So we all hate Rats, I think we can all agree they are pieces of shit. Especially the ones who RAT on their friends and own crew.

But in the general big picture, what is the real reason or reasons they choose to become a RAT?

Pyranoid of being whacked?

Afraid of serious prison time? The idea and thrill of being a mobster brings them into the life, but once they get any pressure from the FEDS they crack and agree to cooperate.

Being asked to kill someone even though they are not cut out for it mentally?

Someone not giving them a share of what they are owed and fucking them over which drives them to become a RAT?

What are your opinions?

Pyranoid of being whacked?

Maybe in the 1980s when bosses like Scarfo or Amuso can order to kill someone only for the suspect to be a rat.
Now because mob dont kill anymore so you can rat, made money with podcasts or books and walk in the old hoods without risk.

If a mobster dont have a son in the life or other reasons,it's unlikely that he'll accept long sentences and maybe get out after 20 years and find himself without money, not to mention that he risks being killed or injured in prison.

If I was facing serious time I wouldn't hesitate to rat. I would be honored

They are afraid of prison, or too selfish to adhere to the oath they took.

They were rats before any circumstance. They just hadn't ratted yet.

My only issue are the lenient sentences some of them get after cooperating I understand sentence reduction is part of the deal but when they have committed many murders and get 5 years it’s not fair to the victims families

Most of Sammy the Bull's "victims" were gangsters themselves. The only one worthy of sympathy is the 16-year old kid.

. It’s still a murder. But yes I agree it’s different than innocent victims like Alan Kaiser, John Favara, Dominick Ragucci, and others

Most guys rat because they dont want to do a long prison stretch. Some rat when facing little time.
Then you have a guy willing to do time and while inside he finds out his old friends are hitting on his wife and taking his money. In a way….. could u blame em.
The false rat label is another.

I can sort of emphasize with some, but for many, trading your gangster legacy for a disgraced life in the WPP doesn't seem like a good tradeoff for me. Speaking of the Witness Protection Program, is it even used or necessary anymore? Rats are openly prancing around like bantam roosters these days without a care in the world.
