REGGIO CALABRIA Starting in September for the trial born from the “Ducale” investigation of the DDA of Reggio Calabria against the Araniti clan of Sambatello who allegedly played an active role in the regional elections of 2020 and 2021 and in the administrative elections of September 2020. The preliminary hearing judge of the Reggio Calabria Court – Francesca Mesto – has in fact ordered the trial before the collegiate court for 11 defendants. In the bunker courtroom for the abbreviated trial there will be: Domenico Araniti “the Duke” (class of '52); Pietro Araniti “Full” (class of '37); Francesco Araniti “U parenti” (class of '59); Antonio Modafferi “the architect” (class of '53); Nicola Dascola (b. '67); Giuseppe Barillà (b. '60) and Antonio Repaci (b. '59).

ROME The expansion of the 'ndrangheta in Emilia-Romagna , a region considered until a few years ago immune from mafia infiltration: Claudio Canepari and Giuseppe Ghinami tell the story for the first time in a systematic and cinematic way in " Aemilia 220 - The Mafia on the banks of the Po ", a docufiction co-produced by Rai Fiction - Fidelio with the support of the Emilia-Romagna Region through Emilia-Romagna Film Commission, broadcast on Friday 23 May, in prime time on Rai 2. The reference to "220", in the title, is not just a number: it is the symbol of the systemic scope of an investigation that has broken the silence and revealed how modern, mimetic and transversal the mafia has become. "Our goal - says director Claudio Canepari - is not only to inform, but to shake. Show how mafia infiltration is not a phenomenon confined to the South, but a ramified system, which has managed to insinuate itself into the daily life of Emilian cities, camouflaging itself among companies, contracts and social relations. We have worked to convey the complexity of this story, without simplifications, but with the awareness that clarity is a political act". At the heart of the story is the largest mafia trial ever held in Northern Italy, with 220 arrests, a specially built bunker courtroom and hundreds of audio and video interceptions that reveal a changed criminality: no longer pizzo and lupara, but jacket and tie, with transversal ties with politics, institutions and local media. Through interviews with investigators, magistrates, journalists and thanks to an immersive reconstruction - authorial signature of Claudio Canepari and Giuseppe Ghinami - the docufiction transforms the trial papers into a civil thriller capable of shaking consciences, also through unpublished archive documents, interceptions and direct testimonies. The cast includes Fabio Melchionna as the boss of the Cutro clan Romolo Villirillo ; Savino Paparella plays Antonio Gualtieri, another big shot in the Emilian 'ndrangheta; Cosimo Ribezzi is the boss Nicola Grande Aracri ; Jessica Giuliani plays Roberta Tattini, the banking and financial consultant in the pay of the Emilian mafia. Paolo Bonacini and Giovanni Tizian are the narrators. Between 2000 and 2010, a long trail of attacks, arson attacks and unsolved murders crosses Emilia-Romagna, without anyone really being able to explain the meaning: in Brescello, the town of Don Camillo and Peppone, there is a murder carried out by killers dressed as carabinieri ; in Reggio Emilia, instead, a bomb explodes in a bar in the center and another devastates the Revenue Agency of Sassuolo. "Aemilia 220 - The Mafia on the banks of the Po" follows step by step the investigations started in 2010 and culminated in 2015 with the most impressive anti-mafia blitz in the North: 220 arrests, a maxi-operation that involves Calabrian bosses but also professionals , politicians, entrepreneurs and public officials from Emilia .

Drug trafficking, extortion and even political-mafia exchange, operation of the Carabinieri at dawn coordinated by the Dda of Reggio Calabria. Some of the most powerful men of the Calabrian clans arrested. Companies seized in Northern Italy

Operation “Millennium” began at dawn on May 21, 2025 , one of the largest operations conducted in recent years against the 'ndrangheta . The Carabinieri of the Provincial Command of Reggio Calabria , on the input of the District Anti-Mafia Directorate led by prosecutor Giuseppe Lombardo , are executing 97 precautionary measures in half of Italy.

In the crosshairs are some of the most influential gangs in the province of Reggio , accused of having formed a real superordinate criminal alliance , capable of managing international drug trafficking and also penetrating economic and political circuits.

A national operation, a Calabrian heart
The precautionary measures were carried out in 14 provinces : Reggio Calabria, Milan, Monza and Brianza, Pavia, Nuoro, Bologna, Cosenza, Catanzaro, Vibo Valentia, Rome, Rimini, Verona, Agrigento and Turin . In addition to the local military , the ROS , the Calabria and Sicily Helicopter Squadron , the 14th “Calabria” Battalion , the Dog Unit , the 8th Helicopter Unit of Vibo Valentia, as well as special units for international cooperation (ICAN) coordinated by the SCIP of Interpol , were also involved .

The charges: mafia, drugs, extortion and politics
The 97 suspects , hit by three separate custody orders signed by the GIP of the Court of Reggio Calabria , are charged – in various capacities – with the crimes of: mafia-type criminal association , external participation in mafia association , association for the purpose of drug trafficking , dealing and possession of narcotics , extortion , kidnapping for the purpose of extortion , political-mafia electoral exchange , illegal possession and carrying of weapons . A real arsenal of crimes that outlines the widespread and tentacular infiltration of the 'ndrangheta in illicit trafficking, business and politics.

A super-dome for drugs
According to investigators, the gangs involved would have created a unified and organized structure , capable of monopolizing drug trafficking in vast territories through international channels. No longer just autonomous clans, but a superior direction that guaranteed logistics, protection and management of profits , in a criminal balance functional to everyone. The investigation, still in the preliminary phase , sheds light on a strategic leap in quality of the mafia organization: operational unity in place of traditional rivalries.

“Front” companies seized in the North
The operation also led to the preventive seizure of two companies , active in the restaurant and construction sectors , considered tools for laundering money and supporting the logistics of the mafia association. The companies – according to what emerges from the documents – could be traced back to some of the suspects. A further confirmation of how the 'ndrangheta is increasingly integrated into the "legal" economic fabric , even in the northern regions.

The excellent suspects
The former regional councilors of Calabria, as reported by Ansa, Sebastiano Romeo of the PD and Alessandro Nicolò , at the time of Fratelli d'Italia, are investigated in a state of freedom in the Millenium investigation coordinated by the Dda of Reggio Calabria. Among the politicians involved is also the former regional councilor Pasquale Tripodi , for whom however the aggravating circumstance of mafia has been excluded .

REGGIO CALABRIA The drug trafficking sector is «inevitably and inextricably» linked to the power of the 'ndrangheta clans. It has become the main economic activity in which organised crime is involved and the main source of income, so much so that a real «interdependence between drug trafficking and 'ndrangheta» has been created . In this sense, the enormous proceeds from the purchase and sale of narcotics constitute "the main income" of the premises in Platì. An analysis that emerges in the context of the "Millennium" investigation by the DDA of Reggio Calabria that led to the arrest of 97 people, including leading members of the clans of Sinopoli, Platì, Locri, Melicucco and Natile di Careri, as well as those of the premises in Volpiano, in the province of Turin, and Buccinasco (Milan).
Among the most affected gangs is that of the Barbaro of Platì , whose main source of income appears to be the drug trafficking business.

The drug business " main and necessary branch"
In Platì – it emerges from the ordinance – what should be only one of the «various branches of the company» becomes «the main and necessary branch» capable of determining the control and management of the clan, and where the management of drug trafficking occurs in a «unitary and centralized» manner . A circumstance confirmed by the collaborator of justice Domenico Agresta who on this point makes important statements to the investigators. A modus operandi, that of the Platì clans, also useful to «prevent any discontent and thus avoid possible feuds». « In Platì – explains Agresta – an attempt was made to create a unitary management of drug trafficking so as not to displease anyone and to avoid further feuds and further murders. Whoever has a way to import large quantities of cocaine must allow the other members to invest (that is, to bet with their own cash): this is why in Platì today there are no more feuds or murders. Everyone is given the opportunity to earn and exploit the various ways ».

From South America to the drug dealing squares of Lombardy
And the collaborator, during the interrogations, also provides details on the methods of importation and distribution of the drug. From South America to Platì, to reach the drug dealing areas of Lombardy , where the clan has rooted its criminal interests. Once the drug arrived in Platì, it was introduced into the Milanese and Pavia hinterland by individuals originally from Platì who lived in the North. Through «direct contacts in South America» «the cocaine arrives in the port of Gioia Tauro» , from where it leaves «via the Pesce and the Piromalli . These last two groups from what I know – Agresta states – do not participate in the collection of the money but are responsible for taking the cocaine out of the port and take a percentage that I am not able to tell you how much it amounts to but I know that they are paid with cocaine and not in cash» . Very pure cocaine: «The cocaine in this group is the one marked with the scorpion (it is pure cocaine, the best, purchased at a price that I am not able to report)» .

Ninety-seven people under investigation in total. Several prominent names from the Alvaro clan were present.

Among the 97 arrests carried out at dawn as part of Operation “Millennium”, coordinated by the Reggio Calabria District Anti-Mafia Directorate and led by prosecutor Giuseppe Lombardo, there are also names linked to local politics.

Among those arrested is Pasquale Tripodi , a former regional councilor, who was placed under house arrest. He was not charged with the aggravating circumstance of mafia. In the investigation, two former regional councilors are also under investigation at large : Alessandro Nicolò , former Calabrian leader of Fratelli d'Italia and defendant in the “Libro Nero” trial, and Sebastiano Romeo , who was linked in the past to the Democratic Party .

Among the people involved are individuals who actively participated in the 2020 regional election campaign in Calabria. Several of those arrested are members of the Alvaro di Sinopoli gang , among which the name of Cosimo Alvaro , known as “Pelliccia”, stands out.
