The 'ndrangheta boss Carmine Demetrio Santaiti (born in 1954) , a prisoner under the 41bis regime and a long-time cancer patient, died in the penitentiary ward of the "San Paolo" hospital in Milan .
Santaiti, known as "Melo", was convicted at the end of the "Cosa Mia" trial with the ruling of the Supreme Court that, in 2017, put an end to the maxi trial against the Gallico clan of Palmi and that of the Bruzzise of Barritteri of Seminara. 'ndrangheta families involved in a feud that, between 1980 and 1988, led to the murder of 52 people.
According to the investigation, in particular, the '54-born man was considered the instigator and executor of the murder of Carmelo Ditto, killed in Seminara on September 20, 2006.
Furthermore, the '54-born man had been arrested in 2005 by the investigative unit of the Carabinieri of Imperia and by the Diano Marina station, because, as a fugitive, he was hiding in Diano Castello. At the time of his arrest, the man was with his cousin Antonio De Marte of Diano Marina, who was also arrested for aiding and abetting a fugitive. (g.curcio@corrierecal.it)
