UN Security Council members frustrated by lack of progress on ceasefire
Al Jazeera Kristen Saloomey reporting from the United Nations in New York 05 September 2024

Extracts:
This was the second emergency meeting of the UN Security Council in less than a week on the situation in Gaza

Israel wanted to talk about the six captives who were discovered dead in Gaza over the weekend

Algeria wanted to talk about violations of international human rights law in the West Bank

But the overarching sentiment from members of the UN Security Council was frustration
Frustration that the ceasefire they endorsed in resolution 2735 three months ago has yet to be accepted by Israel

A ceasefire that called for the release of the captives as well as the withdrawal of Israeli forces from all of Gaza

The United States said diplomacy takes time

Other council members, like Guyana and Slovenia, said more needs to be done to bring this conflict to an end and threatened to take further action if progress isn’t seen

The UN Security Council (UNSC) convened after the Israeli military recovered the bodies of six captives from Gaza

Palestine’s UN envoy urged an end to Israel’s apartheid, unlawful killings and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians while the Israeli envoy called on the UNSC to condemn Hamas

Terrorists calling the shots.... What next

Hamas urges pressure on Netanyahu for ceasefire
Al Jazeera by Lyndal Rowlands and Zaheena Rasheed 05 September 2024

Extracts:
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu doubled down on a major sticking point in ceasefire negotiations, insisting on a continued Israeli military presence on the Philadelphi Corridor between southern Gaza and Egypt

Hamas says ‘pressure Netanyahu’ to agree ceasefire
Quote
Hamas:
Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu is thwarting a ceasefire deal by refusing to withdraw forces from Gaza’s Philadelphi Corridor

According to leaks reported within Israeli media and Hamas officials who spoke on the record, many of those captives were going to be released in the first phase of a ceasefire deal that never happened

Didn't Hamas release cruel -- propaganda appeal [coerced] videos of the murdered hostages -- taunting....
Yet these same hostages “were going to be released” yeah, right

Israel is also home to a vast US arms depot set up in 1984 to pre-position supplies for its troops in case of a regional conflict, as well as to give Israel quick access to weapons in emergencies.

The Pentagon shipped about 300,000 155mm artillery shells from the War Reserve Stockpile Ammunition-Israel to Ukraine following the Russian invasion.

Stockpiled munitions at the depot have also reportedly been supplied to Israel since the start of the Gaza war.

UK has suspended some arms exports to Israel
ABC Australia by Nelli Saarinen 04 September 2024

Extracts:
  • United Kingdom has suspended some arms exports to Israel
Britain has announced it will immediately suspend 30 of its 350 arms export licences with Israel because of a "clear risk" that such equipment might be used to commit serious violations of international humanitarian law

-- Never mind the terrorists "committing serious violations of international humanitarian law" What law?!
and their terror "methods"

British Foreign minister David Lammy said on Monday the decision only involved those items that could be used in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip -- what else would Israel need them for?.... rather than a blanket ban or an arms embargo

Quote
"We recognise, of course, Israel's need to defend itself against security threats but we are deeply worried by the methods that Israel's employed and by reports of civilian casualties and the destruction of civilian infrastructure particularly" Mr Lammy told parliament
[Unsurprisingly] Israeli leaders have dismissed allegations of war crimes

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the decision "shameful"
Quote
"This shameful decision will not change Israel's determination to defeat Hamas, a genocidal terrorist organisation that savagely murdered 1,200 people on October 7 including 14 British citizens" his office said in a post on X

Mr Netanyahu said the "misguided decision would only embolden Hamas" adding that five British citizens were still being held as hostages in Gaza. "With or without British arms, Israel will win this war and secure our common future" Netanyahu said

UK has suspended some arms exports to Israel
ABC Australia by Nelli Saarinen 04 September 2024

Extracts:
  • Arms items suspended
Among the items included under the suspensions are components for military aircraft including fighter jets, helicopters and drones along with items used for ground targeting, the Associated Press reports

But parts for F-35 fighters will be exempted except? where going directly to Israel as the government said it was not possible to suspend these without jeopardising the jets' entire global programme -- Very considerate!

Sam Perlo-Freeman, research coordinator for Campaign Against Arms Trade, welcomed the UK government's announcement but said the exemption for F-35 parts was "utterly outrageous and unjustifiable"

-- Thanks! Britain for hand-cuffing Israel and boosting the terrorists --
whilst Arms to the terrorists are pouring in unrestricted, into their already boundless Arsenal cache

UK has suspended some arms exports to Israel
ABC Australia by Nelli Saarinen 04 September 2024

Extracts:
  • Why has the UK suspended some of its arms export licences with Israel?
Soon after the Labour Party won the UK election in July 2024 British Foreign Minster David Lammy said he would review arms sales to Israel to ensure these complied with international law

Quote
"The assessment I have received leaves me unable to conclude anything other than that for certain UK arms exports to Israel, there does exist a clear risk that they might be used to commit or facilitate a serious violation of international humanitarian law" Mr Lammy said

A paper released by the UK government on the decision said that the level of aid in Gaza remained "insufficient" and that "Israel could reasonably do more to facilitate humanitarian access and distribution"

"For example, Israel should establish a speedier and more effective system for deconflicting humanitarian aid from military operations" the paper reads It also noted that there had been "credible claims of the mistreatment of detainees"

"The concerns regarding Israel's compliance and commitment in the areas of humanitarian relief and treatment of detainees give cause for concern about its attitude and approach to the conduct of hostilities"

However the paper acknowledged that it was not possible to reach a "determinative judgement" about Israel's conduct of hostilities, partly due to the "opaque and contested information environment in Gaza" and challenges with accessing all the necessary information from Israel -- Inconclusive? Little to No evidence? Yet??....

Quote
Mr Lammy said the decision was "a forward-looking evaluation, not a determination of innocence or guilt" on Israel's part
[Unsurprisingly] Israeli leaders have dismissed allegations of war crimes

UK has suspended some arms exports to Israel
ABC Australia by Nelli Saarinen 04 September 2024

Extracts:
  • Real reason! -- Faith based votes
There is growing domestic political pressure on the UK government to take a firmer line with Israel over the nearly 11-month-long conflict in Gaza. Despite a landslide election win, Prime Minister Keir Starmer's party suffered significant setbacks in areas with large Muslim populations

The government's decision to approve export licences to sell weapons in Israel has been an emotive issue since the start of Israel's Gaza offensive

The British government's announcement came after Palestinian human rights organisation Al-Haq and the UK-based Global Legal Action Network filed a legal challenge aimed at forcing the UK to stop granting any licences for arms exports to Israel

The case has yet to go to a full court hearing

Faith based voting becoming a real and disturbing problem in Western countries including here in Australia

UK has suspended some arms exports to Israel
ABC Australia by Nelli Saarinen 04 September 2024

Extracts:
  • What happens next?
At this stage, it is unclear whether the UK export licences will be permanently revoked

1. Only until Hit and Run terror defeats Israel and Israel lays down and surrenders
2. What a time to pull the plug by United Kingdom, one of Israel's 'supposedly' "closest allies"

The 30 suspended licences represent less than 10 per cent of all UK arms export licences to Israel

Some British politicians and Jewish groups have accused the government of abandoning Israel while others said the decision did not go far enough and advocated for a total ban on arms transfers

Although Britain is a smaller exporter of arms to Israel than the US 65.6% and Germany 29.7% the decision was seen by some analysts as a sign of Israel's increasing diplomatic isolation, according to Reuters

British exports amount to less than 1 per cent of the total arms Israel receives
-- Maybe so.... However Israel still needs to source these "suspended items" elsewhere so as not to jeopardise the chain of operation

While British companies sell a relatively small amount of weapons and components to Israel, the UK is one of Israel's closest allies, so the decision could carry symbolic significance

The military affairs correspondent for Israel's Channel 13 TV said the move could become more serious if other allies followed suit

Quote
British Foreign Minister David Lammy said the suspension would not have a material impact on Israel's security and Britain continued to support its right to self-defence
-- Got it! That's a relief!!

It is not Hamas that is collapsing but Israel

If we continue fighting in Gaza by raiding and re-raiding the same targets, not only won't we bring Hamas to collapse, but we'll collapse...

“The war’s goals — ‘bringing Hamas to collapse’ and ‘freeing all hostages by military pressure’ — have not been achieved.”

Some argue that withdrawing army forces from Gaza after signing a hostage deal with Hamas would be the same as being defeated and surrendering.

They argue that it will return, like a boomerang, in the form of another attack by Hamas and the casualties will be 10 times those we suffered on October 7, 2023.

The UK’s suspension of some arms exports to Israel was highly political – here’s how to understand it. Arms sales are political choices

The way Lammy has applied these restrictions underscores the extent to which such decisions are political. Although the suspensions were couched in legal language and justified on international humanitarian law grounds, they are ultimately a political statement.

The UK government is expressing its disapproval of Israel’s conduct in Gaza in a way that reflects the political context within which they are operating.

1. It has sent a message to the Israeli government without making any real difference to Israel’s capacity to defend itself.
2. And it has couched that decision in legal terms to avoid clashing with the US government on the matter.

The previous government received similar legal advice but chose not to act. This was an equally political choice.

Making this decision shores up the UK’s credibility as a supporter of international humanitarian law at home and abroad.

If it encourages compromise and a hostage deal, the hope is that the hostages, including 14 British citizens, might return home and the people of Gaza might be able to rebuild their lives.

Hamas document details tactics to up pressure on Israel, stall hostage talks
The Times of Israel by TOI staff 06 September 2024 and German newspaper Bild

  • Sinwar's computer 'found'! by Bild
Hamas document details tactics to up pressure on Israel, stall hostage talks — report

According to Bild, terror organization seeks to introduce Arab forces to Strip to serve as buffer with Israel as it rebuilds, disregards Palestinian civilians

A newly revealed Hamas document indicates that the terror group’s main concern in ceasefire negotiations with Israel is to rehabilitate its military capabilities and not to alleviate the suffering of Gaza’s civilian population, German newspaper Bild reported Friday

The spring 2024 document, which Bild said it had obtained exclusively! without offering further details, was reportedly found on a computer in Gaza that belonged to Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar -- How careless! of Sinwar

It articulates Hamas’s strategies and objectives in negotiations with Israel over a potential deal that would see hostages released in exchange for a ceasefire and the release of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel

According to the report, Hamas is indifferent to whether the ongoing war ends quickly, instead prioritizing maintaining the terror group’s military capabilities “exhausting” Israel’s military and political apparatuses and increasing international pressure on Israel

While the terror group admits in the paper that the war, going into its 12th month, has diminished its military capacities, Hamas still seeks to “improve important clauses in the agreement, even if the negotiations continue for an extended period”
Quote
Notably, Palestinian civilian casualties are not mentioned in the document

  • Hamas' psychological warfare
The report also said Hamas lays out a strategy of psychological warfare through the hostages, calling to “continue to exert psychological pressure on the families of the [hostages] both now and in the first phase [of the ceasefire] so that public pressure on the enemy government increases”

This strategy has been demonstrated through Hamas’s periodic publishing of videos of hostages pleading for their release

In the past week, Hamas has published such videos featuring hostages whose bodies were recently recovered from Gaza, days after they were executed by the terror group

Hamas document details tactics to up pressure on Israel, stall hostage talks
The Times of Israel by TOI staff 06 September 2024 and German newspaper Bild

  • Hamas' goals, plans, talking points
In the document, Hamas also plans talking points, blaming “Israel’s stubbornness” as delaying a deal

It also reportedly lists Hamas’s main objectives in a deal. One is securing the release of 100 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel serving life sentences, usually for murder

Another purported Hamas goal is to have forces from Arab countries stationed along the Israel-Gaza border as part of a more permanent ceasefire, to serve as a buffer between Israel and Hamas, thus allowing Hamas to recuperate and reorganize under the protection of these forces

Notably, Israel has also reportedly suggested that a coalition of Arab forces administrate the enclave at some point in the future. Unlike the Hamas proposal, the Israeli plan would see the Arab forces ensuring Hamas does not rehabilitate its military capabilities

Quote
The report also noted that the document does not mention the Philadelphi Corridor, despite the strip of land on the Gaza-Egypt border recently becoming a key sticking point in negotiations. This may be attributed to the time the document was written, as Israel only took control of the Philadelphi Corridor in May 2024

  • Hostages
War broke out on October 7, 2023 when Hamas terrorists infiltrated Israel, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians and kidnapping 251

It is believed that 97 hostages remain in Gaza, including the bodies of at least 33 confirmed dead by the IDF
Hamas released 105 civilians during a weeklong truce in late November and four hostages were released before that

Eight hostages have been rescued by troops alive and the bodies of 37 hostages have also been recovered, including three mistakenly killed by the military as they tried to escape their captors

Hamas is also holding two Israeli civilians who entered the Strip in 2014 and 2015 as well as the bodies of two IDF soldiers who were killed in 2014 -- Didn't know this....

  • casualities of war – still No Military victory
The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 40,000 people in the Strip have been killed or are presumed dead in the fighting so far though the toll cannot be verified and does not differentiate between civilians and fighters. Israel says it has killed some 17,000 combatants in battle and another 1,000 terrorists inside Israel on October 7

Israel has said it seeks to minimize civilian fatalities and stresses that Hamas uses Gaza’s civilians as human shields, fighting from civilian areas including homes, hospitals, schools and mosques

ceasefire-hostage release deal
Negotiators said to believe chance of hostage deal ‘close to zero’; US also pessimistic

Families reportedly told deal unlikely to happen as Netanyahu, Sinwar both hardened stances;

US to delay presenting new proposal, does not want to reward Hamas after executions
Biden also does not want to make any concessions that would seem to reward Hamas’s recent murder of six hostages, the officials said.

Mixed messages’ from the White House over Israel-Hamas war
Former British commander Richard Kemp analyses the “mixed messages” coming out of Washington regarding the United States’ support for Israel. “This is one of the key issues here in Israel at the moment is that the ceasefire oblique hostage release negotiations have been going on for a considerable time now,”

“Just recently President Biden suggested that Netanyahu is not doing enough to get the hostages released yet in recent weeks and days the deputy director of the CIA has praised Israel for going pretty much all the way as far as it can possibly go in terms of compromising on negotiations – and the same is true of Secretary of State.”

BBC breached own guidelines 1,500 times in early Gaza war coverage, report claims.
BBC denies 'pattern of bias' against Israel, queries methodology.

Using AI to analyze 9 million words of coverage from first four months of war, researchers find Israel was associated with war crimes, genocide far more often than Hamas was.

The BBC breached its own editorial guidelines 1,533 times in its early coverage of the Israel-Hamas war, according to a new report detailed by The Telegraph.

Researchers led by British-Israeli lawyer and longtime BBC critic Trevor Asserson used artificial intelligence to analyze the first four months of coverage by the network, beginning with the Hamas terror group’s attack on Israel on October 7 that started the war, and found “a deeply worrying pattern of bias” against Israel.

The researchers, a team of about 20 lawyers and 20 data scientists, used artificial intelligence to analyze some nine million words of coverage, across several languages and platforms. Their report runs about a hundred pages and will be released to the public on Monday, according to The Spectator.

The report found that in BBC coverage Israel was associated with war crimes, genocide, and international law violations far more often than Hamas was.

It also claimed that the BBC downplayed Hamas terrorism, and asserted that the BBC’s Arabic service was among the most biased global media outlets in covering the Israel-Hamas conflict.

A BBC spokesman said the network had “serious questions about the methodology of this report, particularly its heavy reliance on AI to analyze impartiality, and its interpretation of the BBC’s editorial guidelines.

“We don’t think coverage can be assessed solely by counting particular words divorced from context. We are required to achieve due impartiality, rather than the ‘balance of sympathy’ proposed in the report, and we believe our knowledgeable and dedicated correspondents are achieving this,” the spokesman added, while pledging to study the report and respond directly to its authors.

The report found that, though the BBC said in October that it would describe Hamas “where possible” as a “proscribed terrorist organization,” Hamas’s designation as a listed terror group was only noted 3.2 percent of the time.

It was not immediately clear whether that statistic counted each mention individually, or whether it was considering only the group’s first mention in a given report.

Apart from the data science component, researchers alleged that a number of freelance journalists employed by the BBC had a history of openly expressing support for Hamas, without disclosing that affinity to viewers.

It cited Mayssaa Abdul Khalek, a Lebanon-based reporter who has contributed to broadcasts for BBC Arabic, who has called for the “death to Israel” and has tweeted: “Sir Hitler, rise, there are a few people that need to be burned.”

It also cited Marie-Jose Al Azzi, another Lebanon-based contributor who described terrorists killed on October 7 as “the first of the martyrs of the operation.”

Israel’s Foreign Ministry shared the Telegraph article to X on Sunday, and the report was hailed by Jewish community groups and Israel-related media watchdogs who said it provided evidence for what they’d long already known about the BBC.

“The BBC breached its own editorial guidelines more than 1,500 times during the height of the Israel-Hamas war, a damning report has found…”

“The report’s analysis of BBC coverage found that Israel was associated with war crimes four times more than Hamas… — Israel Foreign Ministry September 8, 2024

“This report vindicates with empirical data what we have said – and the Jewish community has known – for a long time,” said Gideon Falter, leader of the Campaign Against Antisemitism, who called for “a transparent and unconstrained public inquiry” into the matter.

Laurence Julius, vice-chairman of the UK’s National Jewish Assembly, said the publicly funded broadcaster “has failed abjectly and this is nurturing an anti Israel and antisemitic narrative across its network. It has to change.”

Some British lawmakers also responded to the report.

Sir Oliver Dowden, shadow deputy prime minister, said that “serious questions should be asked,” while Conservative MP Greg Smith called on government authorities to “use every tool they have in their arsenal to bring about greater compliance with the rules around neutrality and fair coverage in the BBC charter.”

Asserson, the British-Israeli lawyer at the helm of the report, has produced several reports in the past alleging anti-Israel bias at the BBC.

In 2000, Asserson founded BBCWatch, a nonprofit with the explicit mission of monitoring the network’s coverage of the Middle East, publishing six studies over the next six years.

He released another report in 2008 accusing BBC Arabic of bias in its coverage two years earlier of the Second Lebanon War.

He is now launching a new organization, according to the Telegraph, called Campaign for Media Standards, to monitor bias in British media.

What's new -- Biased reporters whipping up antisemitism even on supposedly 'reputed' news agencies and such agencies letting it go on

Then again such agencies have not been impartial, unbiased in their media coverage....

Two soldiers were killed and several were injured when an Israeli Air Force helicopter crashed in the southern Gaza Strip early Wednesday, in what the military described as an accident.

Both served in the IAF’s elite search and rescue Unit 669.

Black Hawk flew to Rafah to evacuate seriously wounded combat engineer; due to unknown reason, it failed to touch down correctly in IDF encampment.

According to an initial IAF probe, a UH-60 Black Hawk from the 123rd Squadron flew to Rafah with a Unit 669 medical team on Tuesday night to evacuate a combat engineer seriously wounded in fighting in the area.

During the final landing stage inside an Israeli army encampment in Rafah at around 12:30 a.m., the helicopter impacted the ground instead of touching down correctly.

According to the probe, the helicopter was not hit by enemy fire, and the crash occurred moments before it was supposed to land, meaning it did not fall from a significant height.

The helicopter was still heavily damaged in the crash, and all those aboard it were injured.

It was still unclear what led to the crash, although the IAF described it as an accident.

IAF Chief Maj. Gen. Tomer Bar ordered a probe to determine why the helicopter impacted the ground in the encampment instead of landing correctly.

Black Hawk helicopters, known in the IAF as the Yanshuf — Owl in Hebrew — are used for both routine transportation missions and to drop off and pick up troops during military operations.

Amid the war in Gaza, the choppers have been used for medical evacuations from inside the Strip, taking close to 2,000 wounded soldiers to hospitals in Israel.

IDF declares Hamas’s Rafah Brigade defeated; no active cross-border tunnels found

Military discloses just 9 tunnels crossed from Gaza to Egypt, all had been blocked up before IDF arrived; over 2,000 terror operatives killed, 13 km of underground passages destroyed

RAFAH, Gaza Strip — The Hamas terror group’s Rafah Brigade has been decimated, at least 2,308 of its operatives have been killed by the Israel Defense Forces, and over 13 kilometers (8 miles) worth of tunnels have been destroyed, military officials told reporters in the Gaza Strip’s southernmost city on Thursday.

Now, as the IDF maintains control of the entire city and the border area with Egypt, known as the Philadelphi Corridor, combat engineers are completing their investigations of a few dozen Hamas tunnels that have not yet been demolished, an operation that will not take longer than a few weeks.

With seemingly no hostage deal with the terror group on the horizon — under which the IDF would likely have to withdraw from the Gaza Strip, including the Philadelphi Corridor — it currently remains unclear what the IDF will do in Rafah once the last tunnel is destroyed.

Senior military officials said they would carry out whatever missions the political echelon eventually orders them to complete.

“The Rafah Brigade has been defeated,” Brig. Gen. Itzik Cohen, the general in charge of the offensive in the city, told reporters at the Philadelphi Corridor. “Their four battalions have been destroyed, and we have completed operational control over the entire urban area.”

Old but still chilling.... when Sinwar was Hamas's leader in the Gaza Strip, led Hamas within Gaza since 2017 having joined its ranks in the early 1980s and the Architect of the October 7, 2023 brutal massacre -- is now the new leader of Hamas

We Will Wipe Out Israel, Not Disarm, Says Hamas Leader in Gaza
Hamas’s leader in the Gaza Strip has said the Islamist group is focused on wiping out the state of Israel and has no intention of disarming.

Yahya Sinwar, a hardliner who was elected head of Hamas in Gaza in February this year, made the comments at a meeting of Palestinian youth and in the presence of the press. However, his most inflammatory statements were stricken from the official record of the meeting, the Times of Israel reported.

“Over is the time Hamas spent discussing recognizing Israel. Now Hamas will discuss when we will wipe out Israel,” Sinwar said, according to the Hamas-linked news agency Shehab.

Sinwar’s comments came despite calls from the U.S. for the Islamist paramilitary organization, which has held power in Gaza since 2007, to disarm.

Speaking Thursday, Mideast envoy Jason Greenblatt said Hamas needed to lay down its weapons and recognize Israel if it were to join a unity government with its more moderate rival Fatah.

“Any Palestinian government must unambiguously and explicitly commit to nonviolence, recognize the State of Israel, accept previous agreements and obligations between the parties—including to disarm terrorists—and commit to peaceful negotiations,” Greenblatt said.

Hamas immediately rejected the appeals in a statement. However, Sinwar elaborated at yesterday’s meeting that the group would only disarm “when Satan enters paradise.”

He added the U.S. and Israel could not force Hamas to disarm. “There’s not one minute of the day or night when we aren’t building up our military might,” Sinwar said.

“We make the headlines only with blood,” Sinwar had said. No blood, no news.”
and "this thug Sinwar's" unremitting dedication to the eventual destruction of Israel remains unchanged even gone up a notch since October

In addition, they have to fend for themselves, among others
1. no help
2. no organised evacuation
3. no transport
4. not even temporary housing let alone....
5. being shunted between “safe” zones multiple times
6. little to no essentials of food, water, medicine, electricity, fuel
7. humanitarian aid not reaching them past terrorists Hamas
8. infrastructure pretty much non-existent
9. little to no health / medical facilities
10. living in constant fear, in unsafe, unsanitary conditions
11. being used as human shields by terrorists Hamas
12. terrorists Hamas prevents / restricts civilians to evacuate or seek shelter
13. and what UNRWA is doing / not doing

I reckon, majority just wants to live in freedom, peace and security without being ruled by terror

According to news reports, around 300,000 Israelis were demonstrating / protesting at the murder of six Israeli hostages and for the release of the other Israeli hostages

I can't recall any protests even by a fraction, not a murmur.... at the death toll of innocent Palestinian civilians -- count inflated by terrorists Hamas run sources or not

Again, Every life is equally precious whether Israeli, Palestinian or -- innocent men, women and children

Israel repeatedly says, it seeks to minimize civilian fatalities and stresses that Hamas uses Gaza’s civilians as human shields, fighting from civilian areas including homes, hospitals, schools and mosques
