Four journalists who worked for opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who died last year, have been convicted in Russia. They will all spend 5.5 years in prison for "extremism".

The journalists worked for the anti-corruption organization "Fund for the Fight against Corruption", founded by Navalny. In 2021, a court declared it extremist . Anyone accused of having ties to the organization is therefore at risk.

The trial of Antonina Favorskaya, Sergei Karelin, Konstantin Gabov and Artyom Kriger began in October and took place behind closed doors. They have always denied that they work for an extremist group. They say they are being prosecuted because they are a thorn in the side of the Kremlin.

Since the invasion of Ukraine, repression in Russia against domestic and foreign journalists has increased significantly. According to the organization Reporters Without Borders, 32 journalists are currently imprisoned in Russia.

Latest video footage
Favorskaya (35) became known as the woman who made the last video footage of Navalny. A day before his death, she was present at a court hearing in the Ural town of Charp, above the Arctic Circle, where Navalny was seen on a screen. Navalny died there last year under suspicious circumstances.

Favorskaya also reported from the place where Navalny was held, and after his death she accompanied his mother, who tried in vain for days to free her son's body for burial.

Producer and cinematographer
Like fellow convict Kriger (24), Favorskaya is affiliated with the SotaVision agency, which is active in following legal cases. The other two suspects, Gabov (38) and Karelin (42), worked as freelance producers and cameramen, including for the international news agencies AP and Reuters. In that capacity, they sometimes also worked for Navalny's media organization in the past.

Earlier this year, three lawyers were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 3.5 to 5.5 years, also for participating in an “extremist organization”.
