According to a U.S. Defense Department report from October of last year, China had about 500 ICBM launchers and about 350 missiles.

It said Beijing has been constructing hundreds of new ICBM silos meant to increase the peacetime readiness of its nuclear force.

The U.S. military said last year it expects China to have more than 1,000 nuclear warheads by 2030.

China, which practices a "no first use" nuclear weapons policy, has about 500 nuclear warheads, up from 410 last year, according to the report.

High-ranking GRU officer shot dead in Moscow Oblast, Russian media reports

Nikita Klenkov, a deputy commander of a unit for Russia's military intelligence agency (GRU), was shot dead in Moscow Oblast by an unknown assailant, Russian media reported on Oct. 16.

Klenkov, 44, was reportedly the deputy commander of GRU unit 43292, which serves as training center for Special Operations Forces, the Moscow Times reported.

Russian Telegram channel Baza reported that Klenkov was shot at on the side of a road in the town of Melenki, east of Moscow. The assailant reportedly fire eight shots from the window of a car.

According to Russian state media outlet TASS, Klenkov "returned home a week ago" from Ukraine's front line, according to a GRU source.

Russian state media reported that an investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

The Kyiv Independent could not verify any of the reports in Russian state media.

It is currently unclear if the attack was intended as a politically-motivated assassination. Kyiv has not commented on the situation.

In July, another officer from Russia's GRU had his feet blown off in a car bomb attack in Moscow.

Kyiv denied any involvement in that attack. Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak told independent Russian media he believed there was "a malfunction with the gas equipment in the car."

In a major escalation, North Korea has reportedly sent nearly 10000 troops to Russia to aid its military efforts amid the war in Ukraine.

On Red Square this week, Muscovites had their picture taken with North Korean soldiers who were ready to go to the Ukrainian front. Apparently, the Russians see no objection to becoming buddies with the most miserable dictatorship in the world.


South Korea is certainly not happy that their northern neighbors are getting involved in the Ukraine conflict, especially not if dictator Kim Jong-un gets nuclear knowledge in return from Russia. That is why South Korea is scaling up its defense industry considerably. And the country was already no small fry militarily. South Koreans will also supply equipment and knowledge to Ukraine. Putin signs defense pact with North Korea

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a defense pact with North Korea on Saturday. Part of the military cooperation is that both countries will come to each other's aid if they are attacked. The treaty was ratified by the Russian parliament earlier this month.

Zelensky wants to end the war in Ukraine next year through diplomatic means

US warns of airstrike on Kiev, embassy closed

The US embassy in Ukraine is urging Americans to prepare for a major airstrike on Kiev. There are indications that such an attack is imminent this Wednesday. The embassy has been closed "as a precaution" and embassy staff have been ordered to find a safe place.

The conditions in which the mercenaries from Yemen are fighting are said to be appalling. “We are being bombed. There are mines, drones, we have to build bunkers. We don’t even get a five-minute break,” one of them told the Financial Times. One of his colleagues reportedly tried to commit suicide and was taken to hospital. In another message, the contact complained that they were not given winter clothing. Eleven Yemenis have since been able to return to Yemen, including Abdullah. Zelensky wants to end war with limited NATO membership areas controlled by Ukrainian army

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has suggested in an interview with Sky News that one option could be to grant NATO membership only to areas of his country that are controlled by the Ukrainian military.
