REGGIO EMILIA A new blitz in Emilia-Romagna has hit the 'ndrangheta that has been based here for years. At dawn today, in fact, the men of the State Police with the Reggio Emilia Flying Squad, and the support of the Central Operations Service and the Flying Squad of Bologna and Crotone - together with the soldiers of the Reggio Emilia Guardia di Finanza - executed a precautionary custody order in prison against 6 people and 19 searches. These are individuals accused of mafia-style criminal association. The restrictive measures, specifically, were issued by the investigating judge at the Bologna Court, Alberto Ziroldi, at the request of the Bologna DDA, on the basis of the results of a long and complex investigation coordinated by the deputy prosecutor Beatrice Ronchi, against members of the 'ndrangheta-type mafia association operating in Emilia-Romagna, with its epicenter in the city of Reggio Emilia.
Blow to the Arabia family
In particular, the investigations focused on the Arabia mafia group, a criminal organization characterized by the wide availability of weapons and dedicated to extortion, fraud, as well as receiving stolen goods from thefts from transport companies, committed in order to facilitate the activities of the mafia association. According to what emerged from the investigations, the head of the organization is Giuseppe Arabia (class of '66) known as "Pino u' nigru", already definitively sentenced and considered "a leading exponent of the 'ndrangheta gang operating in Emilia" . The Arabia family is connected by family ties to the boss Antonio Dragone (class of '43). Because Rosaria Arabia, daughter of Nicola and sister of Giuseppe, first married a son of the boss, Salvatore Dragone, who died in Carpi in 1991, then Raffaele Dragone, killed on 31 August 1999, during the 'Ndrangheta war, by the rival Grande-Aracri group.
The arrests
The following ended up in prison: Giuseppe Arabia (class of '66) from Cutro; Giuseppe Arabia (class of '89) from Crotone; Nicola Arabia (class of '85) from Crotone; Salvatore Messina (class of '80); Salvatore Spagnolo (class of '91) from Crotone and Giuseppe Migale Ranieri (class of '78) from Cutro. Further investigative investigations, carried out with the assistance of the Guardia di Finanza of Reggio Emilia, have allowed us to reconstruct numerous tax frauds, confirming, once again, how the 'ndrangheta gang operating in Emilia is also specialized in issuing invoices for non-existent transactions. The fraudulent mechanism implemented by the suspects through the issuing of invoices for non-existent transactions for a total of 1,802,930.93 euros towards, in particular, 12 main user companies, has brought the criminal gang a profit of over 326 thousand euros in just a few years.
