From: BBC September 13, 2024 Israeli special forces 'raid missile site in Syria'
Details are emerging of an apparent raid by Israeli special forces on a "Hezbollah missile production facility" in Syria.
Israel's government has said nothing about the operation which, according to US media reports, took place at the beginning of the week.
Syrian state media say 18 people were killed on Monday in the raid near the Syrian city of Masyaf - around 25 miles (40km) north of the Lebanese border - and several dozen were injured.
According to the New York Times, Israeli special forces descended from helicopters, placed explosives inside the Iranian-built facility and removed sensitive information.
American and other officials quoted in the paper paint a picture of a daring operation, designed to destroy the underground military facility.
Air strikes were apparently used to neutralise Syria’s defences and prevent reinforcements from reaching the site.
Separately, a report by the Axios news site - citing three sources said to be familiar with the operation - says the elite Shaldag unit of the Israeli Air Force carried out the raid. Axios also reports that Israel informed the US before the operation was slated to take place, and was not met with any resistance from the White House.
The BBC has not yet been able to independently verify these reports.
Israel's government has not commented, but the raid seems to have been designed to prevent Iran from supplying precision missiles to Hezbollah, its Lebanese ally and proxy.
Israel attacked the facility six years ago and has mounted dozens of air strikes against Syria since the war in Gaza began almost a year ago. But, putting Israeli troops on the ground inside Syria is highly unusual. This would be one of the most sophisticated operations of its kind in years.
Last Sunday, at least 18 people were killed in Israeli air strikes on a number of military sites in the vicinity of Masyaf, according to the Syrian health minister.
Israeli strikes have reportedly been stepped up since the start of the war in Gaza in October last year, in response to cross-border attacks on northern Israel by Hezbollah and other groups in Lebanon and Syria.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) - a UK-based monitoring group with a network of sources on the ground - Israeli air and artillery strikes have targeted Syrian territory on more than 60 occasions since the start of the year.
This has resulted in damage to or destruction of about 140 targets, including weapons depots, vehicles and Iran-backed militia headquarters, the SOHR said.
The strikes have killed at least 208 fighters - including 46 members of Syrian government forces, 43 members of Hezbollah and 24 Iranian Revolutionary Guards - as well as 22 civilians, the monitoring group added.

Who has the best yarning Spin Doctors! Israel or the terrorists.... From: The Times of Israel September 13, 2024 IDF declares Hamas’s Rafah Brigade defeated; no active cross-border tunnels found Gallant reveals document from top Hamas commander warning Sinwar of dire lossesThe Times of Israel by By Emanuel Fabian and Agencies 11 September 2024 Remaining Hamas fighters 'broken' mentally or physically -- and the Israeli soldiers? IDF strikes Hamas command center in Nuseirat school-turned-shelter, announces earlier killings of Hamas operatives who participated October 7, 2023 and guarded hostage Noa Marciano Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Wednesday revealed a document -- How helpful! leaving a copy! Gallant said the document was written by the former commander of Hamas’s Khan Younis Brigade in southern Gaza, Rafa’a Salameh and addressed to Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and his brother Muhammad, in which the commander described the “difficult situation” in which the terror group had found itself Salameh, a mastermind of the terror group’s October 7 massacre, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in southern Gaza in July 2024 that also killed senior Hamas commander Muhammad Deif In the letter, Salameh wrote: “Please consider the following: We maintain the remaining weapons and equipment, as we have lost 90-95 percent of our rocket capabilities; and we have lost some 60% of our personal weapons; we have lost at least 65-70% of our anti-tank launchers and rockets” according to excerpts provided and translated by the Defense Ministry “Most importantly” Salameh continued “we have lost at least 50% of our fighters between those who are martyred and wounded and now we are left with 25% The last 25% of our people have reached a situation where the people do not tolerate them anymore, broken on a mental or physical level” Gallant said the document showed “a real hardship that affects Hamas and affects the most senior commanders” Salameh “cries out for the help of the Sinwar brothers but of course they cannot save him” Gallant said. “Why? Because we are continuing the effort that started in October and continues step by step… and reaches all senior Hamas officials. Salameh wrote this to the Sinwar brothers, we will get to them as well” the defense minister continued Yahya Sinwar is the leader of Hamas in Gaza and is considered a mastermind of the group’s October 7, 2023 attack, when thousands of terrorists invaded southern Israel from the Gaza Strip, killing some 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, starting the ongoing war Sinwar was last month appointed as the head of the terror group following the July 31 assassination of previous leader Ismail Haniyeh. Sinwar's brother Muhammad is a senior commander in Hamas’s military wing Gallant’s presentation of the document came on the same day as two Israeli soldiers were killed and several others wounded in a helicopter crash attempting to extract a third, seriously wounded soldier from the battlefield. The crash was not a result of enemy fire Gallant also published a video on social media Wednesday from the same facility, showing a photo of Muhammad Sinwar’s children posing in front of a depiction of the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center in the United States The photo was discovered recently in a tunnel underneath Khan Younis, Gallant said in the video, which was posted on the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. A picture is worth a thousand words. This picture was found in a tunnel where the Sinwar brothers were hiding like rats On 9/11 we remember the horrific attack on our closest ally, the U.S. And we remember that our fight against terrorism, against Hamas, is the fight of the free world Meanwhile, an Israeli airstrike Wednesday in central Gaza struck a group of Hamas operatives at a command room embedded within a former school According to the military, Hamas was using the Al-Jaouni School in Nuseirat to plan and carry out attacks against troops and Israel. The school has been serving as a shelter for displaced Gazans Hospital officials reported 14 people killed, including two children, in the strike The IDF said it carried out “many steps,” including using precision munitions, aerial surveillance and other intelligence, to limit civilian casualties in the strike"
“The Hamas terror organization systematically violates international law, brutally exploiting civilian institutions and the population as a human shield for terror activity” the military said In recent months, dozens of airstrikes have been carried out against Hamas sites embedded within schools and other sites used as shelters for civilians, according to the IDF The IDF also announced on Wednesday that recent airstrikes in Gaza had killed two Hamas terrorists who participated in the October 7 onslaught, one of whom was involved in guarding Corporal Noa Marciano, an abducted soldier who was killed by Hamas at Shifa Hospital and whose body was recovered in November A separate drone strike recently killed Ayman Khaled Ahmed Abu al-Yahni, who the IDF said was a member of Hamas’s elite Nukhba force and was involved in attacking the Erez Crossing during the October 7 onslaught, the military announced

Israel’s prime target: the hunt for Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. There is no shortage of expertise among Sinwar’s hunters. Would his death or capture stop the war? Whether it would stop the war is quite another question.
Michael Milshtein, a former head of the Palestinian affairs section in Israeli Military Intelligence (Aman): “But remember, Sinwar prepared for a decade for this offensive and IDF intelligence was very surprised by the size and length of the tunnels under Gaza and how sophisticated they were.”
“It is an ideological war, not a war about Sinwar.”
“I’m quite sure that someone will replace, or actually has already replaced, Mohammed Deif, and if Sinwar is killed there will be someone else … You cannot create a fantasy. It will not end the war.”
The IDF estimates there are 500km (300 miles) of tunnels under Gaza, an entire underground city.
Targeted killings have been a core tactic of Israel’s military since the founding of the state. Since the second world war, Israel has assassinated more people than any other country in the western world.
The assumption made by Sinwar’s trackers is that he has long since abandoned using electronic communication, well aware of the skills and technology possessed by his pursuers.
Sinwar’s death or capture would undoubtedly be hailed as a major military success by Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, which has made the destruction of Hamas’s “military and governing capabilities” a primary war aim.
Out of its two primary war aims, the Netanyahu government puts the destruction of Hamas above the rescue of the hostages.

Israel’s prime target: the hunt for Hamas leader Yahya SinwarThe Guardian by Julian Borger in Jerusalem 14 September 2024 - Israeli Security Agency Shabak vs Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar
Extracts: Motivated pursuers using advanced technology and brute force have yet to pin down their cautious quarry A video recorded on Hamas security cameras -- How helpful! leaving the footage! at about the same time, on 10 October 2023 and found by the Israeli military some months later, shows Sinwar following his wife and three children through a narrow tunnel and disappearing into the murk According to Gaza health officials 41,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed in a devastating Israeli response that has flattened much of the territory, driving 90% of the population from their homes and bringing 2.3 million people to the edge of famine Through all this, the prime target of the Israeli bombardment has remained at large and apparently unscathed The nearly year-long hunt for Sinwar has involved a mix of advanced technology and brute force as his pursuers have shown themselves prepared to go to any lengths, including causing extremely high civilian casualties, to kill the Hamas leader and destroy the tight circle around him The hunters are a taskforce of intelligence officers, special operation units from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) military engineers and surveillance experts under the umbrella of the Israeli Security Agency, more widely known by its Hebrew initials or the acronym Shabak Personally and institutionally, this team is seeking redemption for the security failures that allowed the 07 October 2023 assault to happen. But despite their motivation, they have so far failed to pin down their quarry There is no shortage of expertise among Sinwar’s hunters Targeted killings have been a core tactic of Israel’s military since the founding of the state. Since the second world war, Israel has assassinated more people than any other country in the western world Yahalom, a special section within the Combat Engineering Corps, has more experience in tunnel warfare than any of its counterparts in western armies and has access to state-of-the-art US-made ground-penetrating radar The clandestine signals intelligence unit 8200 is a global leader in electronic warfare and has been eavesdropping on Hamas communications for decades -- Yet dropped the ball 07 October 2023 massacre -- which has led Israel to the terrible place they are now in -- Global pariah on the world stage Despite the capabilities of this formidable taskforce, it has come close to catching Sinwar just once, in a bunker beneath his home town of Khan Younis in late January The assumption made by Sinwar’s trackers is that he has long since abandoned using electronic communication, well aware of the skills and technology possessed by his pursuers It was not only Hebrew that Sinwar studied in Israeli jail but also the habits and culture of his enemy “Sinwar really understands the basic instincts and the deepest feelings of Israeli society” said Michael Milshtein, now at the Moshe Dayan Center at Tel Aviv University “I’m quite sure every move Sinwar makes is based on his understanding of Israel” But but.... Sinwar's been out of Israel's 'inner circle'! for 13 years when Sinwar was released in prisoner exchange in 2011Sinwar still communicates with the outside world, albeit with apparent difficulty The long negotiations over a ceasefire in Cairo and Doha have often been paused while messages are sent to and from the subterranean commander One strong possibility is that Sinwar uses couriers to remain in command, drawn from a small and shrinking coterie of aides he trusts, starting with his brother Mohammed, a senior military commander in Gaza It is the hope of the team hunting Sinwar that the need for contact with couriers, to issue orders and control the hostage negotiations, will ultimately prove his undoing, just as a courier led American trackers over several years to Osama bin Laden’s hideout in Abbottabad, Pakistan

US and UK stress commitment to Israel's security, desire for ceasefireThe Jerusalem Post 15 September 2024 - US and UK - Israel's security
The UK and US remain committed to Israel's security, desire for ceasefire, the two countries said in a joint statement on US-UK strategic dialogue on Saturday night US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy met in London to discuss parts of the US-UK partnership, including "unwavering support for Ukraine"
and "the promotion of peace and security in the Middle East, including through a ceasefire in Gaza" Lammy expressed the UK's support for mediation efforts and both countries stressed the desire to avoid regional escalation and work towards a two-state solution Both said they were seeking a "lasting security solution along the Blue Line that will allow Israeli and Lebanese civilians on both sides to return to their homes with safety and security" They also called on all parties to protect civilians and for Israel to allow for the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza Both countries welcomed the polio vaccination campaign The United States and the United Kingdom also discussed Iran's role in bringing instability to the region through the "proliferation of advanced weaponry" as well as financing and supporting Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis and others Talk is cheap! Getting cheaper and cheaper....

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy met in London to discuss parts of the US-UK partnership, including "unwavering support for Ukraine"
and "the promotion of peace and security in the Middle East, including through a ceasefire in Gaza" Again, double standards and hypocrisy 1. Why no "promotion of peace and security in Russia-Ukraine region, including through a ceasefire" 2. No condemnation of incursion into Russia 3. in fact, more Military and other aid - Israel's security
- Ukraine
- Stance on Iran
Talk is cheap! Getting cheaper and cheaper.... And Free Globe-trotting -- Achieved Nothing 1. Russia-Ukraine war more than Two had a Half years 2. Israel-terrorists war coming to One year

New Israeli poll shows PM Netanyahu's party advancingReuters Reporting by James Mackenzie, Editing by Timothy Heritage September 13, 2024 JERUSALEM - An opinion poll on Friday showed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing Likud party would form the largest single party in parliament if an election were held now, underlining a gradual recovery since the October 7, 2023 attacks last year The poll, published in the left-wing Ma'ariv daily, showed Likud winning 24 seats, against 32 at present, its highest score in the Ma'ariv poll since October 7 It put the National Unity Party led by centrist former general Benny Gantz on 21 Netanyahu's right-wing coalition with a clutch of nationalist-religious and ultra-Orthodox parties would lose any election held now, with 53 seats in the 120-seat parliament, against 58 for the main opposition bloc, according to the poll But Likud's advance shows how far Netanyahu has moved since last year when his standing was hit by public fury at the security failures when Hamas gunmen stormed into Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking more than 250 hostages Earlier in the war against Hamas in Gaza, opinion polls regularly showed Likud gaining no more than 16-18 seats in parliament The survey also showed Netanyahu's personal standing as prime minister recovering, with respondents favouring him over any alternative potential candidate apart from former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, who is now out of politics Despite coalition tensions between Netanyahu and several ministers and regular protests by Israelis demanding a deal to bring home the Gaza hostages, the government has held together for almost two years. An election is not due until 2026 Netanyahu has clashed with Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, from his own party and two hardliners - National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich While Likud has climbed steadily, support has not followed for the two nationalist religious parties, Jewish Power, led by Ben-Gvir and Religious Zionism, under Smotrich, giving both parties an incentive not to leave the government

This view is supported by Israel’s domestic security agency, Shin Bet, which has said Hamas diverts at least 60% of the goods entering Gaza for their own purposes.

Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas have been at war since early October 2023
It began when Hamas gunmen launched an unprecedented attack on Israel from Gaza - the deadliest in Israel's history. An Israeli military campaign has followed, which has killed thousands in the Palestinian territory.
Hamas became the sole ruler of Gaza after violently ejecting political rivals in 2007. It has an armed wing and was thought to have about 30,000 fighters before the start of the war.
The group, whose name stands for Islamic Resistance Movement, wants to create an Islamic state in place of Israel.
Hamas rejects Israel's right to exist and is committed to its destruction.
Hamas justified its attack as a response to what it calls Israeli crimes against the Palestinian people.
These include security raids on Islam's third holiest site - the al-Aqsa Mosque, in occupied East Jerusalem - and Jewish settlement activity in the occupied West Bank.
Hamas also wants thousands of Palestinian prisoners in Israel to be freed and for an end to the blockade of the Gaza Strip by Israel and Egypt - something both countries say is for security.
It has fought several wars with Israel since it took power, fired thousands of rockets and carried out many other deadly attacks.
Israel has repeatedly attacked Hamas with air strikes and sent troops into Gaza in 2008 and 2014.
Hamas, or in some cases its armed wing alone, is considered a terrorist group by Israel, the US, the EU, and the UK, among others.
Iran backs Hamas with funding, weapons and training.
