India launches missile strikes on Kashmir, Pakistan vows revenge

India has launched multiple missile attacks on Pakistani areas, the Pakistani army reports. India reports that it has hit at least nine targets in Operation Sindoor. Several explosions were heard on Tuesday evening in an area near the Pakistani city of Muzaffarabad, the city that is located about 130 kilometers north of the Pakistani capital Islamabad and on the border of the disputed Kashmir region.

Pakistan has vowed revenge for the attacks. A Pakistani security source told Reuters that one child was killed in the attacks, and two others were reportedly injured. One of the targets hit was a religious educational institution in the Pakistani city of Bahawalpur, near the Indian border.

India reports that it has launched Operation Sindoor with attacks on Pakistan. According to the country, the aim was to attack "terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan". It also concerns targets in disputed areas in Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian army emphasizes that it has not carried out attacks on Pakistani military bases. Pakistan has halted air traffic because of the airstrikes. Flights that were already en route have been diverted to Karachi, a city in southern Pakistan, far from the unrest.

Tensions have been rising between India and Pakistan since a terrorist attack in late April in the Indian territories of Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 26 Hindu tourists.
