I endorse this harsh statement by Sergio Gambino, on behalf of the Sharo Gambino House of Culture, and I express my closeness and solidarity to the mayor Alfredo Barillari, also because the image of a black, burned , violated car nullifies the many efforts of administrators, Cultural Clubs, schools, associations, who are committed to changing the fate of an area among the most abandoned in Italy and with the most worrying depopulation data. I endorse it because, right here, a great writer and intellectual like Sharo Gambino, wrote the first book on and against the 'ndrangheta. Every now and then someone, even with good reasons, talks about the 'ndrangheta to affirm principles of guarantorism (affirmed in the Constitution), but guarantorism is almost always to legitimately support the rights that must be ensured, it seems obvious to reiterate this by those who always and in any case feel like guarantors, even for those who commit crimes, but seldom is guarantorism demanded for the victims, for those who pay the protection money, for those who cannot choose where and what to buy, for administrators who operate legally, for those who live honestly from their toil. And in the meantime, young people continue to leave the Serre di Gambino, not only for economic reasons, but for ethical and civil choices, with pain, without wanting to and, of course, maybe, they could end up in places more unlivable and mafia-ridden than those they leave, but in the meantime the South becomes a desert and a few criminals consolidate and feed the anti-Lab stereotypes, for which others are not always responsible, and certainly not those who do not give up and who, despite everything, resist.

Will the tariff war unleashed by President Trump also have consequences on the business of the 'ndrangheta? Probably yes, and it is certain that the economic minds of the Calabrian clans in these hours are evaluating everything that is changing around the globe. Especially in Canada, a nation at the center of global drug routes and a territory of antagonism with the White House.
The latest news reports thirteen provinces (Canada is a federal state) that have joined together to respond to the trade war of their neighbors with measures that make the pouring and selling of American whiskey and bourbon much more expensive. Will there be a return to the past like the times of prohibition? For the moment on this front we are in the vicinity of the fant'ndrangheta.
Another issue is more likely. That of the goods that leave from the port of Montreal. Antonio Nicaso, an authority on Canadian mafias, declared two years ago to Fabio Benincasa of the Corriere della Calabria "whoever controls Montreal, controls the access point for cocaine in North America". For some time now, in our newspaper, I have been trying to unravel even in that distant latitude, trying to codify a long chain of bloody murders of Calabrians and also recounting the limits of Canadian legislation held back by broad guarantees in terms of anti-mafia legislation that has often allowed famous Calabrian bosses to get away with it in the land of the Red Coats, who are very busy with the work of repression.
I would like to point out a useful and well-documented book on the subject from the precious “Mafie” series distributed by the Gazzetta dello Sport , which has assigned the volume “Le mafie in Canada” to the young Calabrian researcher Eleonora Aragona .
The author, originally from Amantea, combines in her work the ability of a law researcher in Milan where she lives together with her already rich curriculum of free lance for various newspapers. The real added value is that Eleonora had an experience as editor-in-chief for the weekly “La Riviera” circumstance that allowed her to live in Siderno and surroundings. As is known Siderno is the capital referent of the Canadian criminal structures. The author Aragona therefore found herself in the privileged condition of connecting the data of the judicial orders with customs and people of the territory that she saw in her own habitat.
Eleonora Aragona offers us new nodes of knowledge of a map that is not always decipherable.
The first concerns a new anthropology of Canadian crime. Defined as “The milieu”. A cartel that combines Cosa Nostra, 'ndrangheta, Haitians, street gangs, Irish and Asians. At the top are the Sixth Families and the Siderno Group. It is not a Brancaleone army and the Calabrians and Sicilians are not opposed but mixed in wars and trafficking.

It would be an absolute first. A novelty of enormous importance that we report only as a possible hypothesis but not certain.
Canada is certainly a key state for the contemporary 'ndrangheta that has ancient roots. As the story of Vincenzo Cotroni, son of a carpenter from Mammola, who arrived in 1925 at 15 years old, and who as an adult becomes the Bonnano's right-hand man in Montreal, tells us. Ethnic groups marginalized by the laws of the time and who take the social elevator as criminals.
Reading Eleonora Aragona's book seems like a movie. REGGIO CALABRIA Former 'ndrangheta broker and international drug trafficker Vincenzo Pasquino (born in 1990) will be tried before the preliminary investigations judge of the Court of Reggio Calabria . He was born and raised in Turin, but is considered a leading member of the 'ndrangheta and was involved in the maxi-investigation into international drug trafficking "Samba" by the Turin Anti-Mafia District. In particular, it is a complex international investigation involving three criminal groups, distinct from each other but connected, dedicated to drug trafficking on the Atlantic route. A cooperation developed with the Brazilian authorities since 2019 and which led, at the time, to the arrests of Nicola and Patrick Assisi.

The joint position
The position of the collaborator of justice, therefore, will be reunited in the “Eureka” proceeding, during the trial celebrated with an abbreviated procedure, as established by the preliminary hearing judge Antonino Foti. The operation of the Reggio Calabria District Anti-Mafia, which began on May 10, 2022, led to the arrest of 34 people, 29 of whom ended up in prison, 5 under house arrest. A blitz born from the investigation coordinated by the then prosecutor Giovanni Bombardieri against the alleged top exponents of the Alvaro di Sinopoli clan, the Reggio branch of the large “Propaggine” investigation of the Rome DDA.

The Alvaro-Penna gang
Now, after almost three years, the prosecutor at the end of the prosecution, has advanced the request for conviction for 14 defendants for over 2 centuries of prison. Among them are Antonio Alvaro known as “u massaru”, Carmelo Alvaro, known as “Bin Laden”, for whom sentences of 16 years and 22 years and 6 months of prison were requested respectively. Acquittal also requested for Domenico Rechichi, Giuseppe Durante Palermino, Antonino Gioffrè and Antonio Carzo. Nicola Alvaro, however, died.

Investigations started in Rome in 2016
The investigative activity was started in 2016 by the Operations Center of the DIA with the coordination of the Rome Public Prosecutor's Office. Subsequently, following the emergence of numerous and significant points of contact with Calabrian subjects operating in Sinopoli, Cosoleto and neighboring territories, part of the documents were transmitted for competence and the investigations, for that part, continued with the coordination of the DDA of Reggio Calabria. In addition to confirming the existence of the 'ndrangheta local in the territory of Sinopoli, where the Alvaro mafia family is rooted and to which the Penna family is linked, the investigations made it possible to ascertain how the gang gave life, in the capital, to a branch (called the Rome local), which represents an autonomous "detachment" of the association rooted in Calabria.

Meetings with the Calabrian leaders only for weddings or funerals
According to investigators, with the DIA investigation there is a clear image of the existence of a Roman offshoot, the object of investigations coordinated by the DDA of Rome. Authorized by the highest leaders of the Calabrian 'ndrangheta, it is a place that was in close connection with the "mother house in Sinopoli" that had the task of finding a solution to the frictions between the Roman associates. The observance of traditional rites and languages ??was also exported to Rome. MILAN Salvatore Giacobbe, born in 1952 in Gioia Tauro, considered the head of the criminal group linked to the 'ndrangheta active in the Milanese hinterland and with roots in Calabria, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison . The decision was made by the judge of the Court of Milan, Daniela Cardamone, following the council chamber and at the end of the trial held with an abbreviated procedure. In addition to Giacobbe, 8 individuals have been sentenced.

The investigation
They are all involved in the operation of the Guardia di Finanza of Milan that began in April of last year, with the arrest of 14 individuals, together with the agents of the Local Police and the collaboration of the Carabinieri of the Forestry Unit Command. Giacobbe, however, did not act alone but "together with individuals close to him". Among these, his son, Angelino, and Livio Pintus, both sentenced to 13 and 10 years and 8 months respectively. To carry out the criminal plans, the association could count on the collaboration of several compliant individuals, used as front men in order to evade the provisions of the law regarding concretely applicable patrimonial prevention measures, to whom the ownership of several commercial establishments located in Lombardy and Piedmont was fictitiously attributed.

In addition to the detection of criminal conduct typical of mafia-style organized crime, such as extortion activities for "debt collection", the investigations have allowed us to reveal an efficient mechanism implemented by the criminal group, through the stipulation of fictitious supply contracts in the absence of actual needs for the employment of manpower, to defraud numerous temporary employment agencies with the complicity of the temporary workers who, systematically, back-pay the salaries of the associates of the aforementioned criminal group. The (unsolved) murder of Boiocchi and the intimidating tone
Vittorio Boiocchi known as “the uncle” was killed by two hitmen on a motorcycle under his house in via Fratelli Zanzottera on the evening of October 29 , 2022. The two mysterious men had their faces covered by full-face helmets and were wearing dark clothes and jackets with blue stripes on their arms. According to a witness, Boiocchi would have gone to their meeting “ Don’t do it, don’t do it”. A few months before his murder, Boiocchi was arrested for an attempted robbery, as told by the collaborator of justice . And in the last report of February 18, 2025, regarding the episode, the prosecutor Storari of the Milan DDA asks Beretta if he had been threatened in any way. «Their presence already, the way they arrived, the ways in which they introduced themselves, the language they use», explains Beretta who clarifies even better: «They have a way of speaking that with the speech seems like they want to intimidate you, understand? They have this way of doing things, this intimidating way, even the way they position themselves on the chair». The prosecutor of the DDA of Milan, Paolo Storari, leafs through it in front of Andrea Beretta, born in 1975, former leader of the Inter ultras and now a collaborator of justice after having killed, last September 4, 2024, the scion of the Calabrian 'ndrangheta, Antonio Bellocco. Among the names that catch the eye, there is also that of an Inter legend: the former captain - and now vice president - Javier Zanetti.

Like ‘Look, I’m going to eat, give me a discount’”. “Discounted” lunches, then, but not only that: “We also talked about football, about things… he would give us a hand, maybe with the fans” , Beretta explains, “to give us some help, maybe in terms of bringing in banners, for the choreography”, then Zanetti “talked to Marotta, those people over there”. As explained by the repentant, he spoke directly with Zanetti, «we also exchanged phone calls via WhatsApp, I had him do a mural in Pioltello, with him with Champion, he came to the club…» «there was a relationship, he is a very good man» Beretta says, with admiration, to the prosecutor.

I intervened to have this guy who was a friend of Antonio's greet him during the event...", but personally "no, no" and he specifies again: "I had him make maybe some video greeting messages, maybe for some of his friends, 'make a video greeting'. Relationships that Zanetti himself, a couple of months ago, had confirmed. "I only had acquaintances with some members of the organized fan base, I've been in the club for 30 years, of course I know some of the ultras and this someone contacted me", he explained in an interrogation. "I've always told these types of people not to put me in difficulty".

Addicted to the use of knives» but, he explains, «I had forbidden him to come to the stadium, some arguments had arisen with Nino Ciccarelli about girls, well, their tarantellas». «Now he will surely have returned, when the cat is away the mice will play». When asked by the investigators about the work carried out by Garino, the repentant former ultra leader says: «He basically works as a blockhead for a temporary employment company of Puma, a guy who also comes to the curve, but his name doesn't come to mind. The one who gave the job to Antonio Bellocco» . According to Beretta, «he works as a blockhead for Puma, he receives a salary to not do a damn thing».

Another topic touched on by the prosecutors was the relationship with a certain Busnelli, owner of the transport company of the same name that, according to what emerged from the “Doppia Curva” investigation, would have provided the means of transport to the Inter fans’ management during away matches. The prosecutor Storari explained to Beretta that Busnelli himself denied the theory according to which Beretta, Ferdico and Bellocco had purchased a bus and registered it in his name . “The bus is ours,” replied the collaborator of justice, “we collected the money with our work at the Curva, tickets, things… I know that Marco intended to undertake this work activity and that he brought him the money, he gave the money to Busnelli”. “And I exclude any possible fraud by Marco, I saw the bus 100%, it was cream-coloured”. And he insists: «It's something we set up, we didn't say too much maybe (...) we tried to get in touch with the Milan guys, if they needed to maybe use him for away games». Loans to Romeo
Romeo then tells investigators the details of the debt he had accrued with Desiderato. Because of Covid, in fact, "my marijuana channel stopped and I found a second channel, which wanted to be paid in cash". On this occasion, Romeo obtained a loan of 60 thousand euros from Desiderato, which was later returned, plus a percentage of 6 thousand euros. Some Albanians then proposed to Romeo to buy "a very valuable smoke", but this is where the first problems began. The collaborator says he asked Desiderato for 150 thousand euros, an amount he was unable to return because the batch of drugs "exploded" and went bad because "it was kept hidden in a place that was too hot". Then the request for another 50 thousand euros for the purchase of a plot of land increased the debt to 200 thousand euros, which would later become 300 thousand. «This sum was applied by Desiderato because from the construction of the property that I had to build in Meda, I would have earned about 900,000 euros, therefore, he asked me to give him 1/3 of the profits», Romeo told the investigators. Things, however, did not go as planned due to problems related to the authorizations and so, without even starting the work, Romeo found himself forced to return half a million euros to the Calabrian. «Not having them, Orazio gave me another two months, asking me however to renovate the house of a lame Calabrian resident in Cinisello Balsamo; then of a certain Carmelo of Sicilian origins and to build a car wash at the distributor in viale Fulvio Testi in Milan, which he had acquired and registered in the name of a girl».
