When it's stated he entrusted the children's 'education' to Kay...I always took that to mean their college educations.

Doesn't necessarily mean he allowed her to raise them. Even with the completely unrealistic premise that they eventually reconciled, that would probably not have happened for years, probably not until the children were well into their teens.
