Contrary to what some say, I strongly believe that during his lifetime Mariano Macaluso "technically" held the rank of but a soldier. But he was a very respected guy, whose real strength and value to Tommy Gagliano, and later, Tommy Lucchese, lay more in his ability to generate money through legitimate business investments than through gangsterism. Thats why so little was ever known or written about his activities. He wasn't a street hood, per se, running narcotics, gambling, etc.

He was also respected for his sharp mind and the savvy and wise counsel he was often sought out for by Tommy Lucchese, who he happened to be very close to.
