'Ndrangheta, Camorra and Cosa Nostra “allies” in Milan: the Court of Cassation agrees with the prosecutors

MILAN Three suspects, including Gioacchino Amico, in the maxi investigation “Hydra” by the Milan DDA, centered on an alliance between alleged affiliates of the three mafias, Cosa Nostra, Camorra and 'Ndrangheta, in Lombardy, were arrested by the Carabinieri of the Investigative Unit, after the Court of Cassation rejected their appeals to the Review Court, which last October had accepted the accusatory system of the PM Alessandra Cerreti and the Prosecutor's Office led by Marcello Viola.

The Review
A decision of the Review that came after the investigating judge Tommaso Perna, instead , in October 2023 had rejected 142 requests for precautionary measures out of 153, ordering 11 arrests and rejecting the accusation of mafia association as a "consortium" of the three mafias, renamed by the prosecutors "Lombardy mafia system". After the first of a long series of hearings in the Supreme Court that will take place in shifts until mid-February on about forty positions, that is, on the suspects for whom the Review ordered precautionary custody in prison for mafia association, the provision rejecting the three appeals and imprisonment was carried out. And Gioacchino Amico was arrested , alleged head of the Lombard "unitary structure" on behalf of the Camorra of the Senese clan. Pietro Mannino, a presumed Cosa Nostra member, was also arrested, and Vincenzo Senese, already detained for other crimes, was notified of the order in prison.

«The alliance exists»
From the rejection of the first three appeals examined by the Court of Cassation, and pending the reasons, it can be said, however, that the Supreme Court has accepted the line of the Review on the alliance between exponents of the three mafias. And this after the "Hydra" case had also created a clash between the prosecutor and the investigating judge's office, following the rejection of the numerous arrests requested.

The long arm wrestling
The Review, last October, after the appeal of the DDA on 79 positions with a request for prison for mafia association, in the investigations of the Carabinieri of the Investigative Unit, ordered the precautionary custody of 41 suspects, including Paolo Aurelio Errante Parrino, 77 years old and who, according to the investigators, would have been the "point of connection" between the alleged "mafia system" in Lombardy and the "boss of bosses" Matteo Messina Denaro, who was his cousin on his mother's side and died in 2023. For Parrino the hearing in the Supreme Court is scheduled for next week and for all the other positions there will be hearings until mid-February. In the meantime, the suspects remain free, but this decision to reject the first three appeals of the defense seems to go towards accepting the reasons of the Review on the arrests to be carried out.

The Hydra Investigation
According to the judges, who in October accepted the appeal of the DDA, in Lombardy in recent years there has existed, both from a 'military' point of view with the most classic activities, such as extortion and drug trafficking, and with financial infiltration, a new and unique mafia association composed of alleged affiliates of the three mafias, with a sort of pact for shared business. They would have "transferred into the horizontal partnership all the genetic traits of the associations to which they belong". According to the Review Court, Giuseppe Fidanzati, alleged leader on behalf of Cosa Nostra, and Massimo Rosi, alleged top exponent for the 'ndrangheta, must also go to prison. For six positions, the precautionary measures had also been rejected by the Review Court due to the absence of serious evidence, while the remaining, or 32 in total, were not accepted only due to the lack of precautionary needs, with confirmation, however, of the serious evidence.
