They wanted to go back to when no one was alive. Now, I don't know if they meant no HUMANS were alive.. or absolutely NOTHING was alive (like Dinosaurs, etc.) The world would be incredibly boring if nothing existed.

Me? I'd like to go back to the 30's, so that I could be around when most of my favorite actors/actresses were big.. like Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney, Edward G. Robinson, Lauren Bacall, James Stewart.. it would have been neat to meet them, or at least go see some of their movies in the theater. I think so anyway.

I'd also like to go back to various points in time to see historical events take place.. like the Civil War.. the Revolutionary War.. Caesar's time.. Pyramids being built.. that sort of thing.

D.A., I'm just curious as to your reasons why you'd want to go back to the sixties. I suppose because that's my era, and am just wondering (and I'm assuming you weren't even born then, but correct me if I'm wrong), why you choose the 60's.

60's, 70's, that era pretty much. I want to be around for the era that really shaped America as it is today. I always felt like I was born in the wrong era. Many different factors go into it, I guess.

I see! I know every generation has their memories,(I'm referring to not necessarily personal memories, but more of things happening in the world, changes, events etc.) and it's always hard to put into words the "feel" of the era to someone who didn't live them.

Part of me looks back with fond memories that I was a part of a generation who took hold of ideas, and tried to change things, and then part of me thinks, "How the hell did I survive the 60's."

I'd travel back to April, 1912...as a passenger aboard the RMS Titanic.

Of course, I'd make it a point to be one of the survivors...

Hey Apple, speaking of the Titanic, I saw a news banner earlier on CNN that the last living "American" survivor died, but had to go away. Did you hear that? And also, Since they put "American" in there, I assume there are still survivors in other countries.

Hi, TIS...I hadn't seen the CNN story, but being a fanatic of all things 'Titanic'...looked up the link after reading your post. According to the story there are two more survivors, one of whom, Milvina Dean ... I've seen in several television interviews.

Note: the lifeboat pictured in the article below is a 'collapsible'.

My seven year old has shown an interest as of late in The Titanic. He brought home a few books from school in the last couple of weeks. I let him watch the movie a little but it spooked him a bit.

How come noboby thought of shuttling people back to the ice burg in the lifeboats and wait for rescue.

I saw today that the last living person who was old enough to remember anything from it died at the age of 98.

I would suspect that the iceberg wasn't something people could simply sit or stand upon while awaiting rescue in the middle of the ocean.

If you haven't already, have your 7yr old see 'A Night To Remember' ... it's far more historically accurate than the schmaltzy Cameron movie. (except it doesn't depict the ship breaking in half since that wasn't confirmed in 1958)

That's the same person TIS is referring to in her post. As the story states, she was 5 years old at the time, whereas the two remaining survivors were infants.

How was it confirmed so long after. Didn't I witness accounts adress the ship breaking in two.

I am only asking because it sounds like you know your ship when it comes to the Titanic

I've read just about every book available about the Titanic.

Must've been about ten of them...some really interesting stuff.

The film A Night To Remember, based on Walter Lord's book of the same name, is in black and white and done almost documentary-style, and, as Apple says, much more historically accurate and focused on the story of the sinking itself rather than a bogus romantic tale.

Daigo Mick Friend:
Yes, there were documented accounts of survivors (Corinne Andrews/Jack Thayer) who said they saw the ship break in two...also Eva Hart, who was about 7 at the time and lost her father to the sinking.

(I remember an interview of Eva's, when she was well into her 80's...closing her eyes and saying she could see it in her mind as if it were happening right then...amazing!)

Apparently though, these accounts were unable to be taken as fact until Dr. Ballard found the ship in the 1980's.

So I guess that's why it's not shown breaking in two in any of the numerous pre-Cameron films.

plawrence:
For the past few weeks I've been re-reading 'A Night To Remember', and at the same time 'Titanic - End of A Dream' which depicts not only the sinking itself but the aftermath and the hearings that were conducted both in the U.S. and England.

I tend to revisit this stuff every few years...and try to see A Night To Remember every time it's shown on tv. Just like The Godfather!

Gotta get the dvd one of these days!!!
