'Ndrangheta massacre, conviction annulled, appeal to be remade
Cassation ruling for carabinieri murders in Calabria
REGGIO CALABRIA , December 16, 2024, 10:45 p.m.

ANSA Editorial Staff

Annulment with referral of the sentence for the double homicide of the Carabinieri Antonino Fava and Vincenzo Garofalo, killed in an ambush on 18 January 1994 along the Salerno-Reggio Calabria motorway, in Scilla, and for the attacks at the end of 1993, against two other patrols of the force.

Thus concluded, before the Sixth Section of the Court of Cassation presided over by Pierluigi Di Stefano, the 'Ndrangheta massacre trial against the Brancaccio boss Giuseppe Graviano and Rocco Santo Filippone, believed to be from the Piromalli gang of Gioia Tauro, sentenced to life imprisonment in 2023 by the Court of Assizes of Appeal of Reggio Calabria.

'Ndrangheta in Preserre and the “shadow” of Gaetano Emanuele after 6 months on the run
With the restrictive measure having fallen, following the victory in the Supreme Court, the lieutenant of the clan of the same name could now make his presence felt
Published: 21/12/2024 – 19:09

VIBO VALENTIA A precautionary custody measure annulled and the possibility, therefore, to come forward after months of being on the run. This is the effect of the outcome of the long tug-of-war between the prosecution, defense and judges on the position of Gaetano Emanuele (born in 1975) considered the “regent” of the gang by virtue of his role as lieutenant in the absence of his brother Bruno, the real boss of the 'ndrangheta gang of the same name. Gaetano Emanuele, in fact, had been reached by an order of imprisonment signed by the investigating judge of the Court of Vibo Valentia, following the “Habanero” blitz of the Catanzaro District Anti-Mafia. At the time of the notification of the arrest, however, Emanuele's house was not there, causing him to disappear for exactly six months.

The “Ariola Massacre”
The investigation would have shed light – according to the prosecution – on the criminal dynamics that preceded the Ariola massacre, when on 25 October 2003 in the small hamlet of Gerocarne Francesco Gallace, Giovanni Gallace and Stefano Barilari were killed, while the only survivor was Antonio Chiera. Over 140 gunshots and an attack that represents the culmination of the feud between the two families who were fighting for criminal power. At stake, in fact, was the criminal control over the Preserre, the scene of the bloody clash between the Maiolo-Emanuele family and the Loielo family. Before the Habanero investigation for the “Ariola massacre” «there had been no arrests so far» was explained at a press conference on the morning of 21 June this year. The affair, in fact, had been brought to the attention of other investigations that concerned that territorial criminal context of clash between the different souls of the Maiolo 'ndrina criminal group.

The investigation
Gaetano Emanuele – assisted by lawyers Giuseppe Di Renzo and Alessandro Diddi – is being investigated for the murders of Francesco Gallace, Giovanni Gallace and Stefano Barillaro and for the attempted murder of Ilario Antonio Chiera, crimes committed on 25 October 2003, using 12-gauge shotguns fired at the car and then, when it stopped, the perpetrators approached and shot head-on. A dynamic reconstructed through the investigations carried out immediately and from the statements made by Ilario Antonio Chiera, who survived the ambush and called for help and described one of the perpetrators of the crime, while over time numerous collaborators of justice have made statements : Francesco Loielo, Rocco Oppedisano, Michele Ganino, Enzo Taverniti, Bartolomeo Arena, Luciano Oliva and Antonio Forastefano. The latter, in particular, had declared that he had learned from Angelo Maiolo - while he was a fugitive - that Gaetano Emanuele had also participated in the murder as a material executor.

"Not very credible" repentants
During the last hearing, the judges of the Court of Catanzaro fully accepted the thesis of the Supreme Court according to which, differently from what was held by the Review Judge, it cannot be considered that the statements made by Forastefano «are comparable to direct ones because they are self-incriminating confidences received directly from the material author of the fact». This is correct information «only with regard to what Angelo Maiolo narrated regarding his own responsibility, which he thus “confessed” to the collaborator, but it cannot be extended to the position of Gaetano Emanuele». The considerations of the other repentant, Oppedisano, were also taken into consideration. According to the Supreme Court, «the collaborator with regard to the intrinsic credibility of which the motivation of the contested provision is non-existent, reported a conversation that took place, moreover in generic terms, about a year before the murders were committed ». Once the custody order has fallen, therefore, Gaetano Emanuele could come back to life and spend Christmas with his loved ones. A hypothesis no longer suggestive. ( g.curcio@corrierecal.it )

THE MINUTES
'Ndrangheta, the tales of drug broker Pasquino: the drugs of Assisi and the “advice” of Rocco Morabito
Statements released in Brazil: "I wanted to take on a load, but the laws had changed". The journeys of cocaine under the keel of ships
Published: 23/12/2024 – 7:00

TURIN «The properties that the Assisi had in Brazil were procured for them by the “Turk”, the one who lived in the attic above us in Praia Grande (…) he was missing some fingers and that’s why we also called him Manuzza. He’s the one who controlled the cocaine that we had in the apartments downstairs and in any case he provided us with assistance in various respects». «Certain houses were registered in the name of Paula Assisi» Vincenzo Pasquino continues. «Others were registered in the name of other people, including, I think, some of Paula’s relatives. Paula’s father was in politics, he had interests in a company that dealt with speed cameras in the state of San Paolo». Vincenzo Pasquino, born in 1990, born and raised in Turin, but considered a leading member of the ‘ndrangheta , told the Brazilian authorities the details . Before his extradition, in fact, Pasquino began to provide a series of details related to drug trafficking in the green and gold land.

"I had to shoulder a burden but the law had changed"
In the course of his stories, drug broker Pasquino also mentions an event linked to the Assisi family. «(…) I tried to take responsibility for the load to exonerate the Assisi family, it was an agreement between me and them. Patrick told me “take responsibility for the crime, confess, because here in Brazil even if they sentence you to 20 years, you do 3 and then go on semi-liberty, I’ll give you a dropped load and you take it on”. The advantage for me would have been not to be extradited to Italy and to let the Italian precautionary measure phase run out». A solution, however, rejected by “U Tamunga”. «Rocco Morabito, however, advised me against doing this because the law had changed in Brazil and they had increased the penalties for drug trafficking crimes. So I only took responsibility for the material seized in the Assisi family’s apartment in Praia Grande at the time of their arrest…».

Cocaine towards Gioia Tauro and Genoa
Pasquino then illustrated the details of drug trafficking from Brazil to Italy. «I was the first to use the technique of tying cocaine under the keel of ships departing from Paranaguá, using some Colombian divers, three to be precise, that I had brought. They were the ones who hid the merchandise behind the grates of the submerged water intakes of the ships (…) the first time from Paranaguá we did a test with 17 kg that turned out to work and the merchandise reached its destination in Gioia Tauro». Subsequently «we made a load of 110 kg or maybe 140 destined for Genoa, but since it was not possible to extract it due to the presence of the Police, they were then unloaded in Gioia Tauro. After this load we sent another 39 kg to the port of Genoa, but in this case the divers in charge of the exit found the rope cut so I think it was stolen», Vincenzo Pasquino continues. It was «Mario Palamara who accused me of having stolen the goods, but it would have made no sense because I would then have had to answer for it to the Brazilian suppliers» . criminal dynamics
'Ndrangheta, extortion (even) at Christmas. A “flower” and a “thought” worth thousands of euros
The clan's associates demand payment and impose - even with threats - extortion on Calabrian traders and entrepreneurs
Published: 25/12/2024 – 13:03

COSENZA Someone asks for a “ thought ”, someone else for a “ flower ”. Terms used in criminal jargon to indicate an evidently illicit giving of money. In courtrooms, during trials, and in investigation papers under the heading of extortion, some cryptic words related to the payment of undue taxes find space. The extortion imposed on poor entrepreneurs, threatened, harassed, hit by the arrogance of the lord on duty. The bosses give the orders and the henchmen and soldiers carry them out. A custom that is revealed as such at all latitudes, there is no province in Calabria where the extortion racket is not exercised, resorting – if necessary – to strong measures. And Christmas, so the other holiday periods become a tempting opportunity to request a larger tranche from traders: up to 5,000 euros one-off at Easter, Ferragosto and precisely during the Christmas period when – in theory – takings should increase.

The flower at “Recovery”
One of the most recent investigations by the Catanzaro DDA to combat the mala bruzia is no exception. In the operation codenamed “ Recovery ”, the dialogues exchanged via text messages between two suspects are reported. Between 25 and 26 March 2021, there is talk of an event that occurred in the municipality of Casali del Manco , following the numerous acts of intimidation carried out, the two interlocutors focus on the “response to an extortion request, specifying that otherwise, they would have provided a new “ thought ”, that is, with further acts of intimidation against companies that had shown themselves reluctant to respond to such a request ”.

The “gift” to Cutro
A disturbing cross-section also emerges in another investigation by the Catanzaro District Anti-Mafia Directorate and which involved the Cutro area. Investigations that led to the arrest of five individuals, considered by the prosecution to be representatives of the local 'ndrangheta. It is December 13, 2023, a man approaches the alleged victim on board a dark-colored Volkswagen. The person who allegedly received the request for money tells the police everything. "After getting out - confesses the victim - he approached me and told me that regardless of my available liquidity, he needed the gift, especially in proximity to the Christmas holidays, so he firmly told me that he necessarily had to return this gift by Christmas Day no later than" . On the morning of January 11, 2024, the victim goes to the Police Headquarters, in Crotone, and provides all the details of the incident.

Tax imposed on schools too
Also emblematic is an episode that ended up in the “ Reset ” investigation. On December 19, the preliminary hearing judge Fabiana Giacchetti issued the sentence against the defendants who chose the abbreviated procedure (the convictions and acquittals). According to the prosecution, some defendants linked to one of the Cosenza clans forced two people “members of a private school” in Cosenza “to hand over to them the bills of exchange relating to the credit of 2,900 euros claimed by the injured parties” against another person “as a share of the overall extortion request consisting of: 4,000 euros per year, to be paid in two separate installments – with due dates at Christmas and Easter – and a further “gift” not better defined ”. In the long list of episodes noted by the investigators and contested to the defendants, there is no shortage of duties imposed on pizzerias and restaurants, some of which were forced to cut from the "takings" item about 500 euros, at Christmas, Easter and Ferragosto. From a small village on a hill in the Italian region of Calabria, two journalists set out to find the link between the Italian mafia and the Netherlands. Why is the Netherlands so popular with the powerful crime syndicate Ndrangheta? And how is it that even the smaller, personal stories that Gabriella Adèr and Sanne de Boer encounter in Italy always lead to the Netherlands?

the rules of crime
"Without shooting everything changed". The 'ndrangheta, the tripartite system and the criminal consortium
Rituals and gifts end up in the attic. Calabria remains the mother country, but in Milan the underworld imposes itself with the force of a multi-headed monster
Published: 26/12/2024 – 7:00

MILAN The image is no longer that of the illiterate shepherd with a flat cap and a rifle, but of a distinguished man, capable of relating to the assiduous frequenters of the control rooms and the salons of power, "armed" with a briefcase full of cash. The mafia has changed, the 'ndrangheta is evolving. Extortion demands under threat and pressure are gradually being replaced by the "impositions" of raw materials or other goods sold by apparently clean companies and corporations, gravitating in the galaxy of the clans.

Conquering Milan
It does not seem absurd, therefore, difficult to imagine how and why the interests and appetites of the Calabrian mafia have rapidly moved to the North, especially to Milan: the capital of finance. " Without gunfire, everything has changed ," says someone intercepted in a recent investigation into mafia organizations in Lombardy. The phrase is emblematic, and shows how public relations have gradually replaced rifles and pistols, words and not blood to do business and increase the availability of illicit money. "Fictitious registrations are the crimes that we find most frequently in investigations, they have taken the place of extortion," Alessandra Dolci , head of the Milan DDA, tells Avvenire . A circumstance that is confirmed by the charges raised in the investigations and aimed at alleged members of mafia-style criminal associations: bankruptcy, tax fraud, fraud against the state."

The tripartite model
Dolci illustrates the details referred to and referable to the new deal imposed by organized crime. « It is a tripartite model that sees the presence of a medium-large sized client company, a filter company that acquires the contract and, at the base, a series of production and work cooperatives that are mere containers of manpower, remain alive for no more than two or three years and, above all, are total tax evaders». The model is based on the issuing of false invoices and for non-existent transactions, through the transfer of «fictitious credits ».

The rules of the game change, the 'ndrine change
That criminal world governed by laws imposed through violence no longer exists. The Milan prosecutor confirms. « The most classic manifestations of being a member of the mafia have almost disappeared: the meals, the affiliation rituals, the conferral of dowries (…) the use of violence has become residual, but, be careful, this does not mean that a genetic mutation is taking place in the 'ndrangheta that leads it back to a phenomenon of economic deviance. The structure remains unchanged, with the connection between the Lombard localities and Calabria ». The native land remains the nerve centre of business, the central government of the division of business and resolution of disputes. And the Calabrian localities of reference, «are always the same: Platì, San Luca, Africo (the “Mountain”), Rosarno, Gioia Tauro (the Plain) », Dolci underlines to Avvenire .

The Multi-Headed Monster
The blows dealt by the frequent and numerous operations represent a brake on the expansion of the 'ndrine: capable however of regenerating themselves. The image offered by “ Hydra ”, the multi-headed monster, is emblematic. It was chosen as the code name for one of the most important investigative activities concluded in Northern Italy, where «a new phenomenon was recorded: a consortium between Cosa Nostra, Camorra and 'ndrangheta ». A non-belligerence pact sanctioned between criminal leaders and summarized in an extract of a wiretap that ended up in the investigation documents. « We had everything authorized by Milan…passing through Calabria, Naples ». criminal profiles
'Ndrangheta Killer Bellantoni Among Europe's Most Wanted: He's Been a Fugitive Since 1971
The updated list on the Enfast “EU Most Wanted” website. The 80-year-old Calabrian, known as Mburia, is believed to be an affiliate of the Piromalli clan

ROME Giovanni Motisi, Domenico Bellantoni, Vincenzo Parisi and Renato Cinquegranella . There are four Italians included in the list of the 5 7 most wanted by the European police forces as responsible for murder . “They have blood on their hands” is written on the EU Most Wanted website of Enfast, the European network of fugitive active search teams, a service active in the search for fugitives supported by Europol: on the homepage, mug shots, names and an invitation to citizens to contact the authorities promptly if they recognize someone.
Among our fellow countrymen, the best-known name is that of Giovanni Motisi from Palermo , 66 years old on January 1, missing since 1998. Known by the nickname 'u pacchiuni, the fat one, a leading figure of Cosa Nostra, after the capture of Matteo Messina Denaro he is considered by many to be the new head of the organization. Toto' Riina's trusted killer , according to the statements of a repentant, accused of murder and massacre, has a life sentence to serve. In 1999, during the search of his villa in Palermo, a thick correspondence between him and his wife came to light, notes delivered by trusted "postmen" together with clothes and gifts. And it is from the same year that he appeared for the last time in Sicily, at his daughter's birthday party: in the photos found several years later, the walls covered with white sheets stand out so as not to be recognized as the place. Since then, nothing more or almost nothing enough to fuel the suspicion - recurrent in large fugitives - that Motisi may be dead. The other hypothesis is that he sought, and found, refuge in France. To facilitate the search, the Police released a new identikit in April, the result of the reworking of the physiognomy of the face with the "Age progression" system.
Domenico Bellantoni, 80, known as Mburia, also sentenced to life imprisonment, is a 'ndrangheta killer, affiliated with the Piromalli clan from Reggio, who has been a fugitive since 1971. Europol describes him as "a dangerous and potentially armed individual". His CV includes, among other things, the attempted murder by gunshots of Rocco Malvaso and the murder of Francesco Tocco. Taking advantage of his criminal profile, he is also said to have induced a minor to prostitute herself in Rosarno.
Vincenzo Parisi, 75, also has a life sentence to serve, linked to the "Foggia mafia", known for its ruthlessness: with two accomplices, he lured Filippo Russo and Franco Cavazzuti into a trap and killed them "for trivial reasons" with shots from a .38 caliber pistol. According to Europol, to avoid detection and arrest he used a stolen and falsified identity card.
Renato Cinquegranella, a 75-year-old Neapolitan, has practically disappeared since 2002.Wanted for mafia-style criminal association, complicity in murder, extortion and other charges, he was originally linked to the “Nuova famiglia”, historic rivals of Raffaele Cutolo’s Nuova Camorra Organizzata: an old grainy black and white photo of him remains in the archives, with advanced baldness, glasses, a black moustache and a gaze fixed on the lens. A face like many others, yet his name appears in the judicial chronicles of two of the crimes that most shook Naples: the murder of Giacomo Frattini, alias Bambulella, a soldier of the NCO, tortured, killed and dismembered in January 1982, and the massacre of the head of the Mobile Antonio Ammaturo and his driver, Pasquale Paola, “signed” in July of the same year by the Red Brigades. An episode that confirmed the existence of a “wicked pact” between the terrorists and the area bosses of the Camorra in central Naples. Since December 2018, searches have been launched internationally, but so far without results. The Court of Cassation confirmed his life sentence in May 2014. (AGI)

“offshoot” process
'Ndrangheta, the investigations on the clans in Rome and the "tip-off" of the unfaithful financier: «There's something big going on with the Calabrians here»
The leak, Antonio Carzo's fears and the transfer to Calabria. "They would like to possibly destroy our family"
Published: 05/11/2024 – 7:01

ROME A leak of information about the investigations that the Carabinieri were conducting on the Alvaro 'ndrangheta clan active in Rome. The episode, which emerges through two conversations intercepted in February 2018 between the leading figures arrested during the “Propaggine” operation, are an element of analysis in a memorandum of the Attorney General filed in the appeal trial. A leak for which, according to the Prosecutor, the role of the boss Pasquale Vitalone, who allegedly warned Antonio Carzo, would have been central.

The unfaithful financier and the leak
"Now Pasquale told me... this fact here too... the situation a little... I don't know if he told you... who is right here in Rome... yes... yes... that the... GIC.. (phonetic)... told him... they went today... maybe he hasn't told you yet because they went today... they told him there's something big with the Calabrians here..." . On February 10, 2018, Antonio Carzo reported to Giulio Versace that he had been warned of the existence of an investigation into the members of the Alvaro gang based in Lazio , which would have led to numerous arrests. The "mole", the source of the leak, was apparently a soldier from the Gico of the Guardia di Finanza who, according to what was reconstructed by the Prosecutor's Office through the intercepted conversations, had precise information on the investigation by the Rome DDA: " He says something big in Rome... he says... that it's you other Calabrians... exactly... you other ones exactly... Pasquale told me... I don't know... for me... all of you other ones". Carzo confides in Versace. «Carzo – the Prosecutor's Office emphasizes – in reporting his fears regarding the individuals who could have been involved in the investigation, drew up a summary organizational chart of the Rome club , which included not only the Vitalone-Versaces, but also Antonio Carzo himself, Alvaro Vincenzo, the Palamaras and all the other members of what he defines as “our team” : «He says… that “it's you other Calabrians…exactly…you other ones exactly”… and Pasquale also thought of me (Antonio Carzo)…of Vincenzo…all these others of our team…he says:… “us other ones…all those who are…a big deal”…he said…that they're arresting you…they're arresting Vincenzo… arrested or these Palamaras» .

Antonio Carzo's fears and the transfer to Calabria
« But I don't know how the hell they did it... well, I have the recommendation from down there... » .Carzo also states, expressing how he couldn't understand how the investigators had acquired evidence against him and referred to the fact that he had received the recommendation "from down there", that is, the authorization from the Province to set up the premises in Rome. « Precisely for this reason, - we read in the memo - evidently, Carzo believed that the investigators could have reconstructed his role, that is, having ascertained the authorization he had received from the Calabrian parent company to set up the premises in Rome ». And fearing an imminent operation, Carzo had expressed the idea of ??making himself untraceable by going abroad once the special surveillance was over. Subsequently, however, « considering that the surveillance was followed by the application of the security measure,he had decided to move to Calabria in order to avoid involvement in the operation that would have been carried out in Rome » . ( “ Our area…our family in particular they would like to possibly destroy it ”) .(m.ripolo@corrierecal.it)

the minutes
'Ndrangheta and ultras, the “clash” between the fans and the arrival of Bellocco. Beretta: «He used his mafia weight»
The former Nord player told prosecutors about his relationship with the “Hammers”. «Antonio told him “you have to move”»
Published: 12/30/2024 – 11:19

MILAN "When Vittorio died, they showed up at Debora's house and took the group's cash, as if they were the ones in charge. We show up with Marco at this Mimmo's house, and Mimmo attacks Marco (...) something comes out that we can't get to the bottom of. So Marco decides to call Antonio Bellocco and we organize..." Andrea Beretta, the now ex-leader of the Inter ultras, is in full flood in front of the prosecutors of the Milan DDA. Dozens and dozens of pages of reports that are helping to unravel shadows and doubts about the management of the San Siro curves, but also about the relationships of organized fans with crime and, in particular, with the Calabrian 'ndrangheta.

The statements
Accused of the murder of Antonio Bellocco, the 1988 class killed last September in Cernusco sul Naviglio, “Berro” in the statements made on November 22, 2024 spoke, among other things, of the relationships with the “Hammers” and the interference of the scion of the 'ndrangheta clan. «(…) Me, Marco, Antonio, there were two friends of Marco, from Carugate, who were from that area, who had come up for work and then came back down, I don't remember (…) I called him the hunter, because he had a hat and always went around with boots like mountain boots, and another guy who had to do with (…), the chocolate guy, they worked for him… we have this meeting and in my opinion the vehicle that brought Antonio are these two (…) they say “there could be this person who could solve your problem”. When Antonio goes up he says that “you have to say that you and I already worked together, that we were already together in this story about the stadium, I was a secret partner, when we go to Mimmo” (…)».

The “weight” of Totò Bellocco
«Because then afterwards we went to Mimmo… to make our complaints (…) “Look, we are behind it”, Antonio told him, “We already know each other with Andrea”, I had never seen him in my life… “Andrea is here, we have known him for a long time, you have to move” and in that case we withdrew all the banners, right? Antonio takes over, Antonio takes over precisely because of the Hammer issue (…)».
As Beretta recounted, therefore, «Antonio (Bellocco ed.) used his weight to approach this guy… he told him “You have to move…”». And when asked if by chance Bellocco had asserted his “mafia-ness”, Beretta replied: «Yes». According to the former Inter ultra leader, however, the other side would not have given up so easily, on the contrary. «It is always a continuation, they continue to call people, their acquaintances, this Mimmo continues to call people, someone always shows up…». And among these “acquaintances” there would be other Calabrian individuals. «(…) through this Mimmo Bosa, he has been in prison, he has these acquaintances in the world of Calabrians, every now and then maybe a character who knew Antonio, the cousin, would pop up, “No, we have to settle down, you have to take us into consideration”, understood?».

The “other” Calabrians
And when asked by prosecutor Dolci whether, in fact, “Mimmo Hammer” was close to some Calabrian individual, the ultra replied: «(…) Morabito, Mancuso, De Stefano, he knows them all, he knows everyone, you understand? (…) they came to the sports center to threaten me, this old Calabrian who I think was part of the Mancuso or Morabito family, and he came with this (…) and with the brother-in-law of (…) to the sports center to put pressure on me, right?». And he also explained his reasons to the prosecutors: «Because they said “You didn't help 'Mimmo Hammer', prisoner, you didn't help him, you didn't support him”. And I said, “But this guy wasn’t arrested for stadium stuff, he was arrested for his own business” (…) I personally gave a contribution, it’s not like I can take the money from the coffers, since he was arrested for going to do his own business (…) I told him, “Look, the Irriducibili are the only group that does merchandising and they don’t pay anything into the coffers of the Curva Nord, this agreement was made precisely to help your leader”». And when asked by the prosecutor Storari about how much he actually donated, Beretta replied: “I gave him 50, 100, maybe when I saw people near him, Pedro like that, “Hey, that’s 50 euros for…”, 100 euros”. the analysis
Reset, Imposition, Epicenter: the weakened 'ndrangheta and the clans "decapitated" by the sentences
In total, thousands of years of prison inflicted on the Calabrian clans. In 2024, all the provinces will be affected, as well as the locals who “emigrated” to the North
Published: 12/31/2024 – 18:10

LAMEZIA TERME More repentants, more investigations, more convictions. A weakened 'ndrangheta, decapitated at the top by the mega-operations conducted by the Calabrian prosecutors, then transformed into trials that are advancing rapidly in the courtrooms. Reset, Costa Pulita, Imponimento, Epicentro are just some of the proceedings against Calabrian organised crime that have reached sentencing this year. While on the one hand there are dozens of acquittals, on the other there are thousands of years of prison in total inflicted on the main exponents of the 'ndrine. A cycle of heavy sentences that began last year, when, among other things, the first ruling of the Rinascita Scott maxi-trial arrived. In the now unusable bunker courtroom of Lamezia Terme over 207 people were convicted, to which are added the 67 of the abbreviated trial: numbers that have effectively paralysed and weakened the 'ndrangheta of Vibo Valentia.

From Costa Pulita to Imponimento
A trend that continued in 2024. New informants, including the Bonavota killer Francesco Fortuna, new sentences and new convictions. The province of Vibo Valentia is awaiting the verdict of the maxi-trial that includes Maestrale, Olimpo and Imperium with approximately 285 defendants and the Accorinti, Mancuso and La Rosa clans on trial. In the meantime, two other trials have come to a conclusion. Last March 13, at the court of Vibo Valentia, the verdict was pronounced in the Costa Pulita trial , the investigation that began way back in 2016 against the interests of organized crime along the Costa degli Dei. 25 sentences , including that of Pantaleone “Scarpuni” Mancuso to 13 years and Pasquale Quaranta to 10 years, while the former councilor of Briatico was sentenced to 9 years in prison. The Petrolmafie trial, on the other hand, shed light on the interests in the oil business of the Vibo Valentia clans , whose first degree of the ordinary trial reached a verdict in November 2023, while this year the appeal verdict arrived for those who chose the abbreviated trial. Out of 21 defendants, 14 sentences for a total of about 60 years in prison.

Imposition and sentences in the Catanzaro area
The sentence of the Imponimento trial dates back to June . The operation against the Anello-Fruci gang, which operates on the border between Filadelfia and Lamezia Terme, began on July 21, 2020, while the ruling by the judges for the ordinary trial came last June 19: 48 convictions, including 20 years for the alleged boss Rocco Anello , against 25 between prescriptions and acquittals, including the "heavy" ones for the brothers Francescantonio and Emanuele Stillitani. The appeal sentence for the abbreviated trial came in September, with 23 convictions and 20 acquittals . A total of 71 convictions with the judges who, in the recently published reasons, certify the operation of the 'ndrina Anello-Fruci from 2004 onwards. In the Catanzaro area, instead, the ruling against the “Zingari” clan arrived, with the preliminary hearing judge who condemned 42 defendants , with only 4 acquittals. For those who are considered at the top of the Catanzaro clan Bevilacqua – Passalacqua, sentences of 20 years each.

Reset: the Cosentino maxi-trial
However, it is in the Cosenza area that the heaviest and most important sentence has arrived: 82 convictions in the abbreviated rite of the Reset trial against the 'ndrangheta of the province of Bruzia. Over ten centuries of punishment inflicted, including 20 years for Francesco Patitucci, considered to be at the top of the Cosenza organized crime, and 20 for the former informer Roberto Porcaro. Among the 37 acquittals, that of the councilor of the municipality of Cosenza Francesco De Cicco stands out , welcomed with enthusiasm (with a toast) also by the mayor Franz Caruso. The same sentence also for some members of the "Zingari" clan including Antonio, Luigi and Marco Abbruzzese. Heavy sentences also in the Reggio area, with the " Epicentro " trial which brings together the "Malefix", "Metameria" and "Nuovo Corso" investigations against the De Stefano clan. There are 44 convictions on appeal in the abbreviated procedure, with a sentence arrived on July 18, while there are 10 in the ordinary procedure with the first degree ruling arrived last September 6.

The “emigrated” 'ndrangheta
Emblematic are the sentences outside the region, which certify the now consolidated presence of the 'ndrangheta beyond the borders of Calabria. Piedmont, Lombardy, Valle d'Aosta and Lazio are some of the regions where sentences have been handed down against the Calabrian criminality that emigrated to the rest of Italy. Like the local 'ndrangheta that settled in Anzio and Nettuno, the two towns in Lazio whose municipalities were dissolved due to 'ndrangheta infiltration. Last December 7, sentences of over 125 years in prison arrived, including those of the two alleged leaders Giacomo Madaffari and Davide Perronace, to 28 and 20 years respectively. A historic sentence also arrived in Umbria, with approximately 277 years of sentences for 30 defendants in the "Quarto passo" trial which certified the presence of the 'ndrine, in particular with roots in Cirò, in the region. The “equal” collaboration between the PCC and the 'ndrangheta, Pasquino: «Turin, San Luca and Guardavalle a single group»
The Turin drug broker linked to the Calabrian 'ndrine explained the details in Brazil. «The Nirta wanted to demonstrate their presence outside»
Published: 02/01/2025 – 6:57

LAMEZIA TERME «Before the “Cerbero” operation, therefore in the summer of 2019, we met several times in San Paolo with the PCC groups, with representatives of the various families who asked to work with them. I was the one who maintained contact with the PCC». It is the drug broker Vincenzo Pasquino, born in Turin in 1990, closely linked to the Calabrian 'ndrangheta , who spoke to the Brazilian judicial authorities before his extradition to Italy and the beginning of his collaboration with justice. Statements attached to the documents of the “Samba” investigation by the Turin Anti-Mafia District.

Those of San Luca and Brazil
«The relationship between my group and the Nirta of San Luca – Pasquino continued – began in 2017 because they needed a “climb” from the ports of Brazil», because until then they «had only imported from Buenos Aires (where they had restaurants, including one called “San Luca” I think near the casino and one, whose name I don’t remember, near the Town Hall)» , Pasquino continued. After the break between us and the platioti, «Michelangelo Versaci and Patrik Assisi asked us to find serious people to work with. It is at this moment, as I have already explained, that the relationship with the Nirta group began», the broker explained. As already said, «in 2018 Sebastiano Giampaolo (father of Antonio) came to Brazil, in agreement with Ivano Piperissa called “head” and Giuseppe Vitale called “the tightwad”, to verify the situation following the seizure of some loads of cocaine».

READ ALSO: 'Ndrangheta, Pasquino's revelations: «Those from San Luca were not as reliable as the platioti»
The meeting with the CCP
And, as Vincenzo Pasquino also recounts, «it is at this moment that a meeting was organized in San Paolo to reach an agreement with the PCC». At the end of the meeting it was then decided to start a collaboration on equal terms between the PCC and the San Luca group, «whereby each financed 50% of the batch of cocaine to be imported into Italy», explained Pasquino whose task «was to guarantee the passage of money». Therefore «50% of the PCC cocaine that arrived in Gioia Tauro was sold by the San Luca group, mostly in northern Italy and Sicily, and by us in Turin. The PCC sold us the cocaine at 5,000/5,500 euros per kg, which became 7,500/7,000 euros per kg with the “climb” price». As explained by Pasquino, therefore, the part of the PCC to be sold in Italy «had the minimum agreed price between 23,000 and 25,000 euros».

A single “group”
After the San Paolo meeting, a single organization was created, composed of the Turin group, the Guardavalle group and the San Luca group. "All together we took care of the recovery of the drugs from the port of Gioia Tauro and the subsequent sale", said the broker Pasquino, "we in Turin were more inclined to sell the cocaine in bulk directly at the port, so as to avoid the risk of seizure" while the San Luca group and in particular Stefano Nirta "did not accept to sell the drugs upon arrival, having an interest in receiving and selling them personally also in Northern Italy, where they had a branch". Because, as explained by the drug broker, the San Luca group "intended to demonstrate their presence externally and the traceability of the cocaine that was being sold to them". the decision
'Ndrangheta, boss Pantaleone Mancuso “Scarpuni” remains in prison
Involved in the DDA's "Portosalvo" investigation, he is accused of being the instigator of the murder of Davide Fortuna
Published: 02/01/2025 – 19:33

VIBO VALENTIA Pantaleone Mancuso “Scarpuni”, the boss of the 'ndrangheta of Limbadi and Nicotera Marina, remains in prison. He was arrested during the raid by the Catanzaro DDA “Porto Salvo” last April. The Court of Cassation rejected the appeal for the annulment of the measure of the Catanzaro Review Court which had already confirmed that of the investigating judge of the Vibo Tribunal. The 63-year-old boss is accused of being the instigator of the murder of Davide Fortuna, killed on the beach in Vibo Marina on the afternoon of 6 July 2012 in front of his family, as part of the mafia war between the Piscopisani clan and the Patania clan of Stefanaconi, supported by the boss Mancuso himself. “Scarpuni” Mancuso is already serving other life sentences for the murder of Francesco Scrugli and the wounding of Raffaele Moscato and Rosario Battaglia, which occurred in March 2012 in Vibo Marina.

imposition process
'Ndrangheta, the brothers who "kept the weapons" for the gang and the relationship with Tommaso Anello
Pasquale and Vincenzo Rondinelli were sentenced to 25 and 17 years in prison. The first accused of also being a "distributor" of the drug
Published: 03/01/2025 – 6:29

VIBO VALENTIA «Inside both gangs» and «fully aware of facilitating» the Anello-Fruci 'ndrina, thus strengthening its «economic strength, criminal prestige and operational capacity in the territory». With these motivations, recently made public, the judges of the Court of Vibo Valentia sentenced Pasquale Rondinelli to 25 years in prison with a “discount” of only one year on the request of the DDA. The sentence of the Imponimento trial against the Anello-Fruci gang dates back to June 18, with a pronouncement of 48 convictions and 25 acquittals, including those of the Stillitani brothers. However, the 44-year-old from Filadelfia received a heavy sentence. Considered by investigators to be a « distributor » of drugs on behalf of the clan and accused of possession of weapons at the disposal of the 'ndrina, Rondinelli is also accused of playing a role in some extortions against hotel accommodation facilities. Vincenzo Rondinelli, Pasquale's brother, and considered, together with him, the "custodian of weapons" for the gang, was sentenced to 17 years .

The guardian role
All of this, according to investigators, in favor of the Anello-Fruci 'ndrina. The judges believe the accusations to be "proven" both by wiretaps and by the statements of justice collaborator Francesco Michienzi. His statements would demonstrate "the contribution provided to the gang by the defendant" Pasquale Rondinelli. First of all, in the role of guard of a well-known tourist facility in the area , a position that "could be useful for managing the gang's business". From the reconstruction emerges "the Anello's desire to include their associate Rondinelli in the staff of the guardhouse of the tourist village", despite Michienzi's opposition to the proposal. Hirings that would have been wanted and managed by the 'ndrina also according to the repentant Giuseppe Comito. The defendant, according to the repentant, would have already been known within the association "precisely because he managed the gang's weapons".

The weapons entrusted to the Rondinelli brothers
A role he allegedly had together with his brother Vincenzo. «They guarded them (the Rondinellis, ed.), we knew they guarded them behind the house because they had a thick wood with avenues at their disposal» Michienzi reported. « They modified the weapons, they were also very good at it because I remember that in some cases they managed to make pistols that sold the famous blank guns, they transformed them into real weapons ». Pasquale Rondinelli also allegedly had a role in drug dealing on behalf of the clan. According to the judges «the connection between Rondinelli and Tommaso Anello has incontrovertibly emerged», based on some meetings recorded by the investigators. Until the arrest in 2017 in which Rondinelli was found with drugs and weapons. For the judges, the intercepted conversation between the Anellos is also relevant, in which « the disappointment and agitation of the conversationalists are evident, confirming the fact that the search, the arrest of Rondinelli and the seizure of weapons and drugs worried Tommaso Anello ». According to the panel, the theory that the defendant worked independently must be rejected, but "the dynamic and important role of the defendant within the criminal organization, as a distributor of narcotic substances, is certain". The two hierarchies and the secret level of the 'ndrangheta. The repentant tells of the power of the deceased boss Rocco Molè: «He was a freemason»
In Gioia Tauro, the power of the boss killed in 2008. Encrypted phones to talk about weapons and drugs: «Photos and container numbers arrived»
Published: 04/01/2025 – 11:16

GIOIA TAURO He speaks of "two hierarchies" within the 'ndrangheta, of "a secret level" and of the figure of Rocco Molè described as "a freemason" and a "high-level" person, the clan leader of the gang of the same name killed in an ambush on February 1, 2008. A murder that represents a watershed in the criminal history of the Piana di Gioia Tauro where the Piromallis also dictate the rules.
"I had a filial relationship with Molè and I maintained a reverential fear towards him, I addressed him formally even if he told me to address him informally. Every time they invited me to their house I went, even if, especially from 2006 to 2008, the relationship had intensified and I often found myself at their house omitted ". The story comes from the collaborator of justice Domenico Ficarra, known as “Corona”, born in 1984 , who during the interrogations before the magistrates of the anti-mafia prosecutors of Reggio Calabria and Milan traces a detailed description of the figure of Molè senior and the relationships he had woven despite never having been “baptized”. Ficarra, who defines himself as “always at the disposal of the Molè family” of Gioia Tauro, tells the prosecutors that he knew “Rocco Molè, killed in 2008, very well” and that he was “at his complete disposal”. “Until 2008 and, in particular, until the murder of Rocco Molè, I lived in Gioia Tauro near the Molè family and enjoyed their complete trust”, says the collaborator of justice who specifies that he is not “formally affiliated” with the 'ndrangheta “in the sense that I did not participate in an affiliation rite, but I have always grown up in the Molè family ”.

The two hierarchies in the 'ndrangheta and the reserved level
" There are two hierarchies , in what sense, how do I know? I've lived them, right? So, once, when I was maybe still little, when I didn't go out until I was thirteen, fourteen, so years old, because up until I was fifteen years old I didn't go out to these places here, maybe the 'ndrangheta existed, the one of a certain level, the affiliation, the., the cutting off of the finger...". "Then when I went out to these., these people, working for them too, right?, eh., I was in the service of Rocco Molè the great, I was always there from morning to night, eh., that thing didn't exist anymore, like when I moved...". And regarding the fact that, according to the collaborator, there are two hierarchies within the 'ndrangheta, at the request of the prosecutors Ficarra becomes even more specific: « Those who are worth less, who., who., who count for little, who are still left with the kid and co., with the food and with the thing they do these things here, the baptism eh., the families of a certain level, like Piromalli, like Mole, like Pesce, like Bellocco, the real bosses that I have frequented do not have , in this last period, the new hierarchies, the new recruits, they do not use this thing here».
Not only hierarchies, but also a reserved level: « I know that there was also a reserved level of the 'ndrangheta, I knew that Rocco Molè was a freemason, he was a high-level person , he had weapons found omitted by putting weapons in a place and anonymously calling a police station to have them found. Rocco had received permission to go to Rome in 2006 omitted ", says Ficarra.

Encrypted Phones to Talk About Guns and Drugs
During the interrogations, the collaborator of justice talks about the gang's business, the trafficking from the port of Gioia Tauro and the modus operandi of Molè himself. In particular, Ficarra, who says he delivered 21 encrypted cell phones to Gioia Tauro that he had collected from his mother's house by the clan leader himself, states: «I saw Rocco Molè use these phones many times, in practice he used them 24 hours a day to chat, and he only used them to talk about drugs and weapons , as I had the opportunity to personally see him using them; as I had the opportunity to see, photos of the drugs and container numbers as well as photos of weapons arrived . He used these phones with the name "monster" , omitted Rocco chatted, and sometimes sent and received voice messages». An all-round power, that of Rocco Molè, however destined to end. It culminated with an ambush in full mafia style on February 1, 2008. (m.ripolo@corrierecal.it)

'Ndrangheta, Rosario Barbaro's step back: «I am no longer a collaborator of justice»
Member of the Papalia clan, born in 1972, Rosi Barbaro had been repentant since 2021. The announcement in a manuscript
Published: 01/05/2025 – 20:32

LAMEZIA TERME «I wish to communicate that I am no longer a collaborator of justice». This is the surprise announcement by Rosario Barbaro (class of '72) entrusted to a manuscript released by his lawyer. A piece of news destined to shake up the criminal circles linked to the Calabrian 'ndrangheta. Barbaro, in fact, is believed to be a member of the Papalia clan, the most powerful gang active in northern Italy, originally from Platì and linked to the Barbaro family. His collaboration began in June 2021 with the DDA of Milan , the prosecutors Stefano Ammendola and Paolo Storari, coordinated by the additional Alessandra Dolci. Rosario Barbaro, moreover, is married to Serafina Papalia, daughter of the superboss Rocco Papalia , now free after almost 30 years in prison and resident in Buccinasco, the "Platì of the north". In the first reports, the class of '72 known as "Rosi" had spoken of his relationships with the Maiolo family. «Until my imprisonment I had the dowry of picciotto inside the 'Ndrangheta club of Corsico-Buccinasco. The 'Ndrangheta club was blocked because there had been some problems in Calabria. When I got out of prison I committed some crimes but not necessarily linked to my inclusion in the aforementioned club. In Calabria there had been the disappearance of Pasqualino Marando and the two Trimboli, our fellow villagers, reason for which everyone tried to remain more private, also fearing possible reprisals as they could imagine alliances that did not correspond to the truth (…)». After almost 4 years, therefore, the about-face for «reasons and reasons – he writes – that at the moment I do not intend to explain and which I will reserve the right to go into later». the story
The Sant'Onofrio massacre, the 'ndrangheta wars and the arrests: the decline of the Bonavota clan between convictions and new informants
From the Epiphany massacre that started the rise of the 'ndrina to the fugitive status of the alleged boss dressed as a priest. The heavy sentences and the repentant "killer"
Published: 01/07/2025 – 6:44

VIBO VALENTIA A massacre, two innocent deaths, the green light for the rise of one of the most powerful 'ndrine in Calabria. On January 6, 1991, a commando aboard an Alfa 33 opened fire in the main square of Sant'Onofrio, killing the innocent Onofrio Addesi and Francesco Augurusa . A 'ndrangheta fight at the base of the " Epiphany massacre ", as it would later be called, between the Petrolo-Bartolotta clan and the Bonavota clan. A dramatic event, told exclusively to Corriere della Calabria by the Carabiniere who chased and arrested one of the killers , Rosario Michienzi, which marked the turning point for the 'ndrangheta in Vibo Valentia. The arrests that followed the massacre dealt an almost lethal blow to the 'ndrina Petrolo-Matina-Bartalotta, giving way to the rise of the Bonavotas.

The “Epiphany Massacre”: the pursuit and surrender of the killer in the story of a heroic Carabiniere. «The force had won»
The feuds with the Petroli-Bartolotta and the Cracolici
A bloody feud, culminating in the Epiphany massacre, also pushed by external 'ndrine such as the Lopreiato and the Mancuso. Having held out militarily paves the way for the Bonavotas to control Sant'Onofrio, also giving the go-ahead to expansion programs outside the town to the gates of Vibo. These expansionist aims, particularly in the nearby industrial area of ??Maierato, will be the ones to start another bloody 'ndrangheta fight: that against the Cracolici , which continued from the beginning of the new millennium until beyond 2010. In a few years, the brothers Alfredo and Raffaele Cracolici, bosses of the clan of the same name operating between Maierato and Filogaso, were killed. The latter was killed not only because of the dispute over the territory but "to prevent revenge for the murder of his brother", as Francesco Fortuna, a repentant killer of the Bonavota clan, recently revealed.

The Growth of the Clan and the Challenge to the Mancusos
The war against the Cracolicis further consolidates the expansion of the Sant'Onofrio 'ndrina. Drugs, extortion and illicit trafficking guarantee the economic growth of the clan, now "emigrated" also to the North and abroad, with bases in Canada and Piedmont. In Carmagnola a real 'ndrangheta cell linked to them is found, as written down in black and white by the judges in the Carminius trial , which arrived on appeal with a sentence of over 140 years in prison. A power that almost convinces the 'ndrina to oppose the dominant one of the Mancusos, forming an alliance with the group of the future repentant Andrea Mantella . But the State does not stand by and watch: the criminal rise is interrupted by operations, investigations and convictions that in a few years decapitate the 'ndrina.

The fugitive status and the heavy sentences
Van Helsing, Dragon Eggs, Talita Khum, Conquest and Rinascita Scott. Vast operations and raids that targeted the Sant'Onofrio family, which resulted in trials, convictions but also "excellent" acquittals. With Rinascita Scott alone, Domenico Bonavota , considered the military wing, was sentenced to 30 years (in the first instance), Nicola Bonavota to 26 years and Pasquale Bonavota to 28 years, a super-fugitive until April 27, 2023, when he was arrested in Genoa. The latter, considered to be at the top, was "forced" to dress as a priest to escape the police. For his part, in court, he always defended himself by saying that "I was not a fugitive, I was innocent". A heavy 22-year sentence also for Domenico Cugliari , alias “Micu i mela”, who Mantella spoke of as someone who “gave orders” due to seniority issues after the death of Vincenzo Bonavota and before the rise of his firstborn Pasquale. This year, Nicola Bonavota also received another 18-year sentence for the murder of Domenico Belsito , on which the newly repented Francesco Fortuna reported . The “killer” of the clan who decided to take the plunge this year, just as Onofrio Barbieri had previously done , whose disclosures have enriched the pages of the DDA investigations. New developments and new evidence against the 'ndrina to which he belonged could arise from collaborators of justice, in particular Fortuna. Arrests and investigations that have scaled down the power of the Bonavotas, in the wake of what happened to the entire 'ndrangheta of Vibo Valentia, weakened by the action of the State. As a small "compensation" of justice to those who, like Onofrio Addesi and Francesco Augurusa, were innocent victims of the brutal cruelty of the 'ndrine. ( ma.ru. )
