Man, I love these rumors.
First off, I have my own sources that are actually worth a SHIT, and here is what's the real lowdown:
*While the sequel is planned for 2008, that's just the suggestive date. While his brother Jonathan is working on a screenplay based on the treatment provided by David Goyer and himself, Christopher Nolan isn't at work as we speak on a sequel, or at least any serious pre-production.
*Nolan is contractually obligated to make a 2nd BATMAN movie, until the latest....in that of summer 2010. The sequel may happen, but it's not a given. Though honestly, I would be surprised if Nolan doesn't actually make it.
*He's too busy working on the post-production of his newest film, THE PRESTIGE, which comes out in October. Interestingly, it features Nolan's BATMAN BEGINS actors Christian Bale and Michael Caine in a cast that also includes Hugh Jackman, Scarlett Johansen, Andy Serkis, and....David Bowie.
*In fact, the only people contracted for the 2nd BATMAN movie are Bale, Caine, Freeman, and Gary Oldman. The rest is up in the air. In fact, Katie Holmes might not actually return in part because of the terrible buzz around her in the otherwise-well-received BATMAN BEGINS, but also because of that whole Tom Cruise shit, or as Trey Parker and Matt STone recently coined it, "The Stink".
*Meanwhile, many of the sets of BEGINS, from the Batcave to that of Gotham City are still standing in UK, which is always an indication that the studio returns to return to them.
*Goyer reportedly claimed that #2 would be about THE JOKER, while it would set up for #3, where TWO-FACE comes into the picture.
*My source isn't behind this, but this is my speculation about what the sequel would be about. Nolan talked about how "if" he does a sequel, it would deal with how after the top crime boss(Wilkinson) in the city was abruptly overthrown, there is now anarchy and chaos on the streets, with every ethnic gang and faction fighting it out for a major slice of the pie....and Bats is trying to keep them seperate enough so that he could take them down one at a time...or else things "Escalate".
Then appears THE JOKER, who I probably think will appear and then get such groups under his leader, and thus shit hits the fan.

These jokes were funny....when I heard ROBERT SMIGEL pen them out for AMBIGIOUSLY GAY DUO skits on SNL. I got an original for you hacks: "Ok, who wants to play the Batmobile game?" "What do I play?" "The Cave"

Batman Sequel Update The Joker, the title and a wee bit moreJuly 27, 2006 - A few more kernels of information about the planned sequel to Batman Begins have surfaced online today. The Batman-on-Film.com website has heard, as almost everyone has by now, that Heath Ledger is going to play The Joker in the next movie. The site claims The Joker will be just one of the villains in a larger story and that he won't appear until halfway through the movie, a la Batman in Begins. He is also expected to have a backstory. "From what I've heard about the direction of the film expect The Joker to be very creepy and very extreme," a trusted source for BoF advised the site, claiming that Ledger's Clown Prince will be totally unlike Jack Nicholson's portrayal in the 1989 film. BoF's source suggests, "Heath Ledger is perfect for the role as he has never played this kind of part before which is what Nolan was after. Think about it – if you see Sam Rockwell or Robin Williams or even Hugo Weaving, you'd know exactly how they would play the role before even seeing the film and that's not very intriguing for fans is it? I have a feeling Paul Bettany was out of the mix after his performance in The Da Vinci Code." BoF also reports that any previously rumored titles for the sequel are just that. "The title will most likely not be known until they've finished shooting." Source: IGN

Well, Troy Anderson has come through. After massive dives into the Batcave, he's got something that'll make you fanboys shit your pants.
Somehow, the son of a bitch got his hands on a floating preliminary SCRIPT TREATMENT for the upcoming BATMAN sequel that Nolan and gang will make for 2008.
Sure its only 4 pages, but I'll share he described to me. It's nothing substantial, but thanks would be appreciated to Mr. Anderson busting his balls in getting us fans some good info.
Alright, what did Troy describe to me?
*Katie Holmes' character is ABSENT from the treatment. In other words, Mrs. Tom Cruise aint coming back. No duh, right?
*Cilliam Murphy returns as Scarecrow, but apparently in a cameo-like part. Where? rebuilt Arkham Asylum, or as Troy says the script describe it, "The House that Batman built". Apparently, Carmine Falcone(Wilkinson) also has a cameo-that-could-get-axed part as well.
*Joker himself(recently casted with Heath Ledger) begins his tale at the beginning of the movie, as a hood fighting in the gang wars of Gotham City, until he is fatally wounded, then re-play ending scene of BEGINS and cue a title card, simply stating: "Some Time Later..."
*After a massive house-cleaning of Gotham City's bureaucracy after the disaster with Ra's Al Ghul, a new District Attorney has come into town, as described as an "Elliot Ness-esque" type, with the intention of filling in the city's bureaucratical seats with worthy, clean "go-getters". Of course, this is HARVEY DENT. (Guy Pearce dammit!)
*hard-boiled copper Jim Gordon(Oldman) rises through the police ranks.
*Crime still plays a massive role in the storyline.
*Alfred will have a "bigger" role.
This shit is vague folks, but its what I found so far. Anyway, more goods to come whenever they may come.

THE DARK NIGHT? "It's a dark and stormy night...especially for fuckheads at a crappy website that can't spell the FUCKING title right!" Well, its confirmed. THE DARK KNIGHT is the title for the BATMAN BEGINS sequel. Thank god instead of BATMAN ESCALATES or BATMAN BEGINS AGAIN, or BROKEBACK BATMAN, or BATMAN CONTINUES, or BATMAN RETURNS(NO, THIS IS THE OFFICIAL VERSION!), etc. Speaking of which, guess what Batcave explorer Troy Anderson also discovered for us? Who is WB's leading contender for the role of District Attorney-turned-Two Face baddie? That's right, Liev Schreiber. You all know how I posted more than once that Guy Pearce would rock as Dent, but you know what? Liev is kickass casting. So KICK ASS on THE DARK KNIGHT title, and KICK ASS on Liev... But what's the other rumor that nobody else is talking about? BOF, http://www.batman-on-film.com, reported about the Penguin ACTUALLY being in the sequel, but in that of a British gangster mold that wants to take on the city. Of course, in that treatment I told you all about the other day, there was NO mention of the Beaked Wonder in there. What gives? I asked Troy after he told me the news of a certain actor that's rumored(and that's all) to play Penguin, well, is Penguin really in the sequel or what? He shrugged, and went back to cleaning up guano from the Batcave. If he doesn't hassle his ass enough, he'll be replaced by an illegal alien. Mr. Wayne doesn't want lazy workers! From BOF: "(The rumor is that he'll be a British arms dealer/mob boss with designs on Gotham)." Ok, its a British actor playing this part, but who? Who exactly? Here are some clues: *He appeared in the great 80's cult classic PINK FLOYD THE WALL *He once beat up cartoon animals for fun *Robert DeNiro once famously replaced him in this Brian DePalma motion picture. Hey Irish, try to use BOF some more, will ya homey? Those guys deserve respect. Fuck joblo.com...

Dark Knight Talks Dark KnightAugust 4, 2006 - FilmFocus.co.uk spoke exclusively with Christian Bale about The Dark Knight, the sequel to last year's Batman Begins, and got his thoughts on his new co-star, Heath Ledger. Bale and Ledger are currently working together on the Bob Dylan-themed film I'm Not There. "I like, very much, that it doesn't have Batman written in the title. This take on Batman of mine and Chris' is very different from any of the others and everything else always had Batman in the title," Bale advised the site. The surprise casting of Ledger as The Joker has left some fans scratching their heads but Bale approves of him. "Heath is very much into what Chris had done with the first one and he's very passionate about the role," Bale revealed. "And he's a really good actor so we're going to see something very special from him." For much more of what Bale had to say about The Dark Knight, as well as working with director Christopher Nolan, check out FilmFocus.co.uk. Source: IGN

The Clown Prince of AnarchyOscar nominee Heath Ledger has been inundated with questions about his upcoming role as The Joker in The Dark Knight while he's been out promoting his new film Candy. Ledger views the Clown Prince of Crime as a "pure anarchist," according to MercuryNews.com. "I still feel like it's a character I've never done before, and I'm going to be donning a mask [figuratively]. I'm not really thinking about the commercial consequences. Maybe I should be. But at this point, it's just an exciting next step." In other Bat-rumblings, Moviehole.net claims it has heard that Rachel McAdams (Wedding Crashers) is "linked to a certain role in the upcoming Batman sequel." Although the site doesn't say which role that may be, Batman-on-Film.com muses that perhaps it is Selina Kyle, a.k.a. the future Catwoman. McAdams, it should be noted, starred in Red Eye opposite Cillian Murphy, who played the Scarecrow in Batman Begins. McAdams has also been linked with the female lead in Iron Man. Three Names for Two-FaceJanuary 11, 2007 - With The Dark Knight just two months away from the commencement of principle photography, the rumor mill has been working overtime churning out possible contenders for the key role of Harvey Dent, the Gotham City district attorney doomed to become the villainous Two-Face. A slew of thesps have been rumored for the part over the last year, including Ryan Phillippe, Hugh Jackman and Liev Schreiber. None of them appear to be "The One." Now Batman-on-Film.com reports that it recently heard of three actors who may be under consideration to play Dent: Oscar winner Jamie Foxx, Oscar nominee Edward Norton and the relatively unknown Eion Bailey. BoF says Norton's reps shot down the rumor for them. Foxx is a name they claim has surfaced more than once from their sources. If Foxx is indeed in the mix and wins the role, he would be the second African-American actor after Billy Dee Williams to play the role (Dent is white in the comics). Bailey is the most interesting rumored contender. The trades confirmed in 2004 that he screen-tested for the title role in Batman Begins. As BoF points out, Cillian Murphy also screen-tested for Batman, but won the part of the Scarecrow. Could it be a similar case with Bailey this time? Interestingly enough, Bailey later tested for the Man of Steel in Superman Returns. Bailey's credits include Mindhunters, Almost Famous, Nightmares and Dreamscapes, And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself , Fight Club, and a stint on ER (ex-Batman George Clooney's former stomping grounds) as "Jake Scanlon".
