I know.
Gay cowboy movie, or heterosexual movie, it's overlong, muddled, repetitive and even formulaic. It sweeps, not because it's a masterpiece, but because it's about a homosexual relationship. I found interest only in its cinematography.

I'm just surprised that their seems to be this hoopla over one hell of an overrated motion picture in CRASH(***/5) which actually was a decent picture, but Top 10? Hell no. Top 20? Fuck No. Top 50? Perhaps.
While I'm pissed that A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE didn't get a Best Picture or Director nomination(fuck!!!), but at least Hurt got nominated for his show-stopping 3rd-act appearance. Really, his first great movie-work in some time.
Hey, BATMAN BEGINS got nominated for Best Cinematography...good nomination.
SIN CITY should have been nominated for the following categories at least:
Best Supporting Actor - Mickey Rourke(actor-turned-boxer-turned actor nearly stole the damn movie before Owen and Willis had their chance) Best Cinematography - Yes, its CGI but so what? I seem to remember that TRON itself in the 80's was disqualified because the Academy thought its CGI was "cheating"!
Still, here are my personal-opinion picks for all the categories, followed later possibly by what I think WILL win:
Best Picture - MUNICH Best Director - Steven Spielberg, MUNICH Best Actor - Philip Seymour Hoffman, CAPOTE Best Actress - Reese Witherspoon, WALK THE LINE Best Supporting Actor - George Clooney, SYRIANA Best Supporting Actress - Rachel Weisz, THE CONSTANT GARDENER Best Adapted Screenplay - A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE Best Original Screenplay - SYRIANA Best Animated Movie - WALLACE & GROMIT Best Art Direction - HARRY POTTER & THE GOBLET OF FIRE Best Cinematography - THE NEW WORLD Best Costume Design - WALK THE LINE Best Documentary - MURDERBALL(fuck the penguins!) Best Film Editing - MUNICH Best Make-up - REVENGE OF THE SITH(lousy group of nominations for that category!) Best Original Music - John Williams, MUNICH Best Original Song - I refuse to pick from this lousy lineup Best Sound Editing - WAR OF THE WORLDS Best Sound - WALK THE LINE Best Visual Effects - WAR OF THE WORLDS(where's REVENGE OF THE SITH?!?!)

Have you seen it? I probably won't see Brokeback Mountain. It looks like pure oscar bait crap. I'll pass. It'll sweep though.
Hey, how's it going?

In response to Vercetti and Ronnie: I heard "No Direction Home" and "Sin City" were ineligible for the Oscars. The former never made a theatrical run, and the latter is full of controversy because Rodriguez dropped out of the Guild.
Here's my take: Best Picture 'Brokeback', 'Munich', and 'Goodnight' are not surprising. Even though it was talked about a lot, I'm still surprised "Crash" made it in. And I'm so glad "Capote" made it in over "Walk the Line". The former is a great example of the possibilites of a biopic, and the latter is so by-the-numbers it's laughable. Speaking of by-the-numbers, those of you who are calling "Crash" overrated need to see "Brokeback Mountain" if you want a lesson in an average film being swooped away by the public hoopla. See the gay cowboy movie, then come talk to me about "Crash" being overrated.
Best Director Miller is the only surprise here. And for his feature film debut, no doubt. Isn't this the first time in awhile where all the Best Director nominees match the Best Picture nominees?
Best Actor Gladly surprised that Howard made it in.
Best Actress Knightly? I thought she was out. Good for her.
Best Supporting Actor I'm thrilled that Hurt made it in. The film deserved more nominations, but at least Hurt got the proper recognition.
Best Supporting Actress No surprises.
Best Orignal Screenplay Glad Woody got some sort of recognition. Same for "The Squid and the Whale" and "Syriana".
Best Adapted Screenplay Glad "A History of Violence" got recognized.
Now, my personal picks for the top awards: BEST PICTURE: Capote BEST DIRECTOR: Steven Spielberg for "Munich" BEST ACTOR: Philip Seymour Hoffman for "Capote" BEST ACTRESS: Reese Witherspoon for "Walk the Line". BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: George Clooney for "Syriana" BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Catherine Keener for "Capote" BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY: "The Squid and the Whale" BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY: "A History of Violence"
Now, my predictions for the top awards: BEST PICTURE: Brokeback Mountain BEST DIRECTOR: Ang Lee for "Brokeback Mountain" BEST ACTOR: Philip Seymour Hoffman for "Capote" BEST ACTRESS: Reese Witherspoon for "Walk the Line" BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: George Clooney for "Syriana" BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Rachel Weisz for "The Constant Gardener" BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY: "Crash" BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY: "The Constant Gardener"
How am I not myself?

The problem is not in the subject matter or central relationship, but in the schematic way the narrative treats it. [/b]

Originally posted by Don Zadjali: Russell Crowe really deserves a Nomination for his leading role in The Cinderella Man... I disagree. In fact that was one of the most overrated films of the year. Ron Howard keeps coming out with the most formulaic dramas. Some boxing scenes were good and Crowe was good, but not that good. Crowe was great in The Insider (his best performance) and Gladiator, but his performances since then have only been good at best, IMO.
