carmagnola area during disputes with other economic operators. This protection service was remunerated with sums of money collected and subsequently allocated to the associates. Emblematic, for the purposes of describing the modus operandi of the subjects involved in the investigations, is the figure of a further associate, affiliated with the 'ndrangheta since 2003 (for this reason already judged), who not only favored the exchange of communications relating to the activity of the criminal group, organizing meetings with other members, but also agreed with other associates, cited as witnesses in hearings for a trial concerning 'ndrangheta-related crimes, terms and methods for giving false testimony, in order to discredit a collaborator of justice. In a specific case, this individual, with a threat consisting in asserting his membership in the organization, forced an extorted individual to hand over valuables (gold bracelets and the like), for a total value of approximately 20 thousand euros. The recipient of the arrest is also a person currently detained in prison for having been definitively judged for having recently been part of the Piedmontese 'ndrangheta. This individual, in addition to participating in meetings between members of the Piedmontese 'ndrangheta organization and being a protagonist in extortion cases, worked to provide financial support and logistical assistance to the fugitive Pasquale Bonavota, believed to be a leading member of the Vibo Valentia clan of the same name.
