This is how Carmine Gallo, the former super-cop who ended up under house arrest in the investigation by the Milan Anti-Mafia District, expressed himself to his partner Calamucci. He was referring to his former colleague at the Rho-Pero police station, for whom the investigating judge has ordered a 6-month suspension from public office.
At the center of the investigation is an alleged group dedicated to the trade in private investigation services, implemented however through "illegal conduct of abusive access to computer systems used by the Ministry of the Interior and the police force." For the Milanese Anti-Mafia District, one of the pillars of the association and undisputed "boss" «is undoubtedly Carmine Gallo», former Inspector of the State Police, with an important role in the management of some of the most well-known collaborators of justice who have contributed to reconstructing the criminal dynamics of dangerous mafia groups operating in Lombardy. "(…) I told the employees, go get a coffee, I'll see you in half an hour..." he continues. "I closed the doors and everything, everything that was there, I photographed, I photocopied, I took everything... the CDs, I copied everything that was there, I took it and took it away!".
Data stolen obviously in a completely illegal way, part of a very rich archive built by the ex-policeman Gallo, to be exploited eventually through "Equalize srl". The company, in fact, would have been used to then try to "legalize" the illegally acquired information, attributing, at least apparently, a legal origin, "artfully camouflaging the actual origin of the information" the prosecutors note, "to be able to provide third parties with "usable" information in any place".

INTERPOL’s I-CAN project targets the ‘Ndrangheta, Italy’s most powerful mafia.

GLASGOW, United Kingdom: An international police coalition coordinated by INTERPOL has led to the arrest of more than 100 key ‘Ndrangheta members since the project’s launch in 2020.

The 100th and 101st arrests occurred during a coordinated operation last month supported by INTERPOL in Germany and Italy.

German authorities raided three houses, seizing a large cache of information, including cloud data. The police also found significant amounts of cash, luxury watches and jewelry.

The Italian authorities acted in parallel, arresting two suspects, seizing multiple properties and vehicles, and freezing bank accounts.

A Calabrian businessman with alleged links to two ‘Ndrangheta clans was arrested in Bologna while a second suspect was arrested the same day in the city of Formia.

The operation took place within the framework of an investigation led by Italy’s Guardia di Finanza in Bologna.

INTERPOL Secretary General Jürgen Stock said:

“The ‘Ndrangheta are a global scourge and demonstrate the unprecedented threat posed by transnational organized crime groups. Yet the success of the I-CAN project makes clear that even the most powerful mafias are not out of reach when law enforcement cooperates across borders.”

Giampiero Ianni, Brigadier General of the Guardia di Finanza, said:

“I-CAN’s 101 arrests show there is no escape for members of the ‘Ndrangheta. With the support of INTERPOL, we have been able to investigate this insidious organization, mapping its international development and working together with prosecutors to apprehend its fugitives.”


The arrests occurred during a coordinated operation last month supported by INTERPOL in Germany and Italy.

The ‘Ndrangheta is often considered one of the most extensive and powerful criminal organizations in the world.

Its roots are in the Italian region of Calabria but it has now expanded to more than 40 countries worldwide and continues to grow at a steady rate.

The insidious spread of mafia-type crime poses an urgent threat to international peace and security, due to its penetration of political and economic environments and the widespread corruption associated with it.

Funded by the Italian Department of Public Security, INTERPOL’s I-CAN project raises global awareness and understanding about the ‘Ndrangheta and their modus operandi, sharing police information to dismantle their networks and operations and arrest wanted suspects.

BOLOGNA Bologna GUP Andrea Salvatore Romito has substantially accepted – while excluding, for the defendants who were charged with the aggravating circumstance of mafia – the requests of the prosecutor of the Bologna DDA Roberto Ceroni in the first-degree trial with abbreviated procedure resulting from the operation “Aspromonte emiliano” , which in May 2023 had allowed the dismantling of an organization dedicated to the trafficking of cocaine, hashish and marijuana. Ceroni had in fact requested sentences of over 350 years in prison for the 35 defendants , and today GUP Andrea Salvatore Romito has imposed sentences of 338 years and 10 months , among which stands out the 20-year sentence for Giuseppe Romeo “Maluferru”, of the 'ndrina of San Luca also known as “Staccu”, a former super fugitive arrested in Spain in 2021 and believed to be the head of the organization. The defendants were charged, to varying degrees, with the crimes of drug trafficking, money laundering, fictitious registration of assets, kidnapping for the purpose of extortion and weapons , and according to the prosecution, the undisputed leader of the criminal organization was none other than Romeo. This organization included Italians belonging to or close to the 'ndrangheta of Reggio Calabria and Crotone and active in Emilia-Romagna, who had direct contact with the Colombian drug cartels, and also Chinese criminals. Some of the defendants were also given fines totaling 66,000 euros, and all but two were given three years of probation once they had served their sentences. Furthermore, 10 defendants were acquitted of some of the charges they were charged with because they did not commit the crime. Finally, the sentence - the reasons for which will be filed within 90 days - orders the confiscation of the seized assets.

Stories of ‘ndrangheta that repeat themselves every time, the manifesto of an attitude, that of Calabrian organized crime, to control the territory and to challenge the police forces. Recurring episodes, therefore, among which are also included the events in the Lamezia territory and that on the border with the province of Vibonese e. In this portion of Calabria, in fact, the investigation of the Catanzaro Anti-Mafia District had dealt a hard blow to the Anello-Fruci clan thanks to the operation “Imponimento”: dozens of arrests and beheaded families, up to the sentences issued in the first degree in ordinary and already on appeal in abbreviated, including the “bosses” of the two factions: Rocco Anello, Tommaso Anello, Vincenzino and Pino Fruci.
And then, given the power vacuum in the territory, it would have been the criminal group led by Mimmo Cracolici (class of '71), already hegemonic in the territory of Cortale and Maida and closely linked to the Cracolici of Filogaso and Maierato, to "take" the area between Lamezia Terme and Filadelfia, collecting in some way the "criminal legacy", with the recognition from the neighboring gangs of the Lamezia Terme, Catanzaro and, indeed, Vibo Valentia areas.

Old Ties with the Anello-Fruci
In the investigation later renamed “Artemis”, the investigators of the Catanzaro Anti-Mafia District have thus reconstructed the activities carried out by Mimmo Cracolici, starting from drug dealing to logging, up to a capillary control of the territory in full compliance with the 'ndrangheta logic of dividing up economic business, without neglecting the intimidating force, also counting on the subjugation and silence of the victims. The boss of Cortale – during the investigation – has repeatedly manifested the ties, even deep ones, with the leaders of the Anello-Fruci gang of Filadelfia, in particular with Vincenzino Fruci and Rocco Anello (class of '61), currently detained. But not only that: the investigators have also shed light on a cross-section of the "mafia management" of the territory of Cortale, Maida and Jacurso that Mimmo Cracolici exercises not only thanks to his blood ties with the homonymous family from Vibo Valentia, but above all to the teachings received from masters of the caliber of the Fruci brothers and the boss Rocco Anello himself.

Cars on behalf of Enzo Fruci
The wiretaps carried out by the pg on behalf of the Catanzaro Dda, have returned numerous confirmations regarding the very close relationship between Mimmo Cracolici and, in particular, Vincenzino Fruci, "going so far as to say, during one of the many conversations intercepted with the "partners" of Rosarno, that he actually grew up with them", the investigators note. Some time ago, for example, Cracolici allegedly gave Fruci two cars, a Mitsubishi Pajero and a Mini Cooper "so that he could try to sell them" the investigators note, but without success because, on July 21, 2020, he was arrested precisely as part of the Imponimento operation. A topic that returned to the fore in April 2022 during a conversation intercepted between Mimmo Cracolici and Domenico Berlingeri known as “Mimmo lo Zingaro” «who had brought to the site, with a tow truck, a Mini Cooper taken from Vincenzino Fruci’s wife», the investigators still note. In that same conversation, Berlingeri «in addition to being interested in purchasing a batch of marijuana», allegedly told Mimmo Cracolici that he wanted to get spare parts from that vehicle. Different story, however, for the Mitsubishi: Mimmo Cracolici, in fact, specified to his brother-in-law that he had taken it back from Vincenzino Fruci’s wife and had it repaired. And, even though he had left it to Fruci, the car was still registered in his name and, since he had not been paid for it in full, «he had preferred to take it back» also because «he had heard rumors about the latter’s possible collaboration with justice», the investigators still write.

Drug deals and decades of knowledge
"No, I grew up with them! With Pino and Vincenzo!" . This is how Mimmo Cracolici explained to Luigi Cutrì from Rosarnese his long-standing acquaintance with Fruci, also saying that he had "relationships with the two bosses of Acconia di Curinga, before their arrest in July 2020, for a consolidated drug trafficking", the investigators write. The relationships between Vincenzino Fruci and the people from Rosarnese were also dated, to the point of having taken two cars (a KIA and a Sorrento) "as a guarantee of payment for the goods, vehicles still in their possession", writes the prosecutor. "(...) three years ago when did we do all that? Damn the money... he brought us the money in bags, in envelopes you could say...". This is how Giuseppe Saffioti reported that he had known Vincenzi Fruci for at least ten years and that he and his group had sold him large quantities of narcotics.

Rocco Anello still commands
Another element that – according to the prosecution – would certify the consolidated relationship between Mimmo Cracolici and the Anello-Fruci is a particular anecdote that the boss tells Cortale, inside the “Catalano” bar of Francesco Catalano (class of '64) also among those arrested, with whom Mimmo would have entertained himself to discuss his judicial affairs and the trials in which he is currently accused.
It is the evening of June 7, 2023 and Mimmo Cracolici confides to the bartender that he met, at midday, some individuals to whom he would deliver an 'embassy.
(...) what can I say to him other than no to the guy in jail? He's still in charge, damn it... I got the embassy from Rocco... believe me, look, this is really the boss of bosses! There's no point in someone getting too high and doing...», Cracolici himself tells Catalano. The message to “not get carried away” was meant to be delivered to some individuals engaged in unspecified work, citing Rocco Anello himself who, despite his detention, still seems capable of “commanding” the territory.

Ielapi's disrespect
On this same occasion, Mimmo Cracolici tells Catalano another episode, with which he intended to convey the idea of ??the power and authority exercised by Rocco Anello. Apparently, in fact, the boss had «tasked him with organizing a meeting with Sandro Ielapi» the investigators report, to whom however there would have been «an unidentified individual indicated with the name of “Checco” and who had passed himself off as Ielapi» we read further, «without knowing that Rocco Anello knew Sandro perfectly». In fact, a lack of respect that had sent the boss into a rage: «(…) look, I had to kill him, I had killed the wrong person». Cracolici's story continues, still reporting to Catalano that he had personally witnessed the anger of Rocco Anello who, once confronted with Ielapi, would have reprimanded him in front of the wife of this “Giovanni the boss”. «Damn, how he ground him down in front of his wife, you know what he did to him! The investigation, which began in 2022, allowed us to reconstruct the criminal dynamics surrounding the gang active in Sinopoli, Cosoleto and San Procopio and the first "locale" active in Rome, Anzio and Nettuno, which operated in the capital after having obtained official investiture from the parent company in Calabria.

Monopolistic management
The Court of Cassation – as stated in the brief – affirmed the principle of law according to which the crime under art. 416 bis can be configured with reference to a new territorial articulation of the 'ndrangheta if, among other things, the premises «carry out a penetrating action intended to “occupy” market and production areas, polluting the related social fabric ». In reference to the ruling of November 2022, with which the order of the Review Court relating to the position of Vincenzo Alvaro was confirmed, the Court noted that the peculiarity of the 'ndrangheta premises in Rome lies in the fact that «the objective was not and is not that of the physical or moral oppression of those who came into contact with the various characters of the premises, but on the contrary, that of allowing the appropriation of economic sectors that effectively excluded a physiological free market to the full advantage of a “monopolistic” type of management, albeit sectoral . The settlement model of the historical association of reference – the judges noted – adapts, therefore, to the new social and economic reality of reference, thus being enriched with a further content, equally invasive and pervasive».

Fictitious headings and capital invested to alter the legal economy
The Roman prosecutors, repeating the words of the Court of Cassation that ruled in the context of the preliminary hearing, and the considerations of the preliminary hearing judge, highlighted how the Calabrian clans in the Capital were able to expand their influence "when the corporate purpose (or statutory purpose) - to use the preliminary hearing judge's words - of the organization was the infiltration of the economic fabric of the capital through fictitiously registered companies or firms in which illicit capital was invested".

VIBO VALENTIA The family bond and the archaic associative ties, pillars that have allowed the 'ndrangheta not to be "scratched" for decades by the numerous operations. Clans based on entire families with the criminal legacy that is passed down from father to sons raised on bread and 'ndrangheta. It is mainly thanks to these two factors that in its ten-year history the Calabrian organized crime has had few repentants . An aspect that has guaranteed its growth and its credibility especially abroad. "The 'ndrine are considered credible for their toughness and because over the years, compared to the number of 'ndranghetists, it has left behind very few collaborators of justice" explained the prosecutor Nicola Gratteri in an interview a few months ago. A context that makes the case of the 'ndrangheta in the province of Vibo Valentia even more emblematic, in the opposite sense: in the last 10 years a real "boom" of collaborators of justice , the latest being the Bonavota killer Francesco Fortuna. A prominent figure who joins the many others on whose statements the numerous investigations and hundreds of arrests have in fact been "shaped".

The regrets of Moscato and Mantella
The first strong “shock” of the earthquake that would soon shake the 'ndrangheta of Vibo Valentia was the repentance of Raffaele Moscato in 2015. At the top of the Piscopisani, his statements would lead to the disarticulation of the club rooted in the Vibo Valentia district, also shedding light on several murders and on the feud against the Mancuso-Patania. Moscato spoke of the intentions of the 'ndrina of Piscopio to “replace” the most powerful family of Limbadi. The same intentions that Andrea Mantella had set himself, with his group from Vibo Valentia , before deciding to take the plunge in 2016. The first Mancuso to repent
Even more emblematic and historic is the repentance of Emanuele Mancuso, former scion of the Limbadi clan of the same name, which occurred in the summer of 2018. A particularly hot summer, that of 2021, and the risk of a criminal escalation that could have ended with a murder. It is 2021 and the investigators intercept a series of conversations that see among the protagonists Pasquale Conidi (class of '55) and some individuals who, according to the Anti-Mafia District of Florence, would be part of a criminal group dedicated to cocaine trafficking between Calabria and the Tuscan capital. Conidi ended up in handcuffs in the operation, conducted by the Carabinieri of the Investigative Unit of Florence , together with Giuseppe Foti, Antonio Callipari and Marco Trimarchi. Carmela Greco, Stefano Diversi and Fabio Cugliari ended up under house arrest.

The scorching summer of 2021
During the investigation phase, however, the investigators come across a heated dispute involving Conidi's partner, Giuseppe Foti. The slap of discord
The picture was still unclear when investigators learned of Conidi's intentions to return to Florence shortly after Ferragosto. But, in the meantime, there was still a matter to be resolved. "I'll bring you the bread... the suppressant..." Conidi said in a phone call to his partner Diversi from Tosano, while he told another partner from Calabria that he needed to meet him because "there's a good business deal for you... with the salami... with the cheeses that you work with...". In reality, Conidi wanted to meet his fellow countryman to find - as investigators would soon ascertain - some firearms to avenge an affront suffered by his friend and partner Giuseppe Foti. Apparently, in fact, Foti had slapped a certain "son of Maisano", fearing, as a consequence, an immediate reprisal from him . The discussion is addressed by Conidi while he is arguing with his brother, to whom he also says that he has already taken steps to obtain firearms through his friend from Mileto.
«Peppone had an argument… now… this afternoon a friend of mine is coming… from Mileto… maybe he has… because this guy has gotten too big for his boots… and Peppe did the right thing! He gave him a “moscata” (…) I told him “cousin, in the end, what do they have… we’ll find the pistols… we’ve got the rifles!”.
The conversation between the brothers, however, takes on worrying overtones since Pasquale Conidi says he is ready to carry out an ambush. «(…) at this point we’ll just shoot him! (…) the mess he’s made… we’ll ring the bell “come down for a minute”…». And again: «There’s a war! Now let’s see how it ends… if someone dies, he dies! Tomorrow, if anything… let’s do it tomorrow…».


"I'll do this idiot in the square"
Later that evening, Pasquale Conidi tells a certain “Giovanni” «of the provocation suffered by Foti di Saverio Maisano», the investigating judge reports in the order, inside a barber shop, and of his intention to avenge him. «(…) I was really pissed off… I had firefights with the car… with the armored vehicles… imagine if I think about this idiot, I do it in the square… this idiot didn't understand a damn thing, that's not the problem…». And, at a certain point, Conidi raises some doubts: «if he left without having any reason… there's something behind it… it doesn't hold up Giova'… you understand that it doesn't hold up… it's premeditated, or don't you agree?». According to Conidi – as confirmed by the wiretaps – the existing friction between Foti and Maisano «derived from the hegemony that both wanted to have over drug trafficking», the investigating judge reports in the order, also citing a certain “Cola” who, for the investigators, is none other than Nicola Bartolotta, father-in-law of Saverio Maisano and «historical head of one of the 'ndrangheta structures operating in Stefanaconi», the investigating judge also notes in the order.

The weapon ready and the arrest
On August 14, Conidi receives the expected phone call from Mileto's friend, whom he reaches shortly thereafter. During the meeting, as the investigating judge notes in the order, Conidi "looks at two pistols, including a .357, stating that the latter was his "personal" weapon", weapons that Mileto's friend wants to sell him for 4 thousand euros. The two, therefore, agree to buy a single pistol that Conidi hides inside a sort of secret compartment in his car. The man, however, is stopped shortly thereafter in Sant'Onofrio. The car is searched and the officers manage to locate the secret compartment inside which they find a 7.65 cal. pistol with the serial number erased and 20 bullets, with the subsequent arrest of Conidi.
