Although based on old photographs, we're not so sure Tony didn't leave his heart in Downtown Brooklyn.

Lol. No, not to my knowledge.

But coming from Astoria, Queens he knew all the guys over the years and played in many of their places. So he was obviously very friendly with them.

Coincidentally, the Scarpinito bio we just put up has one of the earliest known photos of Tony Bennett as a young up-and-coming crooner. He's sitting right next to mafioso Joe Scarpinito and other members of Scarpinito's crew.

The Mafia only helped Tony Bennett a bit in his early days, but they never owned him like some other artists.
He did perfom at weddings and other venues, when he was hired but that's no crime. If there was more to it the FBI would have investigated like they did with Sinatra for 40 years.

I agree. But we also have to understand that during the time period Frank chose to adopt his "Costello" moniker, the Irish ruled the roost. Not only in the "underworld" but also the so-called legit "upper world" which Frank wanted to infiltrate...which he eventually seamlessly did with panache and to great success.

So there was a method to his madness.

And he wasn't the only one to realize the potential advantage to an "Irish" surname.

Think Vincenzo Plumeri, aka; Jimmy Doyle; Paolo Vaccarelli, aka; Paul Kelly, Thomas Eboli, aka; Tommy Ryan, etc.,etc.

This also applied to professional boxing:
In the early years of the last century, Irish were the "underdogs," so a lot of Eastern and Central European fighters with names that ended in "cz" or "ski" went into the ring calling themselves "Battling Ryan" or "KId Murphy," etc. In the Thirties, Jews were the underdogs, so some fighters built their public persona around being "Jewish."
Case in point: Max Baer, a German Catholic, always wore trunks with a Jewish Star embroidered on them. Ray Arcel, the legendary trainer, once said, "I seen that guy in the shower--believe me, he ain't no Jew." lol

Absolutely.

But the boxing profession was not the genesis for Italians adopting Irish sounding names. The larger, overall reason why this occurred was Italians attempting to gain acceptance into larger American society; politics, big business, the entertainment industry, sports etc. The sport of boxing was just one category where this phenomena was applied.

If you remember, I created dozens and dozens of quizzes and challenges for members of our forum about Italian mobsters adopting anglicized nicknames. Many members of the Jewish mob also took these types of nicknames.

In fact, a perfect example about what we're discussing here is the Italian mobster who this actual thread was started for...

Giuseppe (Joe Tobin) Scarpinito was a top Brooklyn-based Italian mobster, who adopted the ring name of Joe Tobin during his professional boxing career. He later carried his Irish "ring" name forward, using it as his underworld moniker throughout his career and lifetime.

The surname "Tobin" is -- in fact -- an Irish last name.

Interesting TB it was indeed the golden era for Jewish boxers, they won something like 27 world titles between the start of the century and WWII.

Interesting book

https://www.amazon.com/When-Boxing-Was-Jewish-Sport/dp/027595353X

Among the first Champions would be Dutch Sam.
Samuel Elias, better known as the Dutch Sam, was a professional boxing pioneer, active between 1801 and 1814. Known as the hardest hitter of his time, he earned the nickname "The Man with the Iron Hand". He was also known as "The Terrible Jew", referring to his Jewish heritage.
