New large cocaine catch in Vlissingen: more than 1.5 tons
Customs intercepted a shipment of 1575 kilos of cocaine during a regular inspection in the port of Vlissingen. This happened last Thursday and Friday. At the end of last week, more than 4.7 tons of cocaine were seized in Antwerp.

The drugs in Vlissingen were hidden in several pallets of fruit from Colombia. The final destination was an address in Germany.

The police and the Royal Marechaussee have provided support in securing the port area. The cocaine has now been collected and destroyed. No one has been arrested.

The Public Prosecution Service speaks of a street value of more than 118 million euros, which is the value of the drugs if they were cut and sold whole on the street in the Netherlands.

In an investigation by the federal judicial police in Brussels, 4.78 tons of cocaine were seized at the end of last week in the port of Antwerp. Eight suspects were arrested. The investigation focused on a criminal organization that imported drugs from South and Central America and Canada.

Authorities in the Dominican Republic announced Friday that they confiscated nearly 9.5 tons of cocaine, the largest drug seizure in the country’s history.

The $250 million worth of drugs were found nestled inside a banana shipment that arrived at the Caucedo port in the capital of Santo Domingo, the country’s most important seaport. The shipment had been sent from Guatemala and was destined for Belgium, said Carlos Devers, spokesman for the Dominican Republic’s Anti-Drug Agency.

Ten suspects have been detained, he said at a press conference.

Authorities so far this year have seized nearly 47 tons of drugs.

The second biggest seizure on record was reported in 2006, when officials found more than 5,680 pounds (2,580 kilograms) at the Caucedo port.

The Dominican Republic has long been considered a major drug transit point.

Another large cocaine catch in the Atlantic Ocean

More than 3,300 kilos of cocaine were seized in the Atlantic Ocean last Friday from a Venezuelan fishing vessel that was sailing towards Western Europe. This happened about 1,850 kilometres west of the Canary Islands. There was still more than 3.3 tonnes on board, but that was lost at sea.

Ten crew members were arrested on board. The cocaine blocks were packed in 110 bales, each weighing approximately 30 kilos.

The operation was led by the Spanish Public Prosecutor’s Office and carried out by the Spanish National Police, Customs, the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Portuguese Judicial Police and the Brazilian Federal Police.

The investigation began in mid-November, following a tip from the DEA that an international criminal organization was planning to transport a large quantity of cocaine across the Atlantic Ocean. The drugs were reportedly being transported on a Venezuelan-flagged fishing vessel that had likely departed from South America and was bound for Spain.
