117 years of prison requested for seven defendants in the “Malea” trial on the 'ndrangheta of Mammola, accused of extortion and drug trafficking
Public Prosecutor Giovanni Calamita, of the Reggio Calabria District Anti-Mafia Directorate, has requested sentences totaling 117 years and 8 months of imprisonment for seven defendants in the trial arising from Operation “Malea,” who have opted for a summary trial. The sentencing requests concern Damiano Abbate (20 years), Salvatore Nicodemo Abbate (16 years and 8 months), Isidoro Callà (20 years), Ferdinando Cimino (15 years), Fabrizio D'Alessandra (8 years), Nicodemo Deciso (18 years), and Rodolfo Scali (20 years).
During the closing speech, the prosecutor reconstructed the results of the investigation “Malea” – from the ancient name of Mammola – conducted by the Flying Squad, which thanks to numerous wiretaps documented the existence of the alleged leaders and members of the “Mammola 'ndrangheta local”. The organization was allegedly able to control the territory through extortion activities, influencing entrepreneurship, especially in the forestry sector, and also financing itself through the production and trafficking of narcotics.
The prosecutor also requested the acquittal of Raffaele Romeo, defended by the lawyer Lorenzo Gatto. Calamita, who will soon leave the Reggio Calabria DDA to move to the Bari Prosecutor's Office, stressed the importance of the evidence collected during the investigation.
