Trump speaks with Egypt’s Sissi after repeatedly floating idea, to relocate Gazans
US, Egyptian readouts of call make no mention of proposal, after Arab foreign ministers convene in Cairo to reject any effort to ‘vacate’ the Gaza Strip
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi told his US counterpart Donald Trump on Saturday that the world was relying on him “to reach a permanent and historic peace agreement” to end the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians.
Saturday’s phone call was the first between the two leaders since Trump repeatedly floated a plan in recent days to relocate Palestinians from Gaza into Jordan and Egypt, which Sissi and other Arab leaders have strongly rejected.
Neither the American nor the Egyptian readout of the call mentioned the proposal.
The White House’s statement sufficed with noting that the two “discussed Egypt’s important role in the release of hostages from Gaza” and that Sissi expressed his confidence that “Trump’s leadership could usher in a golden age of Middle East peace.”
