Cocaine production may reach new record | Navy ship seizes 7,000 kilos in one month
There are indications that cocaine production in South America will grow to a new record this year. In Colombia, more has already been seized this year than in 2023 and coca leaf production has increased there. Last month, the Dutch navy ship Zr. MS. Holland seized a huge amount of cocaine in the Caribbean, around 7,000 kilos.

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Defense announced that 1,865 kilos of cocaine and 420 kilos of marijuana were seized in the Caribbean Sea about 2 weeks ago. A suspicious boat was stopped by targeted shots somewhere at sea near the ABC Islands. Five passengers were arrested and handed over to the American Coast Guard for trial in the United States.

In Colombia, the head of the anti-drug unit at the U.S. Embassy in Bogotá said in an interview yesterday that the size of the country's coca leaf harvests has reached record levels. The production of coca leaf is monitored in the United States by the State Department and the White House. The United Nations' anti-crime agency UNODC also has a coca monitoring program. It does this by analyzing satellite images and market prices in the major coca-producing countries of Bolivia, Peru and Colombia.

So probably more cocaine has already entered the world market this year. But the price of a kilo of cocaine has increased in recent years in the wholesale trade in Rotterdam and Antwerp, to over € 27,000.
