And then hams and sausages, tomato sauce and other products for the preparation and packaging of pizza: these were the products that were imported into Germany in particular by the Cariati group. This is what investigators from the Catanzaro Anti-Mafia District reconstructed during the “Boreas” operation which, this morning, led to the arrest of 29 individuals between Calabria and Germany. Twenty in Italy alone, 13 of whom ended up in prison and 7 under house arrest.

The members of the Cariati 'ndrina, led by Giorgio Greco (class of '64) who ended up in prison today , would therefore have been involved in importing, distributing and marketing Italian food products in Germany . But not only that: from some wiretaps, investigators are convinced, some members would also have spoken of the marketing of car tires. According to the investigative findings, the distribution of the products in German territory was carried out under the instructions of Raffaele Talarico (class of '60) who was also arrested - at least until the end of August 2021 - that is, until Talarico left Germany to move to Modena, "moving away from the direct management, on site, of the activities in German territory" and from a small group of people, of which, over time, among others, Fiorenzo Santoro, Gaetano Roberto Bruzzese and Cataldo Scilanga, all three ended up in prison, were part.

The imposition on restaurateurs
According to the investigations, the once important food products «were marketed both through the warehouse at Falkenstraße 12 in Fellbach, and through direct distribution to restaurants and pizzerias in the area». In this case, the investigations would have shown how «the purchase of the goods, in some circumstances, was in fact imposed on restaurateurs who did not choose to do so voluntarily», leveraging the intimidating power deriving from the membership of the “proponents” to organised crime, «with respect for strict territorial jurisdiction, evidently the result of agreements with similar criminal organisations». The goods were shipped on board some vans while for the purchase of the goods to be distributed, the man from Cariati would have used the company attributable to Fiorenzo Santoro, but also other companies registered to other “front men” with no criminal record or with continuous changes of company presumably «functional to avoiding the consequences of the tax crimes committed such as VAT evasion».

According to the prosecution, some wiretaps revealed the fraudulent methods of "purchasing and managing the products" by Talarico through VAT evasion at Santoro's company. "(...) he has one thousand euros left... one thousand five hundred euros clean and he puts them in his pocket", Fiorenzo himself tells Roberto Bruzzese while the two, on 9 April 2021, were on board the Fiat Ducato used by the group. The two, Greco and Talarico, according to the accusation, would have availed themselves of the work of, among others, Antonello Zavattini, former driver of "uncle Raffaele" and factotum of the organization, and Antonino Perone known as "the accountant", who «were participants in the illicit affairs of the association and well aware of the criminal role of the aforementioned as leaders of the 'ndrina of Cariati». Raids and arrests in anti-mafia operation in Italy and Germany

A total of 29 arrests have been made in Italy and Germany in a major operation against the mafia. Most of the detainees were rounded up in Italy, the Italian police reported.

Even after Rinascita Scott, the major operation that began in December 2019, Antonio La Rosa would have continued to manage the clan's business, in particular thanks to the support of his wife Tomasina Certo, who was arrested, and that of his son-in- law Davide Surace , a 40-year-old from Spilinga. The latter would have been the "favorite " for managing the business during the detention of the alleged boss of Tropea, sentenced to 24 years in prison in the first degree of Rinascita. The investigations would have revealed that La Rosa "regularly used 6 cellular devices and 5 SIM cards ", registered to various foreign personalities. Some of these phones would have been shared with other inmates, including Luigi Federici, already arrested in Rinascita and also involved in today's operation. Between October 22, 2020 and May 21, 2021, " a total of 4,709 phone calls " were recorded between the suspect and his family members, including his wife, daughter Cristina La Rosa and her husband Davide Surace. For the investigators, the simplicity with which "La Rosa held and scheduled telephone appointments" was "disarming".

Concern for the fate of the gang
The central theme of the calls is the fate of the criminal gang following the investigation of December 2019, which had effectively changed the balance of the territory. From La Rosa would have come «instructions to his wife and son-in-law in particular on the management of the gang's business , such as relationships with third parties, the collection of money, his support, that of his family and the payments due to the defenders». A classic modus operandi within the dynamics of the 'ndrangheta, almost like a “proof” of loyalty from those who remained outside. So much so that Antonio La Rosa, alleged boss of the homonymous Tropea clan, allegedly invited his wife to keep a sort of list, “marking down” those who supported the family. This also emerges from the “Call me” investigation conducted by the Catanzaro DDA, a network of contacts that some alleged 'ndrangheta members allegedly continued to maintain from inside the prison. Among these is Antonio La Rosa, believed to be at the top of the Tropea clan, who in addition to managing the clan's affairs through his son-in-law Davide Surace allegedly also continued to give instructions regarding extortion and trying to resolve intricate family issues that arose after his arrest in Rinascita Scott.

Donations to the family and the “list”
In addition to Surace, La Rosa's frequent contact would have been his wife Tomasina Certo, who, according to investigators, "managed and had the accounts of the money available to the group." Money that would have also come from local entrepreneurs or external subjects " not otherwise justifiable if not for the "reverence" towards the La Rosa family ." It was the husband, listening to his wife's complaints about some relatives who had abandoned them, who suggested writing down how much she received so that she could then return it." A sort of list that according to investigators would have served more than anything else to "remember the people who had continued to show themselves to be friends." Of the "channels of help," as defined in the investigation, which would have been reciprocated even by the prisoner himself, who on holidays would have sent " greeting cards " or " postcards " to the same people that his wife "indicated as those who had paid her homage."

Extortion of the owner of a delicatessen
But the money available also came, according to investigators, from extortion that continued even after the arrest. In particular, an alleged extortion case against a pizzeria is reconstructed, with whose owner La Rosa had relations, as already emerged in previous criminal proceedings. According to investigators, the entrepreneur was "clearly subjected to taxes from the La Rosas as when he had warned him that he had left some 'meatballs' and there was something inside ". The money was thus camouflaged inside the deliveries of typical foods from the rotisserie. An alleged family-run extortion, since even after the arrest the handing out of money continued. It is again La Rosa's wife Tomasina Certo who made it known that during the Christmas holidays " the 'arancini thing' had not been seen ", attributing the reason to the absence of the alleged boss. The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) today condemned Italy for the extension of the 41bis sentence to Giuseppe Morabito , known as “'u tiradrittu”, a ninety-year-old man suffering from Alzheimer's . For the judges in Strasbourg, the prolonged application of harsh prison in these conditions is to be considered inhuman and degrading treatment , in violation of Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights .

“The Court is not convinced that the Government has convincingly demonstrated that, in the particular circumstances of this case, the extended application of the 41bis regime was sufficiently justified ,” the judgment reads.

Alzheimer's and hard prison: two incompatible realities
The prisoner in question is Giuseppe Morabito , a historic exponent of the 'ndrangheta , convicted of mafia association . But his clinical situation – the Court underlines – leaves no room for doubt : he suffers from progressive cognitive deterioration , diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease , incapable of understanding his own conduct or following a judicial hearing .

Yet, according to the Italian penitentiary system, he would still be able to maintain significant contacts with the criminal organization . A thesis that the ECHR dismantles point by point , defining it as lacking logical and human foundation .

The Strasbourg ruling concerns the period up to May 24, 2023 , the date on which Morabito was urgently hospitalized for a hernia . At that time, 41bis was suspended . And again: «When Domenico warned me, telling me that I shouldn't make mistakes, that he had put his face on the line for me, he told me that, if I had betrayed, I would have paid with my death». In front of the prosecutors of the District Anti-Mafia, Vittorio Raso lined up specific facts and episodes, useful for providing further pieces to the recent investigations into the presence of the 'ndrangheta in Piedmont. Raso the “Sold Out” now regretful
Listed for some time among the 100 most dangerous fugitives before being captured in June 2022, Vittorio Raso – nicknamed “Esaurito” and now a collaborator of justice – is considered a leading figure in the Piedmontese ‘ndrangheta. The former gold drug trafficker at the service of the Calabrian clans was convicted of having favored the Crea family (the brothers Adolfo and Aldo Cosimo considered until a few years ago the heads of the Calabrian mafia in Turin) with a role in a series of extortions perpetrated by the wives of the bosses once they had ended up in prison. Heard as a person under investigation in detention, in front of the prosecutors he brings into play one of the most powerful and important exponents of the 'ndrangheta active and rooted for some time in Piedmont: Domenico Alvaro, born in 1977, son of Carmine Alvaro, born in 1953, known as “u cupirtuni”, exponents of the Alvaro 'ndrina, descendants of the “Carni i cani” of Sinopoli.

The Power of the Alvaros
The story of the Alvaros in Piedmont is a story that began a long time ago. Intertwining of territory and criminal business that have already been reconstructed (and sanctioned) by sentences that have already become final. One of the original sentences was issued at the end of the “Prima” trial, which became irrevocable on February 7, 2003, with the conviction of both Domenico Alvaro (class of '77) and Carmine Alvaro (class of '53). A proceeding that, for the first time, allowed the reconstruction of the apparatus of the powerful 'ndrangheta clan. And Raso in front of the prosecutors also speaks of a specific episode, linked to the murder of a man from San Mauro. "Domenico Alvaro told me that they had searched high and low for the person they had then killed" because "they had to avenge a relative of theirs, for an old story that hadn't even started with them... he told me that they had searched for this guy for a long time, that he was condemned to death anyway, he couldn't go anywhere, even in fifty years they would have killed him". And, regarding the murder in San Mauro, Raso explains: "He told me that it was his brother Stefano who shot that person in the head. He only spoke to me about his brother". In a previous interrogation, Raso had spoken to the prosecutors about the possibility that Alvaro would act as godfather to his son. A circumstance that didn't happen because "I was afraid that my son would be called to take my place when he grew up, in the sense that in the 'ndrangheta, the son takes the place of the father, and I wanted to avoid that. I have always kept my son away from these things".

"No, I've never been there with Alvaro," Raso tells the prosecutors who ask him if he's ever been to Calabria. "After all," he says, "Calabria is up in the North, in the sense that it's all up there, I'm referring to all the 'ndrine, the things that are all up in the North, down there's the parent company, the elderly. Then everything is burned down there, there are bugs everywhere, people don't even talk anymore because they're so afraid of being intercepted." And he explains further: "After being affiliated, I went on vacation to Calabria for my own business and not with Alvaro, I went to Scilla, my brother Gino married someone from Scilla, and then I liked it as a place. When I was there I was always careful about what I said..."

There is also room to talk about Michelangelo Versaci (born in 1986), involved in the “Samba” investigation by the Turin DDA because he was considered a fundamental element in «maintaining contacts between the Calabrian 'ndrangheta exponents and those from Piedmont with those in Brazil». From Raso the prosecutors want to know more about Versaci's alleged affiliation to the Volpiano club. «He himself told me, he came to visit me at home the day after my release from prison. Versaci already knew about my affiliation, he knew that I was a good friend of Micu Alvaro because the latter had been in the Padua prison with Antonio Agresta and evidently had then sent the news out, of my affiliation».

Alvaro's letter and the "congratulations" for the affiliation
Raso then tells the prosecutors about another episode, again linked to affiliations. "I remember Alvaro writing me a letter from Padua, from prison, while I was still detained in Alessandria. In that letter he made me understand that Antonio Agresta was with him, that Antonio was happy that I had joined the 'ndrangheta, he also made me understand that Versaci had also been affiliated, and he wrote me something like that once I got out I would have to be close to Versaci who "loves us", in the sense that he was now affiliated, obviously it was all written in code, not explicitly".
So when Versaci told Raso that he had affiliated, the former drug trafficker was actually already aware of it. "He told me that he had affiliated with Antonio Agresta, in the club in Volpiano, who had the "sgarro". In short, he was in the minor, he was like me". And so, Raso tells the prosecutors, «we started working together in that period, I was under house arrest, he was free and we started seeing each other again. He told me that in that period Antonio Murra's former partner, a certain Davidino, worked with the smoke, I don't remember his surname. In the crosshairs are some alleged exponents of the 'ndrangheta of Vibo Valentia who are said to have maintained contacts with the outside world from prison, also thanks to the support of relatives. Among them, in addition to Antonio La Rosa , believed to be the head of the Tropea clan of the same name, also Federici, 26 years old with whom La Rosa himself shared prison in the first period of detention after Rinascita Scott.

Believed to belong to the Pardea Ranisi 'ndrina, Federici was convicted in the first degree of Rinascita Scott for the crimes of mafia association, damage and weapons. According to investigators, he would be part of the group of the " new recruits " of the Vibo Valentia 'ndrangheta, attributable to Salvatore Morelli , together with Domenico Camillò alias "u manganu" (sentenced to 26 years) and Loris Palmisano (14 years). From what emerged from the "Call me" investigation, Federici would have continued to be part of the criminal association even after his arrest through illicit calls from inside his cell.

Calls from prison
In particular, the topics of the conversations intercepted - it is written - "focus on events outside the prison, on the exchange of information regarding the statements of the various collaborators of justice and on what to do to face the accusations made, on how to move to elude the investigations". Federici would have appeared worried by the news on the new collaborators , namely "of a certain "Sapitutto" who "threw himself", or rather repented" and Michele Camillò. He would then have asked his parents to "inform themselves", given the "fragmentary news that he received in prison from the other inmates", but received as a response that "at the moment they were just rumours circulating in the city". He would have appeared particularly worried about Camillò's disclosures, "given that both were part of the same city gang" and therefore about what the former associate "could have declared against him".

Words on prison life and the story of the rifle
Of relevance to the investigators is the story of a rifle hidden in the garage, which Federici himself, fearing Camillò's statements, allegedly ordered his father to "throw it away", or to get rid of it, referring however to "two cans of paint". A few days after the phone call, a search by the Carabinieri inside the building led to the discovery of the weapon. Once he found out, Federici allegedly showed his disappointment since "he had given precise instructions to his father and then asked him to confirm them, receiving an 'everything's fine' that was evidently not true". According to the investigators, "even in prison Federici maintains his criminal calibre by trying to move situations and circumstances in his favour to deal with emergencies". Even in a conversation about prison life, "he does not express complaints, but as for the effect of detention on him he is clear in saying that he would have come out 'worse from prison'". There is no legislation like the Italian one and consequently it is possible to invest without there being the possibility of confiscating these assets. Abroad, almost no one is willing to admit - Germany is doing it recently - that there is a mafia presence in the territories ."

Criminals become ghosts thanks to the ability to disperse traces on the web, camouflaging themselves on channels that are difficult to reach. There are those who solicit investments in computer systems and hackers. Is this the right path?
"I'll leave this answer to the experts in the police force. I'll just reflect on how the 'ndrangheta has evolved. Years ago, I pointed out how the men of the 'ndrangheta - contrary to what was thought - not only talk, but want to be seen. Because they are children of our time. All or almost all of us are present on social media and why shouldn't the mafiosi be? On social media you see mafiosi or relatives of mafiosi who glorify the fate of their loved ones in prison. They show you their Rolexes, their good life, their cars, their girls. The message they send you is clear: "if you come with us you earn, otherwise you'll be left with just a little money that the State gives you" . But not all mafiosi are intelligent. There are idiots. I'm thinking of fugitives, who post selfies on Facebook or Instagram and make it easier for investigators trying to capture them ."

«It's nothing new. You will remember a story years ago that also involved Juventus. The problem is that in Milan there has always been a very particular and sick fan base and in Milan the 'ndrangheta and right-wing extremists are present. They have always been present in the history of Italy and Calabria, in particular. The sports cities have never wanted to take note of this reality because they were under blackmail , in reality this "sick fan base" creates more problems than advantages. It causes damage to the image.

Speaking of Milan. The mega-investigation “Hydra” has closed, the prosecution hypothesizes an alleged alliance between members of Cosa Nostra, Camorra and `Ndrangheta. What do you think of this three-headed gang?
«In 2000, I wrote a book about Milan and Lombardy. 25 years have passed, a quarter of a century, almost a generation. In the text I highlighted how strong the presence of the 'ndrangheta was in the reality of Milan where 'ndranghetisti, Sicilian mafiosi and Neapolitan camorristi operated in common agreement . Why? Because they had every interest in doing so. There were mafia clans that waged war in Sicily while in the north they did business, because money was more important than murdered bodies . The presence of the three mafia organizations capable of operating together was already evident. I made a report regarding cigarette smuggling, even before drug trafficking. I had noticed that in many seizures of cigarette cases that took place on ships there were always among the accused a Calabrian, a Sicilian and a Campanian. The mafiosi collaborated with each other. We will see if the “Hydra” investigation can stand up to the accusations from a judicial perspective, but beyond the judicial affair it seems clear that there could be a structure of this kind».

Let's go back to Calabria. Is it (im)possible to give back to the municipality of San Luca a political, democratic and maybe long-lasting government?
"I don't think it's an impossible mission. We all remember the mafia wars in Reggio Calabria with a thousand people killed or the one in Palermo. I believe that even San Luca can find a peaceful path on one condition: we must allow civil society to express itself and ensure that there is the possibility of ensuring free elections. It's not an easy task. I would be very careful about external interventions, we need local people capable of governing. ISOLA CAPO RIZZUTO Two “litigators” and a disputed land, the risk of a new internal feud within the clan avoided thanks to the intervention of the members of the Isola Capo Rizzuto clans. It is the 'ndrangheta that tries to maintain peace on the territory , resolving intricate issues that arise above all because of the unscrupulousness of the new generations. And whoever turns to the State is almost stigmatized and branded as a “carabiniere” . An emblematic episode emerges from the Folgore Blizzard investigation regarding a disputed land between Antonio Bruno , considered by investigators to be the heir of the Milanese boss Mimmo Pompeo , and another individual from Isola Capo Rizzuto. The investigators reconstruct the story in full, demonstrating the gang's modus operandi in resolving the issue, thus avoiding potential tensions and nipping the protagonists' warlike intentions in the bud.

The disputed land
The object of the dispute is a piece of land in Isola Capo Rizzuto, “claimed” by Antonio Bruno who allegedly claimed ownership of it, despite the other “contender” being in possession of paper documents that, however, were deemed “false”. Bruno also filed a complaint against him with the police, a gesture that apparently irritated both the “reported” who “resented the boss” and the men of the gang who preferred to resolve the issue internally. Luigi Masciari, arrested in the operation, also took an interest in the matter and apparently took on the role of mediator to try to resolve the problem in favor of Bruno, who in his opinion was “a good person who made money”. But even Masciari’s “embassy” was initially in vain, so much so that a third person linked to the clan was involved. It is from him that the invitation to resolve the issue comes because “we are all among ourselves” . «A reference – the investigators write – to the criminal connection to the same membership in the Isolitana gang and an explicit invitation not to fuel “fratricidal” clashes».

Threats and risk of violence
“Fratricidal” tensions that the “old guard” did not like at all. Luigi Masciari himself, discussing with a third person, agrees with him that « today’s youth is no good , clearly alluding to the mentality of the new generations». In subsequent meetings, faced with the “resistance” of the contender, Antonio Bruno reportedly told Masciari «that he had dissuaded a group of people linked to him from going down to Isola Capo Rizzuto to resolve the situation». Above all, that after the death of Mimmo Pompeo he now « had taken command and would send some Albanians to have him killed ». Threats that would have reached his ears too, but it is always Masciari who tries to calm the situation, mindful of the long trails of blood dating back to the period of feuds in the Crotone area, «underlining that his intention was to ensure peace in Isola, evoking a period in which he used to use armored vehicles to drive around the aforementioned municipality during the feud ».

The solution to the problem
But neither the threats nor the attempts at mediation by several members of the gang manage to resolve the issue, with the individual – the investigators underline – who «had not intended to change his attitude». Paradoxically, the one who resolved the issue would have been the Catanzaro Prosecutor's Office which, with an operation launched in October 2023, would have changed the criminal balance in Isola Capo Rizzuto, involving «individuals close to the parties involved».
