I'll never forget one day about 10 years ago...driving to work on a sunny Spring morning. I was just a few blocks from my building and traffic was at a complete halt, beginning just 2 cars in front of me. I was close enough to see that a family of C. geese...I'd say about 10 of them, were just crossing the street, all in a perfectly formed line, taking all the time in the world! And no self respecting driver was about to mow them down in order to make it to work on time. Still amazes me all these years later how those creatures just stopped everything...however it was kind've a cute thing to watch!!
From what I understand, it is actually law (at least in NYS) to yield the right of way to geese who cross the road. We had to wait about 5 minutes for a gaggle of them to move from a pond near our agri-center to the wooded marsh across the street. But I don't think it is a big deal, considering they are smarter than people - they actually tend to look both ways when crossing the street!
As for deer, I have a feeling that if people would stop developing real estate so close to where they live and have been living for so many years...they wouldn't be posing a problem. Feeding of animals like deer or bears is an extremely bad thing...as it gets them used to humans and causes them to come back for more, as opposed to surviving in the wild. That 'deer lady' in NY had to be disciplined in some way.
The problem though is that they are continuing to develop in lands where it used to be wholly wooded, and the deer have no place to go. While I concur with feeding the animals (being one in a long family line of fond visitors of Allegany State Park) is not a good thing, I don't think she deserved to be jailed, at least relative to other things going on in the city (school riots, gang violence, et al).
