Ok the wiseguys can defendant themself in the streets but in the prisons especially in the West Coast the bosses must send money to who control the prison for avoid problems? Especially if the mobsters must serve long sentences. I wouldn't be surprised if some bosses or high level captains paid if they were in prisons far from home and if they were mixed with the general population. Generally mob guys are well respected anywhere in prison but it's not true universally, there are always nuts or haters or people who are just looking for trouble. So why not pay a gang a few bucks for peace of mind. There's no shame in it, numbers are what counts in prison and a 60 year old mob guy can't do much against the hordes of blacks and hispanics. I think Scarfo paid the Mexicans in La Tuna, for instance. Also I don't remember who but I'm pretty sure I read some of the Medellin or Cali guys who served time in the US also paid for protection. It might have been the Ochoas, I don't remember.

I never heard of Carmine Persico doing such a thing. He was still able to conduct a mob war on the streets from a California prison from what I understand. Gotti was punched by a black inmate. Was he not sucker punched, and ill by then?
British is best....
