WASHINGTON - The U.S. government is at a loss as the Middle East slides toward a broader war. With just a month to go before the U.S. presidential election, the escalation is particularly inconvenient for the White House.
The Biden administration's attempts to separate arch-foes Israel and Iran have failed after Tehran renewed its direct attack on the Jewish state with some 180 ballistic missiles. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the attack was "effectively repelled" with the help of the US and "other partners".

US course appears to be failing
The US government has consistently pushed for de-escalation in the rising tensions between Israel and Iran. After the unprecedented Iranian attack with more than three hundred missiles and drones in April – which crossed a so-called red line – the White House preached calm. At the time, President Biden announced after a crisis meeting after just a few hours that there would be no retaliation. This earned him strong criticism from Republicans in Congress.
