The mystery surrounding Antonio Strangio's disappearance in Locride deepens: investigations continue
The discovery of the charred car between Bovalino and Bianco, near the Bonamico river. The investigators are maintaining maximum confidentiality

The case of the disappearance of Antonio Strangio, the 42-year-old who disappeared from San Luca, whose charred car was found between Bovalino and Bianco, is being kept under wraps. The man, already known to the police, is said to have been missing for several days. The car he was traveling in was reportedly found on Monday afternoon in a peripheral area near the Bonamico river.
There are still many questions surrounding a case that the Bianco Carabinieri Company is investigating under the coordination of the Locri Prosecutor's Office. In the past few hours, investigators have interviewed the family members to try to reconstruct what happened in the hours preceding the man's disappearance.
A mystery that is also deepening in light of what has been leaked since the very first moments, namely the presence inside the car of a charred carcass of an animal, a sheep or a goat. A disturbing detail, which however has not been confirmed by investigative sources. Meanwhile, the search continues in the area where the vehicle was found with a significant deployment of forces and resources. ( mr)

investigation into the disappearance
San Luca and the “mystery” of Antonio Strangio: the possible murder and the shadow of the 'ndrangheta
The 42-year-old is the son of Giuseppe Strangio, one of the protagonists of the “excellent” kidnappings on the Aspromonte from De Feo to Casella, linked to the “Barbaro” branch

SAN LUCA An impassable wall of silence , a very strict secrecy. For days San Luca has sunk into a surreal silence, bringing back memories of distant times, recalled like ghosts. The news of the sudden disappearance of Antonio Strangio, in fact, has been fueling terrible suspicions for days that no one wants to say, at the moment. Including investigators and law enforcement. What “broke” the balance were a series of posters that appeared in and around San Luca, with the following written on them: «The Strangio and Scalia families thank the entire population but waive visits». An emblematic phrase that was chosen, in all likelihood, by those directly involved and which encapsulates the drama of a case that is yet to be revealed.

The Mystery of Saint Luke
A terrible mystery still surrounds the disappearance of Antonio Strangio and the investigations of the Bianco Carabinieri Company under the coordination of the Locri Prosecutor's Office. While on the one hand the goal is to shed light on what happened, on the other the scenarios appear anything but optimistic. For a few days now there has been no news and the discovery of the off-road vehicle set on fire with the remains of what could be - perhaps - the carcass of an unspecified animal, have exponentially raised the level of attention. If Antonio Strangio had been killed, disturbing scenarios would open up and the risk of sinking into a possible "'ndrangheta war" would not be so remote. Also because the name and the context are of the highest order.

Giuseppe Strangio and the season of kidnappings
The 42-year-old Antonio Strangio, in fact, is the son of the more well-known Giuseppe Strangio (born in 1954) . A sort of “key figure” of the local ‘ndrangheta and beyond. Already sentenced in 1974 to 14 years for a murder committed on February 2, 1970, he has a series of convictions – definitive – linked to some “excellent” kidnappings: Giovanni Piazzalunga, Carlo De Feo and Cesare Casella. The engineer Carlo De Feo, a Neapolitan industrialist, was kidnapped in Casavatore at the beginning of 1983 and freed, after more than a year of captivity, in the countryside of Oppido Mamertina. At the time, the men of the Reggio Calabria Flying Squad had managed to arrest fifteen people from what they still considered an “emerging gang” while six other people, including a prominent name like Sebastiano Pelle, had managed to avoid capture. The investigators concentrated their inquiries in the mafia triangle San Luca-Natile-Platì, in whose territories five hideouts had in the meantime been located where the industrialist had been held prisoner.

The Casella Kidnapping
Much more important was the kidnapping of Cesare Casella, which took place in Pavia on 18 January 1988 and which also hit the headlines internationally. The courageous mother became “historic” in spite of herself when, a year later, she decided to go down to Calabria and stage a sensational protest in the square in Locri. She then went to San Luca, reached Ciminà with chains around her neck, prayed in front of the “crucifix of the kidnapped” in the Zervò district (between Platì and Santa Cristina d'Aspromonte) and, finally, also visited the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Polsi. Casella's kidnapping – which lasted 743 days – is the second longest after that of Carlo Celadon (831 days). The first turning point came at Christmas 1989 when the GIS showed up at the agreed meeting point for the delivery of the ransom and, after a firefight, captured Giuseppe Strangio while he was a fugitive. The man, in fact, had escaped from the Lecce District Prison, while he was serving a 27-year prison sentence for the De Feo kidnapping. It was Strangio himself who made an appeal to the kidnappers, with his release taking place in January 1990.

Strangio “Barbarian”
But that's not all. Investigations over the last few decades have allowed Giuseppe Strangio to be framed within the powerful 'ndrangheta family of the Versacis and the Strangio "Barbaros", dedicated to brutal kidnappings that brought the activity of organized crime in lower Ionian Calabria to the attention of international public opinion and allowed the acquisition of huge profits subsequently invested in international drug dealing.

The investigations
In the meantime, the RIS of Messina, according to unofficial sources, are carrying out the necessary tests on the remains of what has so far been indicated as an animal carcass, found on board the car destroyed by flames between Bovalino and Bianco. No lead can or should be excluded at the moment. Not even one that could lead to a terrible mafia-style murder. (g.curcio@corrierecal.it)

the investigation
'Ndrangheta, the firepower of the Mazzaferro: an arsenal available to the clan. «We have valuable weapons»
From the DDA of Rome the references to the operation "Circolo Formato". The role of Nicolò Sfara: «He procured weapons and ammunition»
Published: 22/11/2024 – 11:41

ROME A veritable arsenal of weapons at the disposal of the 'ndrangheta Mazzaferro clan , the clan from Marina di Gioiosa Ionica that from Locride was able to expand with ramifications in northern Italy and abroad. The firepower that the clan could count on is described in the pages of the order of the investigation launched in Rome that led to the arrest of 25 people. The operation of the Capitoline DDA revealed the dense web of interests and relationships between members of the clan with local entrepreneurs for the control of companies "serving" the marketing of petroleum products for the implementation of tax fraud . And in the over 300 pages of the order, there is also talk of the interest in weapons of Nicolò Sfara (born in '94), known as "Leone-Francesco-Silvio-Bruno", nephew of the deceased boss Giuseppe Mazzaferro and the current regent, the boss Rocco Mazzaferro (born in '64). In the course of some conversations intercepted in the environment, it emerges, in fact, that Sfara «as proof of the role recognized to him within the association, worked to obtain weapons and ammunition of illicit origin».

The clan's arsenal: " We have valuable weapons "
The Roman investigation refers to what was gathered in previous investigations into the Reggio clan. "We have valuable weapons... valuable weapons." A very young Nicolò Sfara said this in 2008, during a conversation intercepted and included in the documents of the "Circolo Formato" investigation. The reference is to the end-of-year party (December 31, 2008) that took place behind the house of Rocco Mazzaferro's father (which overlooks citrus fruit fields), where technical equipment for interceptions had been installed. The conversation shows that a certain Tonino, with a Roman accent but unidentified, had recently arrived and had even used a briefcase to transport the weapons and ammunition to the site . Among other things, the man had also brought "a 45 with a laser aiming system, a real 'bazooka'."
"The gang and, through it, its affiliates, had a real arsenal at their disposal," the judges wrote, who emphasized: "The assortment was certainly vast and varied and it logically follows that it is an arsenal attributable to the Mazzaferro gang. Not only because of its vastness and variety, but also because it seems absolutely unthinkable that Mazzaferro Rocco could have "authorized the port" and allowed the entry and permanence of an arsenal of this kind in a place under his family's control without having had some measure of paternity over it." And among the main illicit activities carried out by the clan, since its origins, are cigarette smuggling, theft, fraud, the manufacturing and dealing of counterfeit banknotes, robberies, extortion, drug and arms trafficking.

During a conversation dated January 2021 and ended up in the Roman investigation, it emerges that Sfara – and therefore the Mazzaferro gang – had access to weapons. In fact, the 30-year-old speaks with some unidentified individuals interested in buying and selling weapons and ammunition. « But have you tried all the shots here? " », the interlocutor asks Sfara. « I can bring him a pack of seven, eh, eh. More than that I can't say ... '', the conversation continues. « When he fires the shot, the shot yes, it compresses in the barrel, it goes, you know how to do it, half . So. This is a ... inc. le. ., we loaded these again, these go, they go a thousand percent, unless you put them in water ... » . (m.ripolo@corrierecal.it)

the decision
'Ndrangheta, France rejects Edgardo Greco's release request
For the fourth time, the Court of Appeal of Lyon has ruled negatively against the former fugitive sentenced to life imprisonment in Italy
Published: 2024-11-23 – 20:57

LYON A new request for the release of Edgardo Greco , an alleged member of the Calabrian mafia arrested in France after 17 years on the run, has been rejected by the Lyon Court of Appeal . His lawyer announced. Edgardo Greco, 65, accused of belonging to the 'Ndrangheta, was sentenced to life in prison in Italy in 2006 for a double murder, but escaped before his incarceration. He was finally arrested on February 2, 2023 in Saint-Etienne (Loire), where he worked in a pizzeria. After a series of twists and turns, French courts gave the green light to his repatriation to Italy earlier this year, but a Prime Ministerial decree has yet to be issued. In the meantime, his lawyer is organising a series of appeals in an attempt to secure his release.

The reasons for the decision
"Judicial supervision of Edgardo Greco, who has been detained for almost two years for nothing, would be more than sufficient (...) At his age and given his state of health, can he not benefit from the right to be forgotten?" David Metaxas told AFP. The Lyon Court of Appeal has just denied him this for the fourth time. "A measure of judicial supervision or house arrest under electronic surveillance would be completely insufficient to prevent the risk of being a fugitive mentioned, since Edgardo Greco opposes his extradition and has evaded his criminal responsibilities by living under a false identity for several decades," the decision explains. Edgardo Greco, considered "dangerous by Interpol", was arrested thanks to information sharing with the Italian Carabinieri as part of the I-Can project (Interpol cooperation against the 'Ndrangheta).
