REGGIO CALABRIA The appeal trial of the abbreviated strand arising from the investigation by the Reggio Calabria DDA “New Generation-Riscatto II” against the young members of the Cordì clan in Locri will begin on Wednesday 16 October. Twenty years each for Riccardo Francesco Cordì, Luca Scaramuzzino, Antonio Aversa and Salvatore Congiusta were the heaviest sentences handed down in the first instance at the end of the closing speech by deputy prosecutors Giovanni Calamita and Diego Capece Minutolo, who requested over 250 years in prison.

The investigation
Operation “New Generation-Riscatto II”, which began in July 2022, led to the arrest of 29 people accused, to varying degrees, of mafia-style criminal association, illicit production, trafficking and possession of narcotics, possession of weapons and ammunition, damage, aggravated extortion, trafficking and dealing in counterfeit banknotes. “The point of reference for all the other associates”, the very young Riccardo Francesco Cordì and Luca Scaramuzzino, born in 1996 and 1993 respectively, are those who, according to investigators, “stood out for their authority and operational ability” within the group. The aim, according to what emerged from the investigations, of the clan was twofold: to control, through the young group, the activities carried out on its territory and, at the same time, «to train young people subjected to the criminal authority of the Cordì family from whom they could draw in the future to strengthen the specific organizational chart of the gang» so much so that «even externally the group of boys is considered an offshoot of the Cordì gang». Among them a bond so close as to consider «the principle of mutual aid between the associates absolutely obligatory». ( mr )
