Finally the Nebraska legislature passed the Right to carry law. It now goes to the governors desk and he is expected to sign it into law.

Once this becomes official I will certainly be applying for my concealed carry permit.

It's about time Nebraska finally joined the numorous other states that have this important safety tool.

I agree.

Let's have everyone in the country carrying concealed weapons, so the next time I'm driving and some guy cuts me off I can shoot him instead of just giving him the finger.

Seriously...I have no objections to people carrying guns if they feel that they need the protection, but in New York (if I'm not mistaken) you have to demonstarte a "need" before being licensed - like people who routinely carry large sums of money or jewelry as part of their business or job.

My problem is, how do you separate the responsible people from the imbeciles who actually would shoot someone in a traffic dispute?

And how can you be sure that someone who normally is a responsible person won't suddenly go off the deep end and use a gun in a situation that is unwarranted simply because they have one?

You don't and you can't. Not for absolutely, positively sure, anyway.

That's why people have to apply, and probably pass a preliminary background check.

Still, there are no guarantees in life, and there are still black markets galore where those who can't carry legally will still get what they want.

Overall, it's still a good law. Congratulations, Iceman!!

Do you realize how incredibly difficult it is to get a pistol permit? It is extremely selective, and they can refuse you for just about any reason.

The people we have to worry about are the drug dealers and thugs who don't even bother to conceal, but are content to use automatic weapons and bring violence into our neighborhoods, regardless of any laws.

Whatever. Personally, I think that if you live in a rough neighbourhood and/or you deal with undesirables on a daily basis and you constantly fear for your life, then yes you should be able to carry some sort of lethal weapon to defend yourself against the aforementioned undesirables. I don't know the statistics and what not, but I don't think that most American gun owners fall into this category. No matter, the right to own firearms and ammunition is enshrined in The Bill Of Rights in The American Constitution and as everybody knows this is the highest law in the land. At the same time, a woman has the right to an abortion and if a person can own a gun, a woman can have an abortion. The reason? The same reason we can smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol and gamble (in a regulated venue). They're LEGAL.

Regardless of whether someone has no right to possess any sort of weapon whatsoever or whether they can arm themselves to the teeth there will always be criminals and there will always be policemen. The law is the law right?

Iceman, no offense to you personally but how is this "Good news!!!" exactly? Does the right to carry a concealed gun enrich your life in any meaningful way? Do you feel safer now? Do you feel that the gun completes you or that you are that much more secure than the next guy because of the pistol? Again, no offense, maybe it's just me, but I can't see how owning a firearm would increase the pleasure of one's life and increase his contributions to humanity.

Well, it certainly is a victory against the anti-gun left in this country, who largely would be perfectly content to see the 2nd Amendment banished, leaving honest Americans defenseless, while drug runners shoot up neighborhoods with "illegal" weapons.

It is good news because the lawmakers of Nebraska finally decided to trust the law abiding citizens enough. And have finally decided to even the playing field(for lack of better words)Don Jasani I don't need a firearm to enrich my life as you say(I have money for that ) But it will make me feel a lot safer going through certain areas. Like Rest stops on the interstate.

The point is the criminals will always have a gun and will most likely have it with them. While the law abiding citizens just had to put up with it, and hope they didn't get shot or killed.

Police can't be everywhere at the same time, this just enables the law abiding citizens to defend themselves, which is the right of every single individual.

Now the would be criminals will probably stop & think before they decide to attack someone. Cause they'll have no way of knowing if the potential victim is armed or not.

This law has stopped all kinds of violent crimes like Rape, Car-jackings, muggings, assaults(in every state that has this law)the above crimes can & has often lead to murder.

Don't get me wrong....I have nothing against honest, mentally fit Americans having the right to keep and bear arms (uh-oh...this isn't yet another issue about which I disagree with the left, is it?), but whether or not the Bill of Rights "guarantees" this is a matter of opinion.

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

Some would argue that this right extends only to members of a state militia.

True in New York State, but are the regulations the same in, say, Texas?

I stand by what I said. If you face mortal danger on a day to day basis and have to deal with riff raff, scum of the Earth type people because of your job, or your neighbourhood or whatever, then yes, you should be able to defend yourself. I feel that my choice of the abortion analogy was apt however, because as with abortion the gun problem in America is getting way out of hand. A woman having an abortion because she was raped, or she sees absolutely no possible way the kid could be raised by her or the father, or the father skipped out, or, at the end of the day if she just doesn't want the kid, then it is her right under American (and Canadian) law to have an abortion. However, this doesn't mean that a woman who sleeps around and has an abortion about once every year or once every two years or three years or whatever should be encouraged to do so just because it is her right. Responsibility for one's actions is what is at issue here, I believe. As with sexual intercourse, those who own and carry guns whether they be concealed or in the open have to take responsibility for their actions and cannot brandish their weapon of choice to passersby. However, when their life is threated by some dope fiend I don't think too many people would be terribly disappointed if someone took him down.

Oh, the soft, warm radiance of democray; Nebraska's legislature in use.

Now if only they'll legalize curb-stomping and lynching... Well, then I think I could just live out of my pickup truck with nothing but my .45, country-music records, and NASCAR commemorative plates... Oh, I can see the glory, la la la la la...

I personally don't have a problem with allowing guns to be carried. In fact, I'll probably purchase one in the future, especially considering the shithole I live in.

I think it's stupid enough knives are illegal to carry, at least in my state.

We are talking about Nebraska here, folks... I thought they already all had guns at the O-K Corral. What next, Wyoming allowing the right to bear 1000 acres of land?

Sorry, but I'm from Jersey... and worked in New York... you don't need guns in Nebraska any more than NY/NJ residents need them, and we don't at all. :p

But, then again, all I hear about is total lack of crime in areas where everyone can carry... I mean close to zero! So, I'm all for it...! I'd love to have one, myself. Then again, had I had one in my youth, I'd've committed murder a dozen times. Luckily, I've grown up... But still, if it decreases crime, I'm all for it.

I studied Italian for 2 semesters. Not once was a "C" pronounced as a "G", and never was a trailing "I" ignored! And I'm from Jersey! tongue lol

Good grief talk about jumping to conclusions and giving everyone a bad mindset. Not everyone will rush out and apply for a concealed carry permit.

Before anyone in Nebraska can even apply for a permit, they'll have to go through a training course(hell that'll probably weed out quite a bit right there) then if you succeed at that, you'll have to submit 2 sets of fingerprints and under go a very thorough criminal history check.

But what if someone has been harvesting up all this rage--and maybe a twist of insanity--for so long, and then finally, one day some old bloke goes off the deep end? Ever watch Rambo played backwards in cut-time, while dubbed to Darkside of the Moon? I bet it'd be something like that, only ten times more intense, and ten times more amusing.

My two homes are in states at the polar extremes of gun laws:
New Jersey is a "tough" gun state. You have to apply for a permit for each handgun you want to buy, wait weeks for an exhaustive background check, get your police chief to sign--and concealed carry is permitted only for law enforcement (public and private) and those with an overriding need (i.e., carrying large sums of cash).
Arizona is among the easiest states. AZ has no gun laws over and above the Federal requirements. You can buy a handgun in 10 or 15 minutes with a valid AZ ID--the dealer simply has you fill out a Federal form and calls the FBI background check number. Concealed carry is permitted if you complete an approved eight-hour course and are fingerprinted. The course, I'm told, emphasizes safety and law (apparently you can't just whip out your concealed weapon in any situation--there are strictures).

Nothing against New Jersey but isn't Arizona a lot safer than Jersey? I mean Jersey is home to what, Jersey City, Newark, Paterson, and Trenton right? Not exactly Kansas. Arizona is home to Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe and Tucson not exactly Compton, Harlem or South Chicago.

I always thought guns were for sissies. If you wanna defend your family, be a man about it. Use your fists.

Sperling's Best Places uses FBI data that show that both Phoenix and Tucson are on a par with Jersey City for violent and property crime rates, and are much higher than Newark. I can't draw a definitive conclusion from those data. Arizona is now the fastest growing state in the nation, so you might infer that population growth (and hence criminal activity) is outstripping police resources. Or, if growth were stable and police presence were appropriate to population, perhaps crime rates would be reduced, as they have been in Newark. But I can't say that for sure. The nightly TV newscasts in AZ always lead with violent crimes--but they do in NJ and NYC, too.
