Spain: Mexican “Chapitos” cocaine lab dismantled
The National Police in Spain have arrested sixteen people and dismantled two laboratories for the production of synthetic drugs and cocaine in the past week. Among the suspects is a chemist, who according to the police belonged to the Mexican Sinaloa cartel.
Methamphetamine
There were eight searches during which 125 kilos of cocaine paste, more than six kilos of methamphetamine, almost 31 kilos of cocaine, 7,500 liters of raw materials and more than 21,000 euros were seized.
The labs were found in a very inaccessible area in Toledo province. In one, methamphetamine (crystal meth) was being made and in the other, cocaine.
Unusual movements
The investigation had been ongoing since last July when police received a tip about drug production in the Yuncos municipality of Toledo. After several observations, investigators were able to map out where the labs should be by observing unusual movements of people and vehicles.
According to Spanish police, Mexican criminal organizations are expanding their influence in the country by setting up drug labs of their own. The chemist worked for one of two rival factions within the Sinaloa Cartel group: Los Chapitos, which is the faction led by the sons of Joaquín Guzmán “El Chapo”.
