Mormile Murder, Appeal Trial in Milan on March 12
'Ndrangheta bosses Antonio Papalia, Franco Coco Trovato and Domenico Papalia convicted as instigators

MILAN The appeal trial for Salvatore Pace, the collaborator of justice sentenced to seven years with the abbreviated trial in the first instance for the murder of the educator Umberto Mormile , has been set for March 12, 2025. Together with him, the preliminary hearing judge Marta Pollicino had sentenced another collaborator of justice, Vittorio Foschini, to the same sentence, who did not appeal and for this reason the sentence against him has become irrevocable.
In the reasons for the first verdict, the judge had written that the young educator in the Opera prison was killed on April 11, 1990 in Carpiano, in the Milan area, probably because he was "aware of the relationships between the 'ndrangheta and the secret services , in a context of intertwining of powers". Pace and Foschini ended up on trial after the reopening of the investigation requested by Mormile's family, brother, sister and daughter, represented by the lawyer Fabio Repici. Mormile, 34, was murdered on April 11, 1990 while he was going to work when two individuals riding a high-powered motorbike fired six gunshots at him. The ' ndrangheta bosses Antonio Papalia, Franco Coco Trovato and Domenico Papalia had already been convicted in 2005 as instigators of this murder, and Antonio Schettini and Antonino Cuzzola as material executors.
