Haha we Dutch learned proper English at school while films and music are often American English.
So our teachers always stressed when we talked like an American.

Like Dennis Farina said in Snatch:

“Speak English to me. I thought this country spawned the fucking language, and so far, nobody seems to speak it.”

About subtitles I understand most Americans are still not used to it, to us it's normal we grew up with reading Dutch subtitles and as a kid you learn so much of a different language. I think it greatly helps to learn foreign words.
