2. and they could have ended it, at any point by releasing the hostages and surrendering -- even now
3. Hostage-taking is prohibited under international humanitarian law, constitutes a grave breach, a war crime and crimes against humanity
4. Geneva Convention prohibits the taking of hostages and are internationally unlawful acts
5. Nuremberg Principles adopted by the International Law Commission states that “killing of hostages” is a war crime
