South Korea opposition threatens impeachment if president does not resign

South Korea's largest opposition party says it will begin impeachment proceedings against President Yoon Suk Yeol if he does not immediately step down. The president has come under fire for declaring martial law yesterday. After fierce protests and opposition from parliament, he lifted the state of emergency last night.

For the Democratic Party, which has a majority in the South Korean parliament, that is not enough. The party demands that Yoon step down immediately. "We will not stand idly by as President Yoon destroys the constitution and tramples on democracy," the party said in a statement. "President Yoon must step down voluntarily immediately."

Earlier, opposition leader Park Chan-dae said Yoon "cannot escape accusations of treason." "It has become clear to the entire nation that President Yoon can no longer govern the country normally. He must step down," Park said.

The leader of South Korea's ruling PPP party, President Yoon's party, called Yoon's decision to declare a state of emergency "tragic." Han Dong-hoon said Yoon "should explain this tragic situation directly and thoroughly," he said in a televised broadcast.

According to Yonhap news agency, President Yoon canceled a drug policy meeting on Wednesday morning.

Around the parliament building in Seoul in the morning, after the tumultuous day and night, there was a lot of police presence. There are a few dozen demonstrators.

Yoon's unexpected power grab caused great unrest in the capital Seoul yesterday. The president accused the opposition of sympathizing with arch-enemy North Korea and doing everything to thwart the government. With the state of siege, parliament and political parties were sidelined.

The opposition then called on members of parliament and citizens not to accept this and to come to parliament. Despite the presence of the army at parliament, most members of parliament managed to reach the chamber. There they voted for a resolution to reverse the state of emergency. This happened a few hours later. Yoon announced in a televised speech that he would comply with the resolution.

Interesting Yoon is a Roman Catholic. The Catholic Church in South Korea has seen significant growth in recent years, increasing its membership from 7.9% of the population to 11% over the past twenty years. At the end of 2017 there were 5,813,770 Catholics in South Korea – 11.0% of the population.

The Chinese Cut Off Drone Exports

Posted on December 30, 2024By Peter Zeihan In China, Military, Ukraine

The Chinese Government has moved toward implementing an export ban on drones and drone components, with an eye toward making supply issues a particular headache for the United States and the Ukrainians.

In regard to the latter group, Kyiv has had particular success in utilizing drones in their war against Russia. From reconnaissance to swarm attacks to providing targeting data for UAVs, the Ukrainian war effort has been building and burning through thousands of drones.

While the design and rebuild activity is happening primarily within Ukraine, several key components: motors, flight controls, and especially the batteries and made in China. China’s massive supply of affordable parts is what drove the Ukrainians to make up for shortages within their arsenals with drones in the first place, and you can bet Moscow has been pushing China heavily to stop the flow of these parts to Ukraine.

As for the Americans, the Chinese are looking to respond to the bevy of tech export restrictions pushed through by the Biden administration, and Beijing is bracing for an onslaught of new Trump tariffs. Things like drone components are one of the few levers Beijing has in this fight.

But what will the ultimate outcomes be? This is an excellent opportunity for the United States and others in the West to start building out their own manufacturing capacity for these components—a win for both strategic and economic reasons. Even if the Chinese were everyone’s best buddies, the current Chinese system is dying. Literally. The Chinese government cannot hold back the impacts of the collapse of the population growth rate, and the Chinese economy is undeniably slowing down. The global economy’s reliance on Chinese overproduction is coming to an end, regardless of whether anyone wants it to or not.

Indo-Pacific security prompts Japanese visit to Netherlands

General Yoshihide Yoshida was a guest in The Hague on Friday of Chief of Armed Forces General Onno Eichelsheim and Minister of Defense Ruben Brekelmans. Japan's highest military officer and Brekelmans discussed the threats and geopolitical developments in the Indo-Pacific .
\
Eichelsheim already visited General Yoshida in Japan in April 2023. Both generals concluded that the situation in the Indo-Pacific requires more attention and cooperation. This is particularly to promote and protect the international legal order in the region. A safe Indo-Pacific is of great importance.

Security developments in Europe are directly related to those in the Indo-Pacific . A recent example of this is the sending of North Korean soldiers to the front in Ukraine by Russia. In addition, the Indo-Pacific is an important economic growth region in the world. How are the Dutch and Japanese armed forces preparing for having to protect the international legal order?

Yoshida did not limit his visit to Defence to The Hague. The delegation also visited the Military Rehabilitation Centre (MRC) in Doorn and the special forces . He delved into the joint management of these units. Japan, like the Netherlands, is setting up a Joint Operation Centre
Commander of the Armed Forces General Onno Eichelsheim and General Yoshihide Yoshida.

425 years of relations

This year we celebrate 425 years of diplomatic relations between Japan and the Netherlands. Yoshida's visit was therefore an important starting point for the further consolidation of the military cooperation between the two countries.

Japan has approximately 125 million inhabitants and a defense organization of 250,000 soldiers and 56,000 reservists.

In the recent reform of the Japan Self-Defense Force, the country is looking for more international connections and support. This is because it recognizes threats from neighboring countries such as China, Russia and North Korea.

The Netherlands is already regularly in the Indo-Pacific from a military perspective . This fits in with the growing attention of the Netherlands and its allies for a safe Indo-Pacific . Last year, Zr.Ms. Tromp was in the region. The Netherlands wants to send a naval vessel to the Indo-Pacific every 2 years to demonstrate its military presence. In addition, Defense has been participating in the United Nations Command (UNC) in the Republic of Korea (South Korea) since this month .

It's Funny we Dutch have connections in Asia for centuries.
With the Chinese, with the Japanese and also with the Russians.
Anna Paulowna (18 January 1795– 1March 1865), Grand Duchess of Russia, of the House of Romanov, was the wife of King William and Queen of the Netherlands.
Dutch words have found their way into Russian, largely thanks to Tsar Peter the Great (1672-1725) .
