TURIN There is a decisive element that would have provided further proof of the presence of a "strong 'ndrangheta association" active in the territory of Carmagnola and with an indissoluble bond with Calabria. The radars are all directed to Sant'Onofrio, historical stronghold of the Bonavota clan and lead to the fugitive of a highly wanted man: Pasquale Bonavota.

The fugitive status and capture of Bonavota
The former red primrose and clan leader designated by descent from the clan of the same name, in fact, was arrested on April 27, 2023 in Genoa, then sentenced to 28 years in prison, at the end of the "Rinascita-Scott" trial held in the bunker courtroom of Lamezia Terme. As reconstructed by the investigators of the Turin Anti-Mafia District, Pasquale Bonavota during his time on the run would have "enjoyed the support of the Piedmontese association through the conduct of Domenico Ceravolo, Antonio Serratore, Rocco Costa and Francesco D'Onofrio, who operated at least in agreement with Onofrio Garcea, historic head of the 'ndrangheta articulation of Genoa, in turn connected to the Sant'Onofrio club". This is what the investigators wrote in the arrest warrant issued against 6 individuals.


The identity card and fibrillation
On the occasion of his arrest in the Ligurian capital last year, during the search the Carabinieri found a copy of Domenico Ceravolo's identity card. The investigations, also coordinated with the Genoa DDA, would have therefore allowed them to demonstrate how Ceravolo, Serratore, D'Onofrio and Costa collaborated in guaranteeing such protection, and did so because of their membership in the 'ndrangheta , and in particular in the Carmagnola branch. Immediately after the arrest of Pasquale Bonavota, the judicial police - as can be read in the arrest - recorded an initial phase of fibrillation among the suspects. There is in particular a restaurateur, in the past linked to Bonavota, who, having heard the news, contacts Ceravolo and, alarmed, says: «Come by, it's important! Come by, it's really important!» and, in fact, the meeting will be held on the afternoon of April 30, 2023. There is, then, another important detail that emerged immediately after the arrest of the fugitive: during the search of the house where Bonavota was hiding, "photocopies of the identity card and health card of a subject whose cousin was a friend of Pasquale D'Onofrio's partner were also found" the investigators note. This subject, according to the note of the pg, would have rented a house in Genoa through the husband of a tenant, the same one who would have been contacted on more than one occasion by Pasquale Bonavota, so much so that in his cell phone the contact had been saved as " Sign. Affitti Centro".


“CAM” Lock
Antonio Serratore would also be involved in the activities supporting Pasquale Bonavota's time as a fugitive . As emerged from the investigation and the documents of the Genoa DDA, in fact, the man "would have hosted, in the month of November 2022, inside his home in La Loggia, Vincenzo Bonavota, son of Nicola, before he went to Genoa to meet his fugitive uncle". But not only that: thanks to the in-depth analysis made possible by the analysis of the forensic copy of the contents of the devices seized from the fugitive, it was possible to ascertain how "Serratore financed the time as a fugitive itself" the investigators note in the arrest.
From the analysis of the Nokia in use by Pasquale Bonavota "it emerged that the latter was in contact with a subject who lived in Turin, near Moncalieri" registered as "CAM" in the address book. The contacts took place with messages - the investigators note in the arrest - in which Pasquale Bonavota addressed to "CAM" various requests such as "good oil" , "black rs 500 adult short socks" "3 packs of Riopan" and mentioned "a certain "bricklayer" who would have gone to Genoa and to whom "CAM" could have delivered such goods" we read further. Therefore, always according to the investigators, considering the evidence collected it is actually possible to establish who "CAM" is. "Not so much and not only because, as the Pg reports, the acronym refers to "Compare Antonio Moncalieri", and therefore to Serratore who is called Antonio and lives in La Loggia, a municipality bordering Moncalieri, but above all because "the story shows how it was he who sent money to the fugitive and hosted a relative of his in La Loggia and then put him in contact with the fugitive himself", we read further in the arrest.

Payments for “Lopreiato”
But that's not all. The active role of Antonio Serratore as "an exponent of the Carmagnola gang in the management of the fugitive" was documented "unequivocally", since he allegedly financed the fugitive in 2021. In fact, the suspect allegedly "transferred money through the company "Ria Italia" for an amount of 600 euros on 04/10/2021 to a certain Francesco Lopreiato. A month later, on 3/11/2021, a further transfer of money occurred to the same Lopreiato for an amount of 640 euros" can still be read in the arrest warrant. Regarding the two operations, the investigators then acquired the identity documents of the subjects involved in the transactions, highlighting that in both circumstances "the beneficiary Francesco Lopreiato actually identified himself as Pasquale Bonavota". MILAN There is a specific chapter in the investigation that the Milan DDA has conducted against the ultra leaders and their groups in the Inter and Milan stands at San Siro and it is dedicated to the management of the parking lots around the stadium. It is from here that, like an ideal path, the accusation goes back to some key figures capable of breaking down elements on which, up to now, no light has been shed, leaving something in the shadows. According to the accusation, substantially in the hands of Giuseppe Caminiti, born in '69 in Gioia Tauro, and Gherardo Zaccagni (born in '71), the first ended up in prison while the investigating judge has ordered house arrest for the second. On the sidelines the investigators identify the figures of Beretta and Boiocchi , the latter killed two years ago while the former was already in prison for the murder, which occurred a month ago, of the scion of the Bellocco 'ndrangheta family, Antonio.

“The Doctor”
In this apparently linear scenario, a figure of absolute importance and widely known to investigators comes into play. It is Giuseppe Calabrò , who for decades has been involved in the circles of the Milanese underworld linked to the Calabrian 'ndrangheta. “'U Dutturicchiu”, in fact, boasts family ties with various exponents of some 'ndrine in the province of Reggio.
The prosecution considers the '50-born man from San Luca to be «an internal subject to the 'ndrina of the “Staccu” of San Luca represented by the “Avvocaticchiu” Antonio Romeo (class of '54) husband of the sister of Giuseppe Calabrò, son of the founder of the 'ndrina “Staccu”. His family ties, direct and indirect, lead him back to more or less known subjects of the Calabrian 'ndrangheta in Locride, from San Luca to Africo and Platì, from the Pelle-Gambazza to the Mollica-Morabito.
“'U Dutturicchiu”, to date, has no convictions for mafia-type association but has previous convictions for “association for the purpose of drug trafficking” and “drug trafficking”. And, above all, Giuseppe Calabrò is on trial in the Assize Court in Como in the new trial on the kidnapping and murder of Cristina Mazzotti which took place in the summer of 1975. He is accused of “having actively participated in the kidnapping together with Antonio Romeo, Demetrio Latella and Antonio Talia, with the agreement that Calabrò would later contact them”.

The ten-year relationship with Caminiti
The investigative activity carried out against him by the Milan DDA would have allowed, therefore, to identify, in December 2019, contacts with fellow countryman Giuseppe Caminiti . But, the prosecutors underline, «their relationships began between the end of the 80s and the beginning of the 90s, when the young Caminiti took his first steps within the criminal organization directed by his uncle Salvatore Papandrea» it says. «(…) '88 I was 18 years old… yes, yes, but I was already with him eh!… I was already with him…». According to the investigators, Caminiti «is therefore a character with a significant criminal past».
Thanks to his uncle - always according to the prosecution - the young Caminiti "would have gotten closer to Giuseppe Calabrò with whom the Sanlucota had close relations", a bond that would have allowed him over the years a certain respectability and protection "to protect his economic interests, in particular those deriving from the management of the parking lots of the "San Siro" stadium in Milan", the prosecutors note.
"(...) he is my buddy... the one who knows me as a child who is the one who told me 'anyone comes to tell you something about the stadium, you do nothing but say 'I am so and so' and then I take care of everything' ...". This is what Caminiti was saying in a wiretap captured by the police in 2020.

The ice cream shop on fire
Caminiti also tells some acquaintances about some actions he allegedly took part in. «(…) there was an ice cream shop… my uncle starts to renovate… “why don’t we buy the ice cream shop, make a tobacconist’s, move the tobacconist’s here, take it over there”» «(…) “go talk… go talk” … there was no way!» and «the lady says to me “I’m sorry… I don’t sell, I don’t sell to anyone”». Caminiti’s story continues: «(…) I went there, there’s a gas station in front of the bar… I took a can of gasoline… I arrive with this can and I said “I’m coming”… I arrive with the can, I take it, I go inside the ice cream shop… I put the can on the ground, I pull down the shutters… “so there are two things: either you sell and sign the compromise here now or I start throwing gasoline with you inside”». According to the DDA, the episode had a precise confirmation and dates back to October 9, 1989 with the intervention of the Fire Brigade in Milan at an ice cream shop, "then effectively sold to Salvatore Papandrea", it is written.

The Bentley and the gun chase
Caminiti's stories do not stop and, in the same conversation, he reports another episode committed against a gas station attendant to whom he himself had taken his Bentley to be washed . According to Caminiti, at his request, the gas station attendant made himself unavailable due to the late hour – it was 5:30 or 6 pm. «(…) I said “will you wash my car?” “Damn Pino… it's six o'clock! No, I'm not washing it for you today” “How come you don't wash it! Wash my car!” “No, no, I can't… today… it's six o'clock, come earlier…” and I said “OK, no problem…”». Caminiti would have seen the refusal as an affront and, for this reason, he went to the gas station during the night and set fire to some structures there. «(…) the shed and everything… and we set fire to the gas station…», Caminiti himself says in the conversation. Another story given by Caminiti during the conversation intercepted by the prosecutor is linked to another "emblematic" episode according to the Milan DDA and dating back, again, to a few years ago. A friend of his, as a joke, pretended to run him over while he was with other individuals. For this same admission, Caminiti says that he was armed and that "he started chasing the man on board his Lancia Delta HF Integrale, firing several gunshots" the prosecutors note. "(...) I got into the car... I swear, like in a movie, American stuff... and while I was driving, I swear, from the window pom, pom, pom... he stopped, flashed his hazard lights, got out: "Pino, it's me! VIBO VALENTIA «I don't come from a rich family, my father was a Telecom employee and my mother was a housewife. We moved to Pizzo from Catanzaro because of my father's job when I was about 5 years old. Around 14 I started hanging out with guys with whom I committed petty crimes, thefts of bicycles, scooters, damage and other types of minor crimes». «At the time, my friends and I recognized the figure of Manco, he was a charismatic individual who, on behalf of the Mancusos, commanded Pizzo, Pizzo Marina and "the national team" and we, in exchange for 5 or 10 thousand lire, played pranks on people». This is the story of Renato Marziano, born in Vibo Valentia in 1967, a collaborator of justice whose name is present in the conclusion of the investigations of the "Portosalvo" inquiry of the Catanzaro District Anti-Mafia.

The interrogation

Meetings in the juvenile prison
Renato Marziano 's story continues by illustrating further details. The collaborator of justice, in an ideal path, therefore reconstructs the "genesis" of organized crime in Vibo Valentia, citing names and characters whose specific weight will be measured in the years to come. "Once arrested and entered the juvenile prison, my real criminal career began . "After a period of imprisonment, from 15 to 18, at around 18 and a half I was placed under house arrest, with permission to go to work at a body shop located on the Pizzo national road," Marziano continues. "Here," he explains, "I met Gaetano Comito with whom I became very good friends and who I also started to hang out with in the evenings; I remember that I even gave him a giant Great Dane. This Comito, at a certain point, opened a shop selling scales, slicers, refrigerated counters and other things and we began to commit a series of scams together, consisting of ordering goods that we then paid for with stolen checks, or with checks without cover." "I was in charge of placing the orders," the informer said, "and once the goods arrived, he couldn't be found and I, with checkbooks that he procured for me, signed these uncovered securities in his place, on which I indicated fictitious names." The Netherlands is one of the most contaminated countries by the Calabrian 'ndrangheta, due to its strategic location as a transit port for drugs and its investment climate. This is what former mafia leader Luigi Bonaventura says in an exclusive interview in the program Criminal Circles on NPO Radio 1.

“All in all, the Netherlands is a good territory for business, for investments. There are many opportunities. It is one of the most contaminated countries. My top three would be: Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands,” says Luigi Bonaventura. Until 2007, he led some 200 mafiosi in southern Italy for the 'ndrangheta. After that, he became a confessor and key witness in dozens of anti-mafia cases. His testimonies contribute to the arrest and/or conviction of at least 500 criminals.

The port of Rotterdam is of strategic importance. As a mafia boss, Bonaventura led criminals who organised the drug route through the Netherlands for him. “I want to emphasise that no one can have cocaine arrive in containers in Rotterdam without local contacts. That is impossible. You can only do something like that if you have confidants, who sometimes belong to multiple organisations and who make the arrival, unloading and sorting of the product possible.”

“When you talk about the ‘ndrangheta in Europe, the most important country is Germany, which we can now call its second homeland. We also have to take their presence in Eastern Europe very seriously,” Bonaventura believes.

The mouth of a shark
“The 'ndrangheta is like a shark’s mouth. You have the first row, the most important, then comes the slightly less important, the younger ones, ready to replace them if people are arrested or killed,” says Bonaventura.


Operation Pollino
In the large-scale police operation on 5 December last year, which exposed a European network of the 'ndrangheta, a total of ninety people were arrested, including five in the Netherlands. Three million euros in cash, 140 kilos of ecstasy pills and four thousand kilos of cocaine were seized during the raids.

Bonaventura does not want to deny the importance of the action, but says 'that this is only the tip of the iceberg'. He returns to his comparison with the shark's mouth. " The canals have not been destroyed by this. A route has been disrupted by the action, with some people being caught and others escaping. Slowly, when the dust has settled, the 'ndrangheta will rebuild the collapsed bridges. It would be wrong to think that the 'ndrangheta has been destroyed by this."

Less blood on the streets
“The fact that there is little bloodshed in Europe by the mafias, we know the motive very well. It is in their interest to keep the eyes of the people closed. For the sake of business, they make peace with each other, so that no alarm is raised and people do not take their presence and power seriously, so that measures or laws are implemented in Europe. They are careful, because they do not want to violate their interests and do not want to provoke strict laws in those countries,” says Bonaventura.

“With money you can also influence people who are in the way. That way you can solve the problem differently, with less noise,” Bonaventura emphasizes. And money has the 'ndrangheta. An estimate from a few years ago shows a turnover of 53 billion euros per year. For comparison: that is more than McDonald's and Coca Cola combined.

Multinational of the underworld
“When you consider that the 'ndrangheta is involved in much more than just drugs, such as money laundering, weapons, different types of waste disposal, also toxic and radioactive, with all kinds of companies and sectors, then you can get an idea of ??what kind of multinational of the underworld it is. A very important one.”

“ I also think that they also make people who are not corrupted or convinced disappear in other ways, ways that we cannot always see. I am very convinced that many suicides, many traffic accidents, many cases of overdoses, or people who hang themselves - I am convinced that a large part of that is also the work of the mafias.”

Who is Luigi Bonaventura?
Luigi Bonaventura grew up in an old 'ndrangheta family, in the town of Crotone, in the toe of Italy. His father and grandfather led a mafia organization before him.

Early in 2007, Bonaventura decided to cooperate with the Italian justice system. He confessed to his own crimes. His testimonies earned him a substantial reduction in sentence. He wanted, in his own words, to 'break the umbilical cord that connected his children to the mafia.' “ I wanted to give them real power, and by that I mean freedom. Freedom not to belong to the ndrangheta and the circumstances that come with it. I wanted them to belong to civilized society.”

'Leadership of 200 mafiosi'
“My role was leadership, I was the head of my family since 2001, when I took over from my uncle, who until then was the absolute capo of my family. This phase lasted only a few years, after which I started working with the justice system. I started as the right-hand man of the leader of the military branch, then I became the leader of that branch myself, and then I also made the leap to the branch that deals with politics and business. I had to decide on trade and on assassinations. I had 200 men under me.”

“My collaboration with the justice system began in 2007, after about a year of thinking about that step. I had contacted people from the institutions through various channels to find out how it would go. In February 2007, I told my story to the public prosecutor Pierpaolo Bruni of the DDA of Catanzaro. From that moment on, a long series of increasing collaborations with various public prosecutors began, now 13, including a foreign one. I decided to become a regretter for my children, because I did not want to take away their future.”

Phishing, ransomware, fraud
Messages inviting people to click on fake links, emails designed to defraud consumers, unmissable offers at rock-bottom prices proposed by unknown hackers hunting for easy prey. These are some examples of online fraud , phishing and ransomware that in over 40% of cases «come from sources outside of Italy». It is easy to imagine how mafia organizations have begun to consider cybercrime as an easily accessible source of income, «which requires a modest investment in exchange for potentially high earnings».

The Cybercriminal
Nighttime is the best time to carry out the heists. The cybercriminal acts when it is dark and when the victims are far from their computer devices . «More and more frequently, the ransom requested is in bitcoins, which are purchased on sales platforms, transferred to an electronic wallet and sent to an address provided by the extortionist (a 27-character alphanumeric code). From there, the virtual currencies are “unpacked” and made to disappear in tax havens such as Hong Kong, Singapore or the very popular Seychelles and Maldives ». «Only when the bitcoin is transformed into real money is there a remote possibility of identifying the extortionist, but then one has to deal with offshore countries, which rarely cooperate with the judicial authorities».

Data in Calabria
The numbers contained in the Libera report and which concern Calabria are alarming. As regards « computer scams and frauds, 7,291 crimes were recorded in 2023, with an increase of 6.7% compared to 2022 ». The province of Cosenza recorded the highest number of crimes related to computer scams and frauds , « with 2,343 cases, followed by the province of Reggio Calabria with 2,231 and Catanzaro with 2,231. In percentage terms, the province of Vibo Valentia is the one that recorded the highest increase in crimes compared to 2022, with an increase of 14% ».
On the other hand, the number of crimes related to computer crimes is decreasing: in Calabria, in 2023, 628 crimes were recorded, compared to 795 in 2022.

The 'ndrangheta is not looking for hitmen but engineers
During a recent visit to Calabria, in Cosenza, Prefect Vittorio Rizzi (an investigator with great experience, with a professional background in the world of security) focused on the ability of mafias to adapt and exploit new technologies. " The real recipe is to respond to a global criminal phenomenon with a global alliance (...) the most effective means exist but we must always be one step ahead of those who use them illegally." The challenge is arduous, not only for those who suffer cyber attacks and end up in the hackers' network but also for those who are engaged daily in activities to combat criminals.
The prosecutor of Naples, Nicola Gratteri , recently had the opportunity to reveal a particular detail linked to the illegal action committed by a Calabrian clan. " A 'ndrangheta family hired German and Romanian hackers to make financial transactions in the space of 20 minutes in banks located on 3 different continents ."
The national anti-mafia and anti-terrorism prosecutor Giovanni Melillo , interviewed by Corriere della Sera , recalls how « computer consultants and engineers are now among the most valuable resources of criminal organizations too » and how «virtual space has become the fundamental organizational cornerstone of the most dangerous forms of organized crime. Victims, kidnappings, turnover, clan rankings: the 2024 annual report of the Central Directorate for Anti-Drug Services is a journey into every criminal nook and cranny of the drug world in Italy. After marijuana, the most consumed narcotic substance is cocaine. In 2023, drug trafficking "constituted one of the main businesses for all the criminal organizations involved, including the Italian ones" within which, the report of the Central Anti-Drug Directorate underlines, "the hegemonic role of the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta, which represents the most insidious and pervasive Italian mafia organization, has been further strengthened".

Furthermore, the report adds, the 'Ndrangheta represents "one of the most powerful and dangerous criminal organizations in the world, characterized by a pronounced tendency to expand on a national and international scale. Thanks to the presence of its own representatives and brokers operating in the production sites and temporary drug storage areas located in Europe, it is the most influential criminal organization in the trafficking of cocaine from South America". The availability of large amounts of illicit capital and a strong ability to manage the various segments and hubs of cocaine production and distribution have allowed, over time, the 'Ndrangheta to consolidate its pre-eminence in international drug trafficking, which all other criminal networks refer to for the supply of cocaine for consumption in their respective areas. "As for Cosa Nostra - we read further in the Report of the Central Anti-Drug Directorate - the investigations have confirmed its persistent vitality. The Neapolitan Camorra - adds the report - has also continued its activity of importing narcotics, especially hashish and cocaine, exploiting on the one hand its operational projections in Spain and in the countries of South America, in Africa and in the Arabian Peninsula, on the other hand the close collaboration with the Calabrian clans. The most recent investigations have revealed agreements and alliances with both South American and Dutch traffickers of Moroccan origin active in the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp Belgium. In the world of drugs, international criminal gangs are also active, characterized by a strong ethnic aggregation, as well as tribal associative ties. The most dangerous are the Albanian mafia and the Nigerian mafia, the latter present in particular in Lombardy, Veneto, Piedmont, Emilia Romagna, Lazio, Umbria, Campania and Sicily.


Tons of cocaine
Overall, 88 tons of drugs were seized in Italy last year, with a growth of 16.61% compared to 2022. In particular, seizures of hashish (+81.99%), marijuana (+21.81%) and synthetic drugs (both in doses and powder) increased, while those of cocaine (-24.59%), heroin (-52.67%) and cannabis plants (-25.14%) decreased. Paradoxically, the data relating to the drop in seizures of cocaine and heroin is alarming, a decrease which corresponds to the surge in synthetic drugs, such as Fentanyl, Ecstasy, Ketamine which are invading the world. A recrudescence that is marking a turning point destined to worsen the social and health consequences of drug trafficking. A turning point further dominated by the 'Ndrangheta.


Cocaine and synthetic drugs on the rise
Illegal cocaine trafficking is the most worrying due to the dangerousness and pervasiveness of the criminal organizations involved, although the illicit trade in cannabis and its derivatives knows no setbacks, being the most consumed drug in the world. And if heroin trafficking appears to be in decline, synthetic drugs are increasingly imposing themselves on the criminal scene thanks to more accessible sales channels such as the web. Italy, from this last point of view, has a less worrying situation, continuing to be a country that still predominantly consumes narcotic substances of natural origin. The data also highlight the indirect damage caused by drug trafficking, with the increase in episodes of violence and aggression connected to the consumption of narcotics, even synthetic ones, with the most powerful psychoactive effects. Furthermore, the cultivation of natural drugs in increasingly large territorial areas, through the exploitation of the soil, deforestation and pollution, seriously compromises the environment and, consequently, the health of the planet.

The Guardia di Finanza has dismantled an organization financed by people also linked to the Grande Aracris

REGGIO EMILIA – The proceeds of organized crime , then laundered thanks to false invoices issued by companies based in Emilia, to finance the organization dedicated to usury, extortion and money laundering, which had its hands on some of the most popular clubs in Bologna 's nightlife . Last Wednesday, the Guardia di Finanza arrested two people, while 14 others are under investigation. At the center of the investigation is the figure of Omar Mohamed, 39, born in Crotone and believed to be close to members of the Grande Aracri clan and the Arena-Nicosia 'ndrina , from whom he allegedly received significant sums of money then used in his activities; but the proceeds of the Camorra also arrived in the organization's pockets, through the acquaintances of the other arrested person, Massimo Nicotera, a 50-year-old from Naples , already convicted of mafia-style association with the Veneruso-Rea clan .
