Horror ‘Swarm of drones’: 4 soldiers killed 7 severely injured at an Israeli military camp in Binyamina, northern Israel and 67 others injured, in Hezbollah drone strike
The attack on Sunday took place near the town of Binyamina, south of Haifa
According to Israel’s Channel 12, no warning sirens were heard before the attack
Reporting from Amman, Jordan, Al Jazeera’s Nour Odeh said that though the Israeli air defence system is very sophisticated and multi-layered, drones are hard to detect.
“Usually, the sirens go off when something is heading towards a location so civilians and residents of that area are told to seek shelter. That’s why there have been a very small number of injuries throughout the past year from those attacks,” she said.
“But the drones are harder to detect, and because they fly at lower altitudes, they are much more difficult to intercept. Effectively intercepting them would put a lot of people in danger,” Odeh said.
At the direction of US President Joe Biden, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin “authorised the deployment of a Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery and associated crew of US military personnel to Israel to help bolster Israel’s air defenses following Iran’s unprecedented attacks against Israel on April 13 and again on October 1”, Pentagon press secretary Pat Ryder said in a statement.
The Hezbollah drone strike comes on the same day that the United States announced it would send a new air-defence system (THAAD) to Israel to help bolster its protection against missile attacks.
The Hezbollah attack in Binyamina shows that attacking Lebanon carries a heavy price for Israelis too, according to Gideon Levy, Israeli political analyst.
“Nothing less was expected. We are at the beginning of the war in Lebanon, not at the end of it. And everyone so enthusiastic about this war should know that it will carry a very heavy price,” he told Al Jazeera.
Israel is embroiled in conflicts on numerous fronts — against, 1. Hamas in Gaza 2. the militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon 3. a new crop of Palestinian militants in the West Bank 4. the Iranian-allied Houthis in Yemen 5. Iranian proxies in Syria and Iraq
and against the theocratic regime in Iran itself, which is in the crosshairs of a looming Israeli reprisal after a recent rocket barrage on the Jewish state.
Add the United Nations into the mix.
UNIFIL group: a legacy of international efforts to maintain the peace after Israeli invasions of Lebanon — has a force of some 10,000 peacekeepers of varying nationalities in bases scattered across the Israel-Lebanon border.
Israel had issued vague orders for UNIFIL to evacuate at least some of its positions, but the peacekeepers’ countries of origin collectively agreed to maintain the mission.
What Peace has UNIFIL been keeping? Now 18 years later UN the Peace Keeper!
UN Resolution 1701 prohibits all armed militias from operating anywhere in all of Lebanon and disarmament of armed groups including Hezbollah -- Yeah, Right!
1. Always antagonistic towards Israel which complied with the UN Resolution and withdrew from Lebanon 2. However when it comes to terrorists UN the toothless tiger
Between 1979 and 1985, 9,000 Dutch soldiers were in South Lebanon. Their task was to maintain peace and quiet between Israel and the PLO. More as in other peace keeping missions, except Bosnia in the 90s, many developed later in life post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
I too fail see the relevance of this UN Peace keeping!
If their task was to maintain peace and quiet between Israel and Hezbollah.... dismal failure indeed
While I appreciate this enormous and challenging task -- this UN Peace keeping didn't help / stop Israel and Hezbollah trading blows over the fence since 08 October 2023 and then escalating into the current full blown war
Now smack bang in the middle of this war, these UN Peace keepers are staying put instead of withdrawing to the side lines or getting out altogether -- hindering Israel's operations and human shielding Hezbollah -- I am baffled
Besides 18 years on, Hezbollah has not disarmed as per the UN resolution 1701 following the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah conflict, raising concerns about the effectiveness of UN resolutions aimed at disarming terror outfits

Horror ‘Swarm of drones’: The attack on Sunday took place near the town of Binyamina, south of Haifa
From: The Guardian October 14, 2024 US intervention (THAAD) points to growing concerns over Big problems with Israel’s air defences
As Israel’s conflict with Hezbollah and Iran has escalated, it has begun to show a degree of vulnerability.
A Hezbollah drone evaded Israel’s much vaunted air defences on Sunday and struck a military canteen when it was busy with soldiers eating dinner. Four were killed and 58 wounded, seven seriously, at a location 40 miles south of the Lebanese border.
The drone that hit the canteen of the Golani base near Binyamina appears to have been part of a synchronised attack that allowed it to elude the country’s well organised air defences.
Three drones flew from Lebanon over the Mediterranean, and though they were all initially spotted, and two shot down, the other was able to reach its target.
Why the third drone got away, eluding fighter jets, helicopters and the Iron Dome defence system, is a subject of urgent inquiry by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
Hezbollah has been refining its attack strategy, and timing the drone attack with rockets, helped complicate the picture for the defenders.
Drones may fly more slowly than missiles, but the Iranian-designed carbon-fibre models used by Hezbollah are hard to see and difficult for radar to pick up, a task made more complicated because they are flown deliberately low.
Manoeuvrable, this drone, said to be Sayyad 107, resisted GPS guidance jamming, possibly because it used Russian or Chinese alternatives.
It is not the first time in recent days that a drone has got through.

A retirement home in Herzliya was struck by a drone on Friday during the Yom Kippur holiday – one of two that crossed the border from Lebanon. The other was shot down successfully by a fighter jet, but the second struck the building a few miles north of Tel Aviv.
Israel’s air force said on Monday it intercepted more than 80% of incoming drones – 221 out of 1,200 that have been fired at the country during the war so far, have got through.
An increase in the number of attacks and the growing sophistication of what remain relatively cheap to produce weapons will increase the risk of Israeli casualties as the fighting continues.
However, the number of civilian and military casualties caused by Israeli attacks in Lebanon and Gaza remains far greater.
But such is the asymmetry of the conflict that repeated successful strikes on Israel will raise questions about the completeness of the country’s air defences.
Though Iran’s large-scale ballistic missile attack on Israel at the beginning of the month was of a different order of magnitude, it too appears to have been more damaging than was initially acknowledged.
It was judged at first by the number of casualties it caused – only one person, a Palestinian in the West Bank, was believed to have been killed. But the impact on buildings was greater than initially acknowledged.
Israel’s tax authority said on Sunday it had received 2,200 damage claims relating to civilian buildings following the Iranian 1 October 2024 attack, and a further 300 for vehicles and contents, taking the total damage estimate to 150m to 200m shekels (£31m to £41m).
In Hod Hasharon, north-east of Tel Aviv, more than 1,000 homes were damaged, some impacted by a shockwave from a missile that smashed into an open area nearby.
Against such a backdrop, and with Israel expected to retaliate against Iran soon, it is not surprising that the US announced it would deploy one of its seven specialised Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) systems in Israel, and a crew of nearly 100 US troops.
THAAD is designed to defend against ballistic missiles, and will line up alongside Israel’s Arrow 2 and 3 and David’s Sling long and medium range defence systems.

Extracts: Hezbollah’s attack in 2006 led to 34 days of vicious fighting with Israel that left Lebanon in ruins, with more than 1,100 people killed, much of southern Lebanon flattened and infrastructure across the country badly damaged
18 years later, clearly having learned nothing, Hezbollah would do it all over again – except that this time its gamble would prove to be far more detrimental to the group and to Lebanon as a whole
Israel has punished Hezbollah for launching a front against it on 8 October 2023 by killing most of its political and military commanders, including Hassan Nasrallah, its top leader. It has levelled the group’s headquarters
Israel has infiltrated the organisation like never before And it has emptied much of southern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut, where Hezbollah’s support base resides.
Never in the history of Hezbollah has there been this much panic among its constituencies and this much uncertainty about its future
Quote
Whether Israel will translate its tactical gains into strategic ones is unclear but what is certain is that Lebanon cannot endure under the present circumstances
Hezbollah simply cannot continue to operate outside the confines of the Lebanese state, with no oversight or accountability, answering to a foreign power and unilaterally making decisions of war and peace on behalf of all Lebanese
None of this is normal or constitutional in any functioning society. Of course, changing all this is all easier said than done
Quote
There is nothing in Hezbollah’s experience and philosophy that suggests it will ever fold or drastically change its ways
Hezbollah is closely linked to the supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and to dissociate itself from the Islamic Republic would mean suicide
Yet ironically, the path Hezbollah has chosen has brought it closer to self-destruction Hezbollah like Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, chooses to ignore basic truths
Extracts: Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei promised "no peace and no war" but the moment of choice has come A year of conflict in the Middle East has destroyed the foreign-policy approach of Iran’s supreme leader, Khamenei
Khamenei's strategy was always implausible but its collapse has led Iran to the brink of its first international war since 1988
Arash Azizi:
Quote
What I, like to call the Khamenei Doctrine—those close to him have variously dubbed it “strategic patience” or more to the point “no peace, no war”—rests on a duality that has remained constant through Khamenei’s 35 years in power
Iran refuses any public dealings with Israel, clamoring instead for the Jewish state’s destruction and surrounding it with Arab militias that seek to destroy it
Quote
Iranian officials deny the Holocaust and chant “Death to America” at events and ceremonies
And yet, at no point does Khamenei intend to get into a direct conflict with Israel or the United States—because he knows very well that such a confrontation could be fatal for his regime -- Hope so
So what is the point of holding this contradictory posture?
Khamenei is a true fanatic He forged his beliefs as a revolutionary in the 1960s when he read Sayyid Qutb and Mao Zedong but he isn’t blind or stupid Rather, he is patient and pragmatic
Khamenei appears to have accepted that his dream of destroying Israel won’t be realized in his lifetime but he remains ideologically committed to it as a long-term goal for Islamists across generations
Khamenei has declared that Israel won’t exist in 2040—a year he will see only if he lives to be more than 100 but he seeks to advance the cause to the extent he can, building the strength of Israel’s enemies and then handing off the task to his successors
US President Biden sends antimissile system THAAD and 100 US troops to Israel, deepening US Role
Extracts: The mission marks the first significant deployment of US troops to Israel since the war in Gaza began and comes just weeks before the US presidential election in which US involvement in the conflict has been a polarizing issue on the campaign trail
The United States is sending one of its most advanced missile defense systems THAAD and about 100 US troops to Israel, deepening US involvement in the escalating war in the Middle East amid US expectations of an imminent Israeli assault on Iran
US officials have been encouraging Israel to avoid targeting Iran’s nuclear, oil and gas sites out of fear that it could spark an even larger escalation that upends the global economy
The deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense missile system or THAAD is the latest indication that the United States expects the Israeli assault to be,
Quote
“so comprehensive that the Iranians will have to respond”
said Aaron David Miller, a Middle East expert who has advised multiple Republican and Democratic administrations
The THAAD deployment adds to the more than 50,000 tons of armaments and military equipment the United States has sent Israel since the start of the war last October, according to Israel’s Defense Ministry

Extracts: The Iranian assault, which followed Israel’s assassination of high-level Iranian, Hamas and Hezbollah officials, failed to inflict significant damage as a result of US and Israeli efforts to shoot down the projectiles
No deaths occurred within Israel’s internationally recognized borders; one Palestinian man was killed in the occupied West Bank
However the barrage, demonstrated that Israel’s sophisticated missile defense system can be overwhelmed, allowing scores of missiles to hit Israeli soil

“The THAAD Battery will augment Israel’s integrated air defense system” said Pentagon spokesman Pat Ryder
“This action underscores the United States’ ironclad commitment to the defense of Israel and to defend Americans in Israel, from any further ballistic missile attacks by Iran”
Both Vice President Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump have vowed to forcefully defend Israel while expressing support for a swift end to the war
Despite numerous disagreements between President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the course of the year-long war, the president’s decision to deliver the THAAD system before Israel’s attack represents another example of his willingness to trust Netanyahu and give him the benefit of the doubt
Harrison Mann, a former US Army officer who served as an analyst at the Defense Intelligence Agency:
Quote
“Once this battery is in place and Israel enjoys the protection of American air defenders, what incentive does Netanyahu have to keep his word and not strike the sensitive targets he promised to avoid?”
1. The THAAD system is specifically designed to shoot down ballistic missiles 2. The ground-based system doesn’t have any warheads and isn’t used to strike buildings or conduct offensive attacks 3. Rather, the THAAD system only counters incoming short, medium and intermediate-range ballistic missiles

Quote
“carrots” rather than sticks to induce Israel into less aggressive behavior
The decision to place more US troops in Israel amid an impending attack increases the risk of US casualties — a scenario that could drag the United States even further into the widening conflict
Mann added,
Quote
"the risk to US soldiers who will crew the THAAD system is clear"
“Those soldiers will be operating from Israeli military bases which Iran already demonstrated the will and capability to strike, at a time when additional Iranian strikes are expected imminently”
Even if we make the unreasonably optimistic assumption, this THAAD battery can defeat any and all missiles headed its way,
Quote
the Israeli military cannot guarantee the safety of these US troops from drones which have successfully penetrated Israeli bases in the past
Aaron David Miller, a Middle East expert:
Quote
“If Iranian missiles hit a US soldier or pro-Iranian militias in Iraq or Syria kill or wound US personnel, there’s a high probability that the US would take kinetic action against Iran”
Each THAAD battery includes at least six truck-mounted launchers that carry up to eight missiles each
The system is widely sought after, particularly by Ukraine which is routinely under siege from Russian ballistic missiles
Pentagon spokesman Pat Ryder:
Quote
The U.S. military deployed the system to the Middle East *last year after the October 7 attack on Israel and in 2019 as part of a training event
Israel has other antimissile defenses, including its Iron Dome, Arrow and David’s Sling systems

Hezbollah warns of more rockets unless Israel ends air and ground attacks, vows to fire more rockets until Israel stops air strikes and ground invasion in Lebanon.
Hezbollah’s acting chief has warned the group plans to fire rockets into more areas of Israel until the Netanyahu government stops its air strikes and ends its ground invasion of Lebanon.
“I am telling the Israeli home front: The solution is a ceasefire,” Naim Qassem said in a speech broadcast live on Tuesday, adding that the group would not be defeated by the ongoing bombardment of its strongholds as well as the killing of its leadership.
Qassem said Hezbollah is focused on “hurting the enemy”, signalling that it would ramp up attacks further south in Israel.
Qassem has led the group since September 27 of this year, when its longtime leader, Hassan Nasrallah, was assassinated in an Israeli air strike in Beirut’s southern suburbs.
He added that a ceasefire in the besieged and bombarded Gaza Strip is the “solution” to end the escalating conflict.
“We cannot separate Lebanon from Palestine, or Palestine from the world,” he said.
From: BBC October 15, 2024 Netanyahu tells Macron he is opposed to unilateral Lebanon ceasefire
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is opposed to agreeing to a "unilateral ceasefire" in Lebanon, a statement from his office says.
The statement says he told French President Emmanuel Macron during a call earlier that a unilateral ceasefire would not change the "security situation" and only "return it to the way it was".
It says he told Macron that Israel would not agree to any arrangement that does not stop Hezbollah from rearming and regrouping.
The remarks come as Macron pressures Israel to abide by UN resolutions that include ending its occupation of Palestinian territories, telling his cabinet that "Mr Netanyahu must not forget that his country was created by a decision of the UN", a participant in the meeting told the AFP news agency.
UN dismal failure: "Mr Macron must not forget that this Middle East mess was created by a decision of the UN" not enforcing their own Resolution 1701 aimed at disarming terror outfits, prohibiting all armed militias from operating and disarmament of armed groups including Hezbollah
And France is small potatoes 1. They claim they are ‘Israel’s steadfast friend’ and 2. “support Israel’s security and demonstrate it” 3. They are not a major weapons provider for Israel either

THAAD: US anti-missile system operational in Israel in near future, Pentagon says
The US has also said that components for an advance anti-missile system have begun arriving in Israel, with the Pentagon saying the system is intended to help Israel defend itself and will be operational in the "near future"
An advance team of US military personnel, along with Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery components, have arrived in Israel, the Pentagon says.
More US personnel are expected to arrive in the coming days to operate the system to protect Israel from missile attack. Ryder adds the battery will be fully operational "in the near future"

Israel is reviewing a letter sent by the US secretary of state, Antony Blinken and defense secretary Lloyd Austin calling on Tel Aviv,

to improve Gaza’s humanitarian situation or risk losing US military aid
Reuters cites an Israeli official as saying,
Quote
Israel takes this matter seriously and intends to address the concerns raised in this letter with our American counterparts
This comes after Blinken and Austin warned their Israeli counterparts in a letter dated Sunday 13 October 2024 that
Quote
Israel must ease humanitarian suffering in the territory by lifting restrictions on the entry of assistance within 30 days
The letter, which restates US policy toward humanitarian aid and arms transfers, was sent amid deteriorating conditions in northern Gaza and an Israeli airstrike on a hospital tent site in central Gaza that killed at least four people and burned others
A similar letter that Blinken sent to Israeli officials in April 2024 led to more humanitarian assistance getting to the Palestinian territory, state department spokesperson Matthew Miller said Tuesday
Quote
"But that has not lasted. In fact, it’s fallen by over 50% from where it was at its peak”
Miller said at a briefing, the Associated Press reported
Quote
Austin and Blinken: “thought it was appropriate to make clear to the government of Israel that there are changes that they need to make again, to see that the level of assistance making it into Gaza comes back up from the very, very low levels that it is at today”
first reported by Axios, Austin and Blinken said in their letter, for Israel to continue qualifying for foreign military financing, 1. Israel must lift restrictions on the entry of assistance within 30 days 2. the level of aid getting into Gaza must increase to at least 350 trucks a day 3. Israel must institute additional humanitarian pauses 4. and provide increased security for humanitarian sites
White House national security spokesperson John Kirby told reporters,
Quote
“The letter was not meant as a threat”
“The letter was simply meant to reiterate the sense of urgency we feel and the seriousness with which we feel it, about the need for an increase, a dramatic increase in humanitarian assistance”
Let's all pray for our friend Meyer. I hope he and his family are safe. No one should have to go through what the good people of Israel are going through.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — U.S. long-range B-2 stealth bombers launched airstrikes early Thursday morning targeting underground bunkers used by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, officials said.
Today, U.S. military forces, including U.S. Air Force B-2 bombers, conducted precision strikes against five hardened underground weapons storage locations in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen. U.S. forces targeted several of the Houthis' underground facilities housing various weapons components of types that the Houthis have used to target civilian and military vessels throughout the region. This was a unique demonstration of the United States' ability to target facilities that our adversaries seek to keep out of reach, no matter how deeply buried underground, hardened, or fortified. The employment of U.S. Air Force B-2 Spirit long-range stealth bombers demonstrate U.S. global strike capabilities to take action against these targets when necessary, anytime, anywhere.
For over a year, the Iran-backed Houthis, Specially Designated Global Terrorists, have recklessly and unlawfully attacked U.S. and international vessels transiting the Red Sea, the Bab Al-Mandeb Strait, and the Gulf of Aden. The Houthis' illegal attacks continue to disrupt the free flow of international commerce, threaten environmental catastrophe, and put innocent civilian lives and U.S. and partner forces' lives at risk. At the direction of President Biden, I authorized these targeted strikes to further degrade the Houthis' capability to continue their destabilizing behavior and to protect and defend U.S. forces and personnel in one of the world's most critical waterways.
Again, the United States will not hesitate to take action to defend American lives and assets; to deter attacks against civilians and our regional partners; and to protect freedom of navigation and increase the safety and security in these waterways for U.S., coalition, and merchant vessels. We will continue to make clear to the Houthis that there will be consequences for their illegal and reckless attacks. I am grateful for the professionalism and skill of the brave American troops who took part in today's actions and who continue to stand guard in defense of our Nation.

“The United Nations peacekeeping force known as UNIFIL had one job: Keep armed terrorists out of southern Lebanon, where they could shoot at Israel
It failed so abysmally that Israel has had to go to war to clear out the terrorists…”
UNIFIL was supposed to keep the north of Israel out of danger. Instead it has allowed Hezbollah to entrench itself in southern Lebanon over the years, storing arms in many of the homes and building a network of fully stocked attack tunnels and small outdoor weapons depots in preparation for an October 7, 2023 style assault
Israeli troops have found a tunnel about 100 meters from a UNIFIL outpost.
For 11 months Hezbollah fired more than 8,500 rockets and missiles at Israel, mostly from southern Lebanon, under UNIFIL's nose “The area, militia-free by order of the UN Security Council, was soon crawling with the world’s best-armed terrorists But the peacekeepers said little and did less”

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said Sinwar "has been eliminated," confirming that the Hamas supreme leader has been killed. Hamas sources have said they believe Sinwar is no longer alive.
