From: The Guardian November 3, 2024 Israeli first of its kind naval raid
Israel abducts alleged Hezbollah official in unprecedented sea raid Commandos land in northern Lebanon in highly unusual operation to capture supposed militant group member
The Israeli military abducted who it said was a senior Hezbollah official in an unprecedented operation on Saturday morning during which Israeli commandos landed on the shores of Batroun, northern Lebanon, captured the alleged official and escaped via speedboat.
In a statement, an Israeli military official said its forces captured a “senior operative of Hezbollah” and transferred him to its territory to be investigated by military intelligence.
The media outlet Axios cited Israeli sources as saying the captured man – Imad Amhaz – was responsible for Hezbollah’s naval operations.
Lebanon’s caretaker minister of transport, Ali Hamie, said that Amhaz was a civilian boat captain, while Hezbollah did not comment on allegations that he belonged to the organisation
The Israeli naval raid was a first of its kind, with Israeli soldiers landing in north Lebanon – an area unaffiliated with Hezbollah and almost 100 miles from the Lebanon-Israel border.
“An unidentified military force carried out a landing operation on the beach of Batroun, and moved … to a chalet near the beach, where it kidnapped the citizen Imad Amhaz and … left by speedboats to the open sea,” Lebanon’s National News Agency reported.

Extracts: Iran’s supreme leader vows ‘teeth-breaking’ response to Israel and US after strikes on military sites Iran mocks Israel’s ‘weak’ attacks as hardliners call for reprisalThe Guardian by Patrick Wintour Diplomatic editor 27 October 2024 Older article but.... Now, one thing that I learned from The Godfather was to try to think as the Iranians around me think Now on that basis, anything's possible - Israeli attack on Iran deadly or “minimal”?
Extracts: Political elite under pressure from variety of sources, with US urging Iran to step back from the brink The Iranian government has belittled the scale and effectiveness of the Israeli attack on its military sites but hardliners in the parliament insisted the strikes breached Iranian red lines and required a swift response, preferably at a time when Israel is already enmeshed in Lebanon and Gaza The internal Iranian debate on how to respond to the long-awaited Israeli attack turns on, whether 1. to treat Israel’s breach of Iranian national sovereignty as too grave to be ignored or instead 2. to heed the advice coming from the region and from the US to acknowledge the relatively limited nature of the attack 3. and to step back from the brink by not launching reprisals In making its decision, the Iranian political elite will have to weigh conflicting political, diplomatic and military pressures But the initial tone from the government was one of patriotic pride at the performance of the air defences, rather than calls for immediate retribution Some even claimed that the air defences proved better than Israel’s Iron Dome. In what amounted to a holding statement, the foreign ministry condemned the attack, adding: “Iran feels entitled and obliged to defend itself against foreign acts of aggression”
The Iranian government spokesperson, Fatemeh Mohajerani, said “only limited damage has been done”, and that the pride of Iranians had been strengthened by their response to the attacks But an internal political debate has already started on how to respond which is likely to replicate differences inside the political elite that have been evident ever since Iran surprisingly elected the reformist Masoud Pezeshkian as president, partly on a ticket to improve relations with the west

Iran mocks Israel’s ‘weak’ attacks as hardliners call for reprisalThe Guardian by Patrick Wintour Diplomatic editor 27 October 2024 Older article but.... - mountain of the Israelis gave birth to a mouse
Extracts: Political elite under pressure from variety of sources Amir-Hossein Sabeti, the ultra-conservative MP for Tehran, said on X: “Stable security depends on authority and a strong response to the smallest mistake of the enemy Although the mountain of the Israelis gave birth to a mouse, the violation of Iran’s red line and the invasion of the country’s territory must be answered at a level that will surprise them The best time to respond is when they are engaged in an attritional war in Gaza and Beirut” On social media there were calls for Operation True Promise 3 a reference to the code name given to Iran’s first two attacks on Israel By contrast, the former Tehran University professor Sadegh Zibakalam said: “Israel’s early morning air attack on Iran was, 1. more than a military achievement for Tel Aviv 2. it was a diplomatic success for Washington, which was able to force Netanyahu strictly to limit the attack 3. so that Iran does not have to retaliate 4. Americans have shown for the umpteenth time "they do not want war with Iran” Many ridiculed Israel’s attack as weak, after the preceding week’s threats to attack Iran’s oil and nuclear sites Ebrahim Rezaei, a member of the parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, wrote in the first minutes after the attack on X: “I entered Tehran through Mehrabad airport a few minutes ago and passed through a number of streets, I did not see anything unusual The Zionist enemy is like small change, it only makes noise but has no value or effect They are too weak to seriously harm Great Iran” Hesamoddin Ashena, an adviser to Iran’s former president Hassan Rouhani, wrote: “You played with the lion’s tail This is not Palestine, nor Lebanon, Iraq, nor Afghanistan. This is Iran” Some of the big military and political players in Iran have yet to make statements

Iran mocks Israel’s ‘weak’ attacks as hardliners call for reprisalThe Guardian by Patrick Wintour Diplomatic editor 27 October 2024 Older article but.... Extracts: Political elite under pressure from variety of sources Diplomatically, the Iranian foreign ministry will also be listening to the advice from the region, especially from Saudi Arabia, with which it is trying to rebuild ties Iran will be pleased with the messages of solidarity from across the Gulf including Oman, Riyadh, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates, signs that the country’s recent diplomatic push in the region has paid dividends Such public displays of solidarity are not automatic between Iran and its Arab neighbours Oman’s foreign minister, Badr Albusaidi, reflected widespread sentiment, saying: “We are very concerned by the flagrant violation of aggression on Iran this morning. Thankfully, the damage appears limited and we dearly hope there are no casualties
“It’s time for the world to wake up to the urgent need to address the root causes of this crisis, above all Israel’s illegal and brutal occupation of Palestinian lands” The Jordanian army stressed that it had not allowed Israel to use its airspace Some of this Arab support however is likely to be contingent on Iran not escalating the crisis - It was noticeable that neither Saudi nor the UAE named Israel in their condemnatory statements
Hardliners in Tehran in turn will be asking, what this show of regional solidarity represents in practice and whether Iran’s best route to security remains as they have always insisted, in restoring the battered “axis of resistance” On the military side, daybreak allowed Iran and open source experts to survey the scale of the damage, including the death of two Iranian army soldiers, even if the government ordered Iranians not to upload pictures

Hamas now accepts Israel killed Muhammad DeifThe Times of Israel 03 November 2024 Extracts: - Hamas now accepts Israel killed Muhammad Deif, has arrested 2 people
Tests of mangled remains produced inconclusive results but after months without word from military chief, terror group now acknowledges Deif did not survive, Asharq al-Awsat reports Finally acknowledging terror leader Muhammad Deif was killed in a July 2024 airstrike in Gaza, Hamas has interrogated two people on suspicion that they led Israel to him, Asharq al-Awsat reported Saturday Hamas sources cited by the London-based, Saudi-owned newspaper said Hamas’s leadership had taken time to confirm the matter as communication with the shadowy terror chief had been limited prior to the July 13 strike But it concluded that Deif was dead after not hearing from him for some time Israel had targeted Deif and Hamas’s Khan Younis Brigade chief Rafa’a Salameh in the airstrike on a Hamas compound that killed dozens in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis The IDF confirmed Salameh’s death a day later and Deif’s on August 1 Hamas has so far officially denied the killing of Deif, who led the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the terror group’s military wing Asharq al-Awsat said one of the men arrested over Deif’s killing was one of Deif’s couriers as was previously reported by Al Arabiya, which said the terror group suspected, he had tipped off Israeli security forces. The paper said that the results of the investigation have not been disclosed Deif who was 58 had commanded the Brigades for over two decades and had long been one of the terror figures most wanted by Israel It was Israel’s eighth attempt to eliminate Deif who was key to Hamas’s transformation from a small terror group into a paramilitary force Deif managed to evade and survive multiple attempts on his life between 2001 and 2021 though Deif was seriously injured in two of them and his ability to frustrate Israel’s formidable security apparatuses for so long had made him something of a mythical figure for Palestinians as well as Israelis Deif along with Hamas’s Gaza leader Yahya Sinwar, was an architect of Hamas’s October 7, 2023 massacre in southern Israel when thousands of terrorists broke through the border and killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians while taking 251 people hostage to Gaza Deif had topped Israel’s most-wanted list since 1995 for his involvement in the planning and execution of a large number of terror attacks, including many bus bombings in the 1990s and early 2000s

Israel breaks up another Iran spy ringReuters by Jonathan Saul 31 October 2024 Extracts: - Israel breaks up another Iran spy ring, security services say
Israeli security forces have broken up a suspected spy ring inside Israel that was working on behalf of Iranian intelligence - the latest such espionage group in weeks to be announced, the Shin Bet and police said on Thursday In the new incident, an Israeli couple from the town of Lod near Tel Aviv were arrested for gathering intelligence about national infrastructure and security sites including the Mossad spy agency headquarters as well as surveillance of a female academic, the Shin Bet security service and the police said The ring was part of efforts by Iran to recruit people who had originated in the Caucasus region. a Shin Bet source said, "These incidents join a series of thwarted attempts that have been revealed in recent weeks, in which Israeli citizens were arrested, for working on behalf of Iranian intelligence agents and performed specific missions on their behalf" The investigation showed that one of the couple was tasked with tracking an academic target at Israel's Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) think tank whom the Iranians wanted to be physically harmed, a joint statement by the police and Shin Bet added The suspect was separately asked by the Iranians to look for an assassin for a separate mission Another person, whose origin was Azerbaijan, was also recruited by one of the couple for specific tasks, the statement said The INSS said, "it was thankful the security services had prevented a planned attack on one of its employees" INSS director, reserve major general Tamir Hayman, added, "While the INSS is an independent research institute, not part of Israel's defence establishment, it is the country’s leading security research institute and as such, Iran seeks to harm its people" Iran's foreign ministry was not immediately available for comment The prosecutor's office of Israel's central district will serve a severe indictment against the suspects on Thursday, the statement said Israel's security forces said earlier this month they had broken up two separate spy rings on behalf of Iran, in Jerusalem and the north of Israel Israel has a history of intelligence operations in Iran, allegedly including the assassination in July 2024 of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of the Palestinian group Hamas in a Tehran state guesthouse Israel has made no claim of responsibility for that killing *Reporting by Jonathan Saul in Jerusalem, additional reporting by Parisa Hafezi in Dubai, Editing by William Maclean

Israel’s claim of military superiority has “fallen into pieces”Al Jazeera 27 October 2024 in fairness, Israel is fighting terrorists in 7 fronted guerilla warfare terrorWar correspondent Elijah Magnier describes why, the Israeli military is incapable of carrying out attacks on Gaza on its own and instead relies heavily on its allies for support Extracts: Giving the extensive US, UK support in intelligence, precision bombing to Israelis that is illustrating the high level of Western commitment and how they are fully partner in this war There are two main points that emerge here 1. Firstly the Israeli vulnerability and 2. Secondly the ethic of not only Israel but the US and UK The Israeli vulnerability because the narrative of Israel as the strongest army in the Middle East has fallen into pieces because due to the available data, Israel is not fighting alone Israel seems incapable of fighting non-state actors, in a very small area and requires the support of superpower like the US and NATO in terms of intelligence gathering, men, air support, interception, task forces, surveillance, ammunition supplies And with all these reconnaissance missions, it shows that only 20 percent was carried out by Israel while 80 percent by the Israeli allies which reflect the scale of intelligence gathering and sharing And that takes me [Magnier] to the second point which are the ethics US President Joe Biden said that there are too many civilian casualties which means 1. either the intelligence are wrong and 2. they are failing to distinguish between combatants and non-combatants or 3. everybody here has a serious question in the operational ethics and effectiveness of their operation 4. and joining the Israelis in their crime and crimes against humanity

From: The Guardian November 3, 2024 Israeli first of its kind naval raid
Extracts: Israel abducts alleged Hezbollah official in unprecedented sea raid Capture of Hezbollah operative-Claim German Navy coordinated with IsraelThe Times of Israel 03 November 2024 - Hezbollah operative “significant source of knowledge”
Wearing Lebanese uniforms, some 20 Israeli commandos took part in Friday raid Hezbollah-affiliated media says special forces were likely in area for reconnaissance before nabbing alleged terror operative, reiterates claim German Navy coordinated with Israel According to the Al-Akhbar report: operatives from the Navy’s Shayetet 13 commando unit were disguised as Lebanese security forces during the unusual raid in Batroun, south of Tripoli, some 140 kilometers (87 miles) north of Israel’s maritime border with Lebanon. While the Israeli military has attacked northern Lebanon via airstrikes, its ground forces have been operating only in the country’s south Al-Akhbar report: "The late Friday raid lasted a mere four minutes and involved some 20 operatives, along with several unidentified civilians"
"some Israeli special forces had likely been in the area for reconnaissance and surveillance before the operation" The report also said, Lebanese investigators believe a young man riding a bicycle seen in the widely circulated footage of the operation was part of the Israeli commando unit -- No one rides bicycles! in Lebanon The Hezbollah-affiliated outlet cast doubt on the Israel Defense Forces’ assertion that Amhaz is a “significant source of knowledge” in the terror group’s naval force Al-Akhbar report on Sunday also reiterated earlier accusations in Lebanese media that the German Navy operating within UN peacekeeping forces in the area had assisted with the Israeli raid UNIFIL the United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon, denied involvement in the operation, with an unnamed deputy spokesperson telling the Saudi channel Asharq News on Saturday the organization “has no involvement in facilitating any kidnapping or any other violation of Lebanese sovereignty” After warning for nearly a year that Israel would not tolerate the ongoing Hezbollah attacks, Israel launched a major operation against Hezbollah in September 2024 eliminating much of its leadership and crippling some of its fighting capabilities In October 2024 Israel launched a ground offensive in Lebanon’s south to clear the border area of terror infrastructure, Israel said was to be used, in an October 7, 2023 style attack on Israeli northern communities

All of Israel's current fighting enemies are supported and funded by Iran and probably other terrorist-supporting countries. Wall Street Journal says Israel has gravely reduced (but not erased) the fighting capabilities of Hamas, Hezbollah and Houthis, and has exposed Iran's defensive vulnerabilities--which the much larger Western powers have been unable to do. Sure thing but these terrorists with their bottomless support and funds by Iran and probably other terrorist-supporting countries and the numerous nations hostile to Israel “reorganize its ranks” come back bigger and more lethal 1. Hamas still fighting and still has the Israeli hostages -- How many are alive 2. Hezbollah still firing drones, missiles, rockets etc. causing death and destruction 3. Houthis still attacking the ships 4. Iran and the terrorists exposed Israel's defensive vulnerabilities 5. Israel still fighting on 7 fronts -- no wins 6. terrorists fighting capabilities may have been reduced but... still “undefeated” “unconquered” ongoing terror

My take, for what it is worth! It also shows -- Ref: various posts: among others, - how reliant Israel is, on US military support [and Israel's allies]
- Israel's need for US defence assistance amid the expanding war
- Israel's need for Washington's help, to close gaps in Israel's protective shields and air defence systems eg: THAAD
THAAD apparently “in place” but not operative yet
Israel is not doing itself any favours All for taking out the terrorists but.... among others, - wholesale carpet-bombing -- Every life is equally precious whether Israeli, Palestinian, Lebanese or
Israel repeatedly says, it seeks to minimize civilian fatalities and stresses that the terrirists use civilians as human shields, fighting from civilian areas including homes, hospitals, schools and mosques - seeming disdain for non-Israeli lives
The horrors and immeasurable suffering of the innocent civilians cannot be discounted.... not to mention the Thousands killed Millions displaced
Key aspects of the Israeli-Arab conflict include, 1. the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip 2. the status of Jerusalem 3. Israeli settlements 4. borders 5. security 6. water rights 7. the permit regime 8. Palestinian freedom of movement 9. and the Palestinian right of return

Houthis to target Israel-associated maritime assetsSkynews.com.au 04 November 2024 Extracts: Yemen's Houthi Armed Forces claim, they will not recognise changes in asset ownership and will target any vessels associated with or heading towards Israel The announcement is in response to alleged intelligence information which revealed Israeli shipping groups were selling their assets to other companies The Houthis say they will maintain the maritime blockade until aggression in Gaza and Lebanon is stopped How is terrorists Houthis still existing let alone still attacking ships for more than a year.... Houthis should have been neutralised by the combined forces of Israel, US, UK, NATO long ago -- Nipped in the bud. Frankly....

Iran slams ‘destabilizing presence’ as US sends B-52 bombers to regionThe Times of Israel 04 November 2024 Extracts: - US sends B-52 bombers to region
Tehran says it won’t be deterred, vows ‘definite and decisive’ response to Israeli airstrikes but expresses support for ceasefire efforts in Gaza and Lebanon Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei on Monday criticized what he called the United States’ “destabilizing presence” after the deployment of B-52 bombers in the region “We have always believed that the presence of America in the region is a destabilizing presence” said Baghaei at a news conference in response to a question about the deployment, adding, it “will not deter [Iran’s] resolve to defend itself” The US military announced on Saturday the deployment of heavy B-52 bombers to the Middle East as a warning to Iran which has vowed to respond to Israeli strikes on its military sites on October 26, 2024 Weeks earlier, the Islamic Republic launched some 200 ballistic missiles at Israel on October 1, 2024 sending most of the population rushing to bomb shelters and safe rooms The assault — Iran’s second direct attack on Israel, after a drone and missile strike in April 2024 — caused relatively minor damage to military bases and some residential areas in Israel and killed a Palestinian man in the West Bank Iran said its October 1 attack came in retaliation for the killing of Tehran-backed terror leaders and an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander *Associated Press and Times of Israel staff contributed to this report

Iran slams ‘destabilizing presence’ as US sends B-52 bombers to regionThe Times of Israel 04 November 2024 Extracts: - Israel’s airstrikes on Iran 26 October 2024
At least four soldiers were killed in Israel’s airstrikes which also caused “limited damage” to a few radar systems, officials said at the time Iranian media also reported that a civilian had been killed Efforts by Iran to downplay the attack faltered as satellite photos and multiple reports in global media showed Israel’s strikes, 1. crippled Iran’s ballistic missile production 2. destroyed at least a dozen solid fuel mixers 3. and disabled crucial air defenses protecting major energy installations Iran’s response would be “definite and decisive” Baghaei said, adding "Iran supported “all initiatives and efforts” to push for a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon where Israel is at war with the Iran-backed Hamas and Hezbollah terror groups, respectively On Monday, Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian said, Iran had missiles so Israel “wouldn’t dare attack us” During the news conference, Baghaei said, Iran’s official position against changing the nuclear doctrine and pursuing atomic weapons remained the same Citing a recent speech by Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah -- Ali Khamenei, Baghaei said, the Islamic Republic would be “equipped with everything necessary to defend” itself - Iran has long threatened Israel with destruction and called to wipe out the Jewish state
Iran, which directly attacked Israel with missiles and drones for the first time in April has been dealing with its own problems at home, 1. as its economy struggles under the weight of international sanctions 2. and it has faced years of widespread, multiple protests *Associated Press and Times of Israel staff contributed to this report

Israel’s use of air-launched ballistic missiles against Iran sparks market interestThe Times of Israel by Reuters and ToI Staff 04 November 2024 Extracts: - Israel’s air-launched ballistic missiles against Iran
Weapon’s speed and moving launch point make it more resistant to air defenses than its ground-based counterparts and the cruise missiles used by most major powers, experts say Israel’s effective use of air-launched ballistic missiles in its response to Iran’s latest missile attack is expected to pique interest elsewhere in acquiring the weapons which most major powers have avoided in favor of cruise missiles and glide bombs The Israel Defense Forces IDF said its October 26 raid knocked out Iranian missile factories and air defenses in three waves of strikes, in retaliation for Iran’s massive barrage of ballistic missiles that sent millions of Israelis into bomb shelters on October 1 Based on satellite imagery, researchers said targets of the Israeli strike included buildings once used in Iran’s nuclear program Tehran defends such targets with “a huge variety” of anti-aircraft systems, said Justin Bronk, an airpower and technology expert at London’s Royal United Services Institute Cruise missiles are easier targets for dense, integrated air defenses than ballistic missiles are but ballistic missiles are often fired from known launch points and most cannot change course in flight

Israel’s use of air-launched ballistic missiles against Iran sparks market interestThe Times of Israel by Reuters and ToI Staff 04 November 2024 Extracts: Experts say high-speed, highly accurate air-launched ballistic missiles (ALBM) such as the Israel Aerospace Industries’ Rampage, get around problems facing ground-based ballistic missiles and air-launched cruise missiles (ALCM) — weapons that use small wings to fly great distances and maintain altitude Jeffrey Lewis, director of the East Asia Nonproliferation Program at the James Martin Centre for Nonproliferation Studies at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in California said, “The main advantage of an ALBM over an ALCM is speed to penetrate defenses” “The downside — accuracy — looks to have been largely solved” Ground-launched ballistic missiles — which Iran used to attack Israel twice this year and which both Ukraine and Russia have used since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022 — are common in the arsenals of many countries So, too, are cruise missiles Because ALBMs are carried by aircraft, their launch points are flexible, helping strike planners Uzi Rubin, a senior researcher at the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security, one of the architects of Israel’s missile defenses, "The advantage is that being air-launched, they can come from any direction, complicating the task of defending against them” The weapons are not invulnerable to air defenses In Ukraine, Lockheed Martin PAC-3 missiles have repeatedly intercepted Russia’s Khinzhals

Israel’s use of air-launched ballistic missiles against Iran sparks market interestThe Times of Israel by Reuters and ToI Staff 04 November 2024 Extracts: Experts say high-speed, highly accurate air-launched ballistic missiles (ALBM) such as the Israel Aerospace Industries’ Rampage, get around problems facing ground-based ballistic missiles and air-launched cruise missiles (ALCM) — weapons that use small wings to fly great distances and maintain altitude Many countries, including the United States and Britain, experimented with ALBMs during the Cold War Only Israel, Russia and China are known to field the weapons now The US tested a hypersonic ALBM the Lockheed Martin AGM-183 but it received no funding for the 2025 fiscal year because it has a large arsenal of cruise missiles and other types of long-range strike weapons, Washington has otherwise shown little interest in ALBMs A US Air Force official, speaking on condition of anonymity said, "ALBMs are not used in Air Force operations” a senior US defense technical analyst who declined to be identified because the matter is sensitive, said, “Raytheon’s SM-6 an air-defense missile that has been repurposed for air-to-air and surface-to-surface missions, also has been tested as an air-launched anti-ship weapon” In tests, the missile was able to strike a small target on land representing the center of mass of a destroyer, the analyst said Publicly, the SM-6 is not meant for air-to-ground strikes a defense industry executive said, on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, Because ALBMs are essentially a combination of guidance, warheads and rocket motors, many countries that have precision weapons already have the capability to pursue them"
“This is a clever way of taking a common set of technologies and components and turning it into a very interesting new weapon that gives them far more capability and therefore options, at a reasonable price”

How is terrorists Houthis still existing let alone still attacking ships for more than a year.... Houthis should have been neutralised by the combined forces of Israel, US, UK, NATO long ago -- Nipped in the bud. Frankly.... US, UK bomb Houthi sites in Yemen, January 12 amid surge in Red Sea ship attacks These regular raids, by the joint forces included attacks on underground weapons and missile storage facilities, air defence systems, radars and a helicopter However, the Houthis responded with defiance and have so far failed to halt the attacks, which have upset global trade and raised shipping rates. As at October 28 the Houthis have targeted more than 90 merchant vessels with missiles and drones since the war in Gaza started in October last year.

"What will stop this... war is the battlefield" he said, citing fighting in south Lebanon and Hezbollah attacks on Israel. Israel is "betting on prolonging the war so it becomes a war of attrition... We are ready," Qassem said in his second speech since being named Hezbollah secretary-general last week. Israeli first of its kind naval raidQassem demanded explanations from the Lebanese army after Israeli commandos seized a man from north Lebanon on Saturday who they said was a senior Hezbollah operative. He said the operation was "a great offence to Lebanon" and a "violation" of its sovereignty.
